Capital case study: Live Theatre Newcastle Executive summary Live Theatre was founded in 1973 with the intention of creating plays that were rooted in the north east. Located on the Newcastle and Gateshead quayside, it was one of the first cultural organisations to convert an historic building there. Over the years, the theatre has spread, gradually acquiring and converting adjacent properties. The most recent and most significant capital project was completed in 2008 at a cost of £5.5 million, a mix of newbuild and refurbishment drawing the complex together and creating the ‘fit for purpose’ building which Live Theatre had long been seeking. 1 Contents 2 Executive summary 3 Project background and history 4 The company 5 Vital statistics 6 Rationale for the project In addition to a comfortable and flexible 180-seat auditorium, the building now provides a double height studio/performance space which also houses some of the company’s rapidly developing education and youth theatre activities. It also contains a rehearsal suite, writers’ rooms, a foyer bar and public restaurant as well as an exhibition space which is rented out, thus providing a source of income.
