So if you want to get ahead wear a hat, reckons Ollie Allen In the Crafts and Gardens feature and the BBC marquee, there will be two wedding trees for visitors to write their good wishes; after the Show, the messages will be collected and sent to the Royal couple together with a Devon tree sapling to reflect the wedding day and also the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy project. Hat’s off to Devonshire’s Big Day Out! For Show Secretary Ollie Allen (pictured above) this will be her 22nd County Show and final year at the helm but she said that no two shows were ever the same: “My passion to be part of an event which appeals to every strand of the Devon community only gets stronger year on year. And this year I’m certain we’re going to pull it off yet again - it will be a Show of mixed emotions for me but the star is the Show itself, so if there are plenty of happy people, enjoying themselves, whether competing or visiting, then – ‘job done’ for the last time!” HIP HIP HOORAY! for the indomitable Devon County Show, the first and foremost in the land and daisy-fresh again this year for its 123rd appearance. Farming, the countryside and food remain at the heart of the Show (17-19 May) which is the great curtain-raiser for the livestock and horse showing season in the South West. But there is more than ever to see and do this ‘special’ year. The Royal Wedding takes place on Show Saturday and they’ll be throwing what will probably be the biggest party in the county at the brand new feature dubbed “The Watering Hole”. This is where visitors can sit and savour street food, enjoy local brews from Exeter Brewery and listen to live music, all housed in a huge red and blue marquee. There will be live big screen TV wedding coverage, a mass confetti throw and a ‘head Plan your family visit for the big day itself, Saturday, 19th May and two children can get free admission with every adult ticket. Oh, and did we mention that Devonshire magazine will be taking a stand this year - so why not drop by and meet 2018 some of the people who make these pages happen every time? 17•18•19 MAY Changing childhoods YOUNG PEOPLE from bygone eras are the subject of an exhibition currently on view at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) in the heart of Exeter. It is called “Childhood” and examines the changing face of childhood from the 17th to the 20th Century when all too often children in art appeared as miniature adults. Take, for example, this striking portrait entitled ‘Master Carew’ by the Tiverton born artist Richard Cosway. It is of Henry, later to become Sir Henry Carew, leaning nonchalantly on his sword and clearly ready for the fray. By contrast Victorian works by Kate Greenaway such as The Stick Fire and The Garden Bench place emphasis upon childhood innocence and romanticism. Childhood runs from now until 18th November. Daisy, daisy! ’T IS SUMMER AT LONG LAST and we write in praise of Devon’s ubiquitous, down trodden yet perfectly beautiful daisy, Bellis perennis unchanged since time immemorial and the flower of necessity for making daisy chains. It is also the flower most commonly destroyed by Devon maids with an eye to a would-be suitor (“He loves me, he loves not”) which romantic pastime can be traced back to a Dartmouth-dwelling Chaucer and his Legendes of Goode Women that deals with the daisy as a symbol of fidelity. Stay up late this Midsummer’s Eve and you will see how the ‘Day’s-eye’ (for that is how it got its name) closes its petals at dusk to cover that wonderful sunny centre: and that’s a wrap.
