LAKES ON ELDRIDGE 

DOLPHINS 19 TH SEASON 

The Lakes on Eldridge Dolphins Swim Team will begin their 19 th 

season in 2018! We are excited to welcome back our head coach, 

Amanda Chow and assistant coach, Blair Thoman. Sian Thompson 

will be helping out with Monday practices. We would also like to 

welcome Jack Pittenger as our new junior assistant coach. 

The 2018 practices will be held at the Lakes on Eldridge pool on Monday, 

the Lakes on Eldridge North pool on Tuesday and Wednesday 

and at Villages of Lakepointe on Thursday and Friday.

VLP POOL RULES 

The VLP pool is open Tuesdays-Sundays, 5 AM-10 PM year round for 

your enjoyment. It is CLOSED on Monday for chemical applications. 

Please consider the following pool rules, while using the Pool: 

• Pool parties are not allowed at the pool. 

• Private swim lessons are not allowed at the community 

pool due to vendor and insurance compliance. 

• Keep the pool area and bathrooms clean. 

• The life rings are not to be used as toys. In case of any eventuality 

at the pool, they are critical for safety and rescue operation. 

• If brought down to the pool deck, please return the patio chairs 

to the covered patio. 

• In addition, to these, a complete list of rules is posted at the pool. 

The security camera system has been upgraded for improved vision 

and monitoring.

New pool cards have been issued to all residents who had pool cards 

earlier. If you did not exchange your old card for a new one or if you

Mother’s Day...May 13, 2018 

Mother’s Day History and Fun Facts 

Did you know that more phone calls are made on 

Mother’s Day than on any other day of the year? 

In fact, phone traffic has been known to spike by 

nearly 40% on this holiday honoring motherhood. 

It’s a traditional holiday that is observed 

throughout the world in different ways. In the 

U.S., mothers are most typically presented with 

flowers, cards and other gifts. (Though in 2016, 

about 55% of consumers took Mom out.) But 

since this is common knowledge, we wanted to 

go one step further and learn why Mother’s Day 

exists at all. Here’s what we learned. 

The History of Mother’s Day in America 

The American version of Mother’s Day was first 

celebrated in 1908. It became an official holiday 

just 6 years later in 1914. Anna Jarvis is credited 

with creating the U.S. holiday and leading the 

charge to have it officially added to the national 

calendar. She first conceived of the idea after the 

death of her mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis, in 1905. 

The story goes like this: 

• With financial backing from John Wanamaker 

- owner of the famous department store chain 

- she organized the first-ever celebration at a 

Methodist Church in Grafton, WV in May 1908. She 

wanted to recognize the sacrifices that mothers 

make for their children. 

• On that same day, thousands also attended a 

Mother’s Day event at a Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia. 

• Building on the success of that first Mother’s Day 

event, Jarvis began a 6-year campaign to have it 

added to the national calendar. She argued that 

American holidays were biased towards male 

achievements. 

• By 1912 Mother’s Day had been widely adopted 

at the state and local levels. 

• In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a 

measure officially establishing the 2 nd Sunday 

in May as Mother’s Day. 

• Jarvis’ vision for Mother’s Day was a day of personal 

celebration. To her, the day involved wearing 

a white carnation in honor of mothers and visiting 

one’s mother or attending a church service. 

• Florists, greeting card companies and other 

retailers had other plans though and by 1920 

Jarvis was fully disillusioned by what the holiday 

had become, going so far as to openly campaign 

against all Mother’s Day profiteers. She went on 

to file lawsuits against groups using the term 

“Mother’s Day” and spent most of her personal 

wealth in legal fees. 

• After pushing for 6 years to make the day official, 

Jarvis eventually disowned the holiday 

and actively lobbied to have it removed from 

the American calendar. This effort of course was 

unsuccessful 

Early Mother’s Day Incarnations 

While Anna Jarvis is credited with the official 

creation of the holiday, her mother - Anna Reeves 

Jarvis - is known for having founded “Mother’s 

Day Work Clubs” back in the 1860’s. The goal of 

these clubs was to teach local women how to 

properly care for their children…a tradition that 

is still in existence today with local Moms groups! 

Another similar effort aimed at united and celebrating 

mothers included Julia Ward Howe’s 

“Mother’s Day Proclamation,” a call to action 

for mothers to unite in promoting world peace. 

Howe later campaigned for a Mother’s Peace Day 

to be recognized every June 2 nd . However, none 

of these or other efforts in the 1800’s ever caught 

on beyond the local level. 

Traditional Mother’s Day Celebrations 

The primary means of celebrating moms on 

Mother’s Day in the U.S. continues to be with 

flowers and other gifts. In fact, Anna Jarvis would 

be supremely disappointed to learn that it has 

become one of the biggest holidays for consumer 

spending. 

However, the holiday has also been used to 

advance feminist causes. For example, in the 

1970’s women’s groups were known to use the 

attention generated by the holiday to create 

awareness for the need for equal rights and 

access to childcare. 

In many other parts of the world, the timing of 

Mother’s Day aligns more closely with the historical 

observance of “Mothering Sunday.” Largely a 

European tradition, Mothering Sunday fell on the 

fourth Sunday in Lent and was originally seen as a 

time when the faithful would return home to the 

church. Over time, the observance of Mothering 

Sunday faded and eventually merged with the 

secular traditions associated with the American 

Mother’s Day. 

Mother’s Day Fun Facts 

• About 25% of all flowers purchased throughout 

the year are for Mother’s Day 

• Carnations are often associated with Mother’s 

Day - they are said to be made from the tears’ of 

Jesus’ mother Mary when she wept at his feet. 

• Pink and red carnations mean that a person’s 

mother is living, while white carnations are symbolic 

of mothers who have passed away. 

• Approximately $21 billion is spent on Mother’s 

Day gifts and celebrations. 

• In what was formerly Yugoslavia, children 

would tie up their mothers on Mother’s Day. 

The only way she could get free was to pay them 

with treats. 

• In Greek mythology, the maternal goddess Rhea 

was honored during the spring festivals. 

No matter how you observe this holiday, there is 

no doubt that our mothers have a great influence 

on our lives - not just on Mother’s Day but every 

day of the year.

May 12 th - The Houston Crawfish, Crab & 

Grill Festival is a family event that celebrates

create spectacular sandcastles with tips 

from the pros. Visitors to Stewart Beach can participate 

in “Sandcastle Days” events to receive 

free sandcastle building lessons from a professional 

sandcastle builder. The events will take 

place each Saturday this summer from June 

2nd thru August 18th. Each event will begin with 

an instructor building a sandcastle from 8-11 AM 

followed by lessons at 11 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM. 

Equipment will be provided on a limited basis 

and participants are encouraged to bring their 

own sand buckets and shovels. Registration is 

not required. The lessons will take place on the 

sand near the Stewart Beach Pavilion. Stewart 

Beach is located at 201 Seawall Blvd. It is home 

to helicopter tours, a pavilion, volleyball courts, 

a children’s playground, restrooms, showers, 

chair and umbrella rentals and concessions.

Festival. The third annual Galveston Cajun 

Festival, which is set for Father’s Day weekend,

June 23rd - Houston LGBT Pride Celebration. 

Hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected 

to attend the 2018 Houston LGBT Pride Celebration® 

on June 23rd! Last year, one of the oldest 

and largest pride events in the South moved to 

Downtown Houston with the theme Heroes. This 

year promises to be another mega event! The day 

of festivities kicks off with the Pride Festival from 

12 PM to 7 PM at Hermann Square in front of City

July 4 th - Freedom Over Texas. Celebrating more 

than 30 years of July 4 th music, fireworks and

July 4 th - City of Galveston Independence Day 

Parade and Fireworks. Nothing says “summer 

on Galveston Island” better than the 4 th of 

July! Don’t miss this wonderful evening with 

a glittering parade followed by a dazzling 

fireworks display over the Gulf! Coming up 

the evening of July 4 th , Galveston Island will 

celebrate its annual Independence Day with 

a parade featuring a procession of floats, 

decorated military vehicles and performers. The 

parade will kick off at 7:30 PM with a procession 

on Seawall Boulevard starting at 59 th Street 

and ending at 22 nd Street. After the parade, the 

island will host a 20-minute fireworks show over 

the Gulf of Mexico at 9:15 PM near 37 th Street

MEMORIAL DAY 

Monday May 28, 2018 

Memorial Day, as a formal holiday, is an 

American holiday. It is celebrated to remember 

military service members who have died 

in the line of duty. Memorial Day was originally 

called Decoration Day, as the holiday 

was centered on decorating the graves of 

those who had fallen in the Civil War. 

HISTORY 

There is much debate as to the location 

where Memorial Day originated from. Sometime 

during the late years of the Civil War 

(1861-1865), groups began decorating the 

graves of their loved ones who had died in 

battle. Depending on the source, there are 

perhaps over a dozen locations that claim to 

be the town where the practice began being 

observed - the birthplace of Memorial Day. 

Some of these towns include Columbus, 

Mississippi; Macon, Georgia; Richmond, 

Virginia; Boalsburg, Pennsylvania and Carbondale, 

Illinois. 

There is evidence that the tradition could 

have started in towns in either the North 

or the South. VA.gov states that on April 25, 

1866, in Columbus, Mississippi, a local group 

of women went to decorate the graves of 

Confederate soldiers. They noticed barren 

graves of Union soldiers and decided to 

place flowers there in remembrance. Another 

site, usmemorialday.org, states that a 

hymn published in 1867 called “Kneel 

Where Our Loved Ones are Sleeping” carried 

a dedication “To the Ladies of the South 

who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate 

Dead.” Wikipedia says that by 1865 

the practice was already widespread in the 

North. It is likely that the tradition began in 

many locations independently, with many 

variations on the same idea. Over time, as 

word spread, these traditions could have 

expanded from town to town. 

In 1866, in a town in New York called Waterloo, 

a drugstore owner named Henry Welles 

suggested that the town shops close on May 

5 th to commemorate the soldiers buried at 

Waterloo Cemetery who had died during 

the Civil War. Two years later in Waterloo, 

on May 5, 1868, General John Logan issued 

a declaration that Decoration Day should be 

observed nationwide. The declaration said 

that May 30 th would be designated as a day 

to decorate the graves of “comrades who 

died in defense of their country.” According 

to History.com, President James Garfield 

gave a speech at Arlington National Cemetery 

on that day. In 1966, President Lyndon 

Johnson and the Congress of the United 

States stated that Waterloo was the official 

birthplace of Memorial Day and the official 

date of origin was May 30, 1868. 

In 1882, the name of the holiday was 

changed from Decoration Day to Memorial 

Day. After World War I, the holiday was 

expanded to remember soldiers from all 

American Wars. In 1971, Richard Nixon made 

Memorial Day a national holiday that was to 

be celebrated on the last Monday in May. 

MEMORIAL DAY TODAY 

Today Memorial Day is celebrated across 

the United States. Regardless of where it 

originated, it is an important holiday that remembers 

those that died for the country and 

serves to remind people of the costly price of 

war. There are many formal ceremonies that 

take place in observance. Most of these are 

held in local communities and can be found 

by contacting a local Veterans of Foreign 

Wars office or local city government agency. 

A few traditional events are listed below. 

Laying of the wreath at Arlington Cemetery - 

Often, the President of the United States will 

lay a wreath at Arlington Cemetery on the 

annual observance of Memorial Day. This 

will usually be accompanied by a speech. 

Remembrance and Moments of Silence - 

People nationwide participate in parades 

and still partake in decorating graves with 

wreaths or flowers. Many people will pause 

for moments of silence in memoriam.

Memorial Day is the unofficial kickoff to summer! One of the most 

popular events on Memorial Day is none other than grilling and barbequing. 

Here are some fun facts about grilling on this May holiday: 

• Hamburgers are the most popular food to grill at 87%, 

followed by steak 83%, chicken 78% and hot dogs 76%. 

• The 4 th of July is the largest barbeque holiday, followed 

by Memorial Day and Labor Day. 

• American presidents have openly expressed their love for 

grilling by hosting barbeques dating all the way back to 

Thomas Jefferson. 

MEMORIAL DAY “GRILLING” FACTS 

• The most commonly grilled side dish is corn, followed 

by other vegetables and potatoes. 

• Hickory barbeque sauce is favored, then mesquite, honey 

and tomato based. 

• In homemade barbeque sauces, garlic is almost always found 

in the recipe, as is brown sugar. 

• After aluminum foil, the preferred barbeque tools are 

long handed tongs, clean brushes and spatulas.

NATURE PROGRAMS FOR PRESCHOOL-AGED CHILDREN 

SATURDAYS IN NATURE 

This program is held on the fourth Saturday of each month at the Edith L. Moore Nature 

Sanctuary, held between 1 and 4 PM. A guided nature walk will begin at 2 PM. No reservations 

required. Donations are encouraged. This is a “whole family” program; parents or 

other adult guardians should participate with their children. Park in the Memorial Drive 

United Methodist Church parking lot at 12955 Memorial Drive, enter the nature sanctuary 

through the marked gate and proceed on the path to the log cabin. Upcoming programs

THE TITMOUSE CLUB 

The Titmouse Club is a nature program for children ages 2 ½ to 5 sponsored by the Houston

to 11 AM, from mid-September until mid-May at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary, 440 

Wilchester Boulevard. Each week features a different nature theme and may include nature

Including Kids, a non-profit organization that works with children and 

young adults with autism and other developmental delays, celebrates 

their 15-year anniversary in their new 2.5-acre campus during April, 

designated Autism Awareness Month. 

On April 21, 2003, Including Kids, INC. opened with the mission of providing 

educational and therapeutic instruction using evidence-based 

analysis for children with autism and related developmental delays,

patients receiving care in the Texas Medical Center, by presenting a 

check to the organization for $25,000 on Wednesday, March 21, 2018. 

The Order’s primary purpose is charitable work related to medical 

humanitarian care. The mission of the Grand Priory of America’s 

Charitable and Hospitaller work is to support The Order’s two flagship 

programs: Organ/Tissue donation awareness and Hansen’s disease 

(leprosy). 

The Order has a strong commitment to the field of Hansen’s disease 

and all aspects of organ and tissue donation including awareness and 

pre and post-transplant care. To continue supporting its programs, The 

Order’s National Conference will be held in Houston on Thursday-Saturday,

It was a wet and chilly day, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of runners and walkers at the 

2018 Running for Hearts 5K Family Fun Run and Walk on Saturday, April 7 th at Windwood 

Presbyterian Church! The community came together to support local trauma survivors 

including those affected by human trafficking, abuse, crime, war and natural disasters 

like Hurricane Harvey. 

Runners and walkers of all ages warmed up with the coaches of Iron Tribe Fitness and local 

DJ KLS Entertainment before a timed, trail style 5K and 1-mile family walk. Kids enjoyed 

activities like face painting, fire truck tours, egg relays, photos with the Chick-fil-A cow and 

a giant inflatable soccer goal from Sport Quest. 

Over fifty volunteers including teens from local Cy Fair ISD and Klein ISD helped with set 

up, activities, cheering and planning the event. Over three dozen local businesses joined 

in the fun this year, many offering prizes and discounts for race attendees.

year during its regularly scheduled meeting March 5 th , with students 

transfer forms made available online and at the campuses beginning 

April 2 nd .

WOMEN’S SOUL CARE EVENT 

The Women’s Ministry Team will be hosting 

a “Women’s Soul Care Event” on May 10 th 

at 7 PM in the Family Life Center. The guest 

speaker for the event will be Dr. Janice Gilbert. 

Dr. Gilbert is the author of “Spiritual Stolen 

Identity” and pastors a mid-size congregation 

in the Beaumont area. She served as an educator 

in the HISD School System and Houston 

Community College System and has served as 

an ordained clergy in the United Methodist 

Church for 20 years. She conducts seminars 

and workshops as well as does individual 

life coaching. She has a passion for helping 

individuals reach their full potential in their 

everyday living based in the Word of God. 

Dr. Gilbert will release her new book this fall 

entitled: “What Does Success Look Like.” 

The “Soul Care Event” includes a meal and a 

nursery is available so attendees are asked to 

please RSVP by calling the Cornerstone Church

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION 

A wonderful Mother’s Day “Celebration” has 

been planned by the Worship Ministry Team 

at for Sunday, May 13 th . At all three worship 

services, we will distribute carnations to every 

woman in attendance. We will also be giving 

an additional gift to three of our special mothers: 

the oldest mom in attendance, the mother 

with the youngest child in nursery/worship 

and the mother with the most children present. 

The theme of the service will be centered 

around Dr. Dave Meadows’ Mother’s Day 

message entitled, “Purpose Driven Parenting” 

based on Deuteronomy 6:4-9. Make plans to 

join us for this special worship opportunity

DIGNITY GOSPEL QUARTET 

The Dignity Gospel Quartet will be performing 

at all three services on Sunday, June 10 th . 

Founded in 2004 in Houston, this Southern 

Gospel Quartet is a nationally recognized and 

regularly performs in the greater Houston and 

Gulf Coast areas. In 2012 they initiated the production 

of The Greater Houston Area Gospel 

Songfest that consists of 5 concerts each year 

that includes other nationally recognized gospel 

music artists. The members of the quartet 

include Wally Shuttlesworth, Russell Allen, 

Josh Flynn and Clint Hebert. There is no cost 

but a love offering will be received. A nursery 

will be available for all three services.

SCHOLA CANTORUM 

Do you want your children to become lifelong 

servants of the Church? Singing in a 

children’s choir is a great way to help that. 

The St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Schola Cantorum 

is currently accepting children Grades 

4-12 for its after-school choir program. The 

choir is responsible for enriching the Mass 

on 10:30 on Sundays and rehearses every 

Wednesday from 3:45-5 PM. Unique in the 

area, the choir focuses on singing music from 

the rich Catholic tradition, including chant 

and polyphony, as well as the finest modern 

church music. Time is devoted to building 

the children’s skills of music reading, vocal 

technique, thinking about the words and the 

structure and meaning of the Mass. Service 

hours are available for older students. For

English Gateway is a program designed to teach conversational 

English. The vision and desire of English Gateway is to assist 

international families in learning and improving English skills to 

help them live and be successful here in the United States. We 

offer 6 different levels and have open registration throughout 

the CFISD school year. Childcare is available for free for preschool 

children as long as they are registered beforehand. 

How much does it cost? There is a one-time fee of $20 for the 

books; classes are free.

GARDENING TIPS FOR MAY 

Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are growing 

fast. Here are some tasks to keep your landscape beautiful and 

productive: 

Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and annuals 

including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, lobularia, sunflowers, 

yellow bells, pride of Barbados, duranta and bat-faced cuphea. 

Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery plants, 

okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, basil, 

peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic chives and Malabar greens. If 

you don’t want to dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting 

here and there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular 

new trend! 

Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight 

sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long 

to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”. 

Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better 

yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to 

deter weeds from getting a start. 

Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to 

promote new blooms. 

Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow 

release organic fertilizer. 

Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent 

light sprinkling. 

Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders! 

Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding 

spots.

Garlic Shrimp Scampi 

You could make this on National Shrimp Day May 10 th ! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 (8 ounce) package angel hair pasta 

1/2 cup butter 

2 cloves garlic, sliced 

1 1/2 pounds shrimp, peeled and deveined 

1/3 cup white wine 

3/4 cup dry bread crumbs 

3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 

DIRECTIONS: 

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add angel hair pasta and return pot to boil. 

Cook until al dente. Drain well. 

In a large saucepan, melt butter, saute garlic until tender, remove garlic and discard. Add 

shrimp and cook until colored pink. Stir in white wine. The bread crumbs are used as 

thickening, so stir in a little at a time until desired thickness is reached. Serve shrimp over 

angel hair pasta, sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. http://allrecipes.com/

INGREDIENTS: 

1 cup sliced fresh peaches 

3/4 cup peeled, cored and sliced apple 

3/4 cup peeled, cored and sliced pear 

1/2 cup blueberries 

1/2 cup pitted and sliced cherries 

1/2 cup pitted and sliced plums 

1 egg 

3/4 cup white sugar 

1/4 cup milk 

1 cup all-purpose flour 

1 teaspoon baking powder 

1/2 teaspoon salt 

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 

2 tablespoons butter, melted 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees 

C). Grease a 2 quart baking dish. Arrange the 

peaches, apple, pear, blueberries, cherries 

and plums in the prepared baking dish. In a 

medium bowl, beat egg, sugar and milk. In 

a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking 

powder and salt; stir into the egg mixture. Stir 

in vanilla and melted butter. Cover the fruit 

with the batter mixture. 

Bake 30 minutes in the preheated oven. 

Cobbler should be bubbly and lightly
