continued from page 13 DEVONSHIRE HOME Th e C O U N T R Y M A N Reunited with mum Later that day I did make it to the river to fish but no salmon. However, I can report that at least one salmon has been caught on the River Mole. That sounds bad but as the number of days that fisherman have been able to fish can be counted on one hand, it’s not disastrous. The swallows, sand martins and house martins were busy overhead and their numbers will greatly increase over the coming weeks. Their arrival has been approximately two weeks later than normal as so much has been delayed this spring. The first swifts should arrive by mid May. In the last article I mention the flooding of Horsey Island on the north side of the Taw estuary since the breach of the sea wall. I have to report that no repair work seems to have occurred since my last visit. When I went down recently the tide was racing in, most of the area was underwater. Rather strange to see a barn submerged by the tide. The real reason to go down to the estuary was the possible sighting of the Osprey recently observed fishing in the river Taw on it’s northerly migration. I missed out on the osprey but had a great sighting of a little owl being mobbed by magpies while it sat on a barn roof, appearing oblivious to them pestering it. A Ringed Plover , several Teal, a female Ruff (known as a Reeve) with a wonky leg and a Dunlin, were about the most exciting birds spotted between hefty showers. I Dog poop bags just left? did notice a real twitcher packing up his telescope and then he and his partner gathered up some of the mountains of plastic rubbish lining the sea wall to take home, A hornet’s nest the size of a football well done those two. Not all visitors are so considerate. It’s rather upsetting to see the numerous full dog poop bags left lying around the dunes. I am sure most left with the good intention of picking them up on the return to the car, however they seem to have been strewn everywhere and many have been left for days. The full bag is worse than the sum of the individual parts, it preserves forever the Partridges eggs to put under her. Usually they go broody in late June when the Partridges have stopped laying and this year it is plenty early enough! Every now and again we do see Greys in this part of North Devon and like many things they were more common thirty years ago, it would be just wonderful to see more around.
