The Veterans Farm-Able Foundation
(featured on Countryfile) is a group
of highly qualified, like-minded,
experienced professionals whose
lives have been affected by a loved
one’s trauma in one way or another.
The number of veterans needing
help for mental health problems
such as PTSD has significantly
increased over the past five years
in the aftermath of the Iraq and
Afghanistan. Trauma can have a
huge impact on the sufferer and the
whole family and friends. Through
their desire to support and help,
Farm-Able have undertaken trials of
social farming, i.e using therapeutic
activities in harmony with ‘mother
nature’, the land and animals, all
associated with the countryside,
as an aid to recovery.
success in helping people with
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and
aspects of Rural Skills, some which
will be certificated. A mentor will
be supporting each small group,
and access to a support worker/
counsellor will be available.
Penny Connorton, chief executive
and founder said: "As a 'townie' who
became a dairy farmer in 1979, I
know the real physical and mental
benefits of living on a farm and with
working with animals. Extensive
research at the University of Essex
on Green Care and Social Farming
has demonstrated that working with
nature and livestock significantly
improves mental well-being, building
self-esteem and confidence."
Small trials have taken place on care farms and have
been found to be of great benefit.
