Longtime Museum Employee 

to Oversee Membership, Donor 

Relations with a Focus on 

Enhancing the Visitor Experience 

Palm Springs Art Museum recently 

announced that 

Michael Hinkle has been appointed 

Director of Philanthropy, 

effective immediately. In 

this newly created position, the 

longtime Museum employee will 

oversee all of the institution’s 

membership efforts and related 

events and programs. 

“I’ve been enamored with the 

Palm Springs Art Museum since 

my first visit with my third-grade 

class,” says Hinkle, a Coachella 

Valley native. “That initial experience 

inspired a lifelong passion 

for the arts, so I’m thrilled to be 

engaging a new generation of 

art-loving philanthropists, who 

grasp the crucial role that the 

Museum plays in this community.” 

From 2015-16, Hinkle was part of 

the team that helped develop the 

Museum’s Strategic Plan: Vision 

20/20. With the plan’s goals 

and strategic initiatives in mind, 

Hinkle looks to put the visitor at 

the center of the museum experience. 

“Helping to create positive 

experiences for our members, 

visitors, and the community, at 

all our Palm Springs Art Museum 

locations, is a key goal and focus 

of my work,” says Hinkle. 

A graduate of Indio High School, 

Hinkle went on to earn a Certificate 

in Fine and Decorative Arts 

Appraisals from New York University, 

and a Bachelor of Science 

degree, Business from University 

of Phoenix. After working 

for private collectors in Los Angeles 

for 14 years, Michael moved 

his family back to the desert. He 

began his career at the Museum 

in 2012 and most recently held 

the title of Managing Director of 

the Museum’s Architecture and 

Design Center. 

“Michael is an incredible asset to 

the Museum and has worn many 

hats over the years, from public 

relations to generating new 

membership,” said Jeb Bonner, 

Palm Springs Art Museum Deputy 

Director and Chief Financial 

Officer. “In this new role, he will 

help ensure a prosperous future 

for the Museum while further 

establishing it as the Coachella 

Valley’s cultural hub.”

Vincent Corrales, aka DJ Galaxy, Rides Again 

On June 3rd – 9th, 2018, Vincent 

Corrales will once again be riding his 

bicycle 545 miles from San Francisco to 

Los Angeles in his continued commitment 

to help end AIDS. 

Vincent’s first ride with AIDS LifeCycle 

took place in 2004. That particular ride 

raised $4,258,000. Since then he’s 

ridden eighteen various rides for AIDS. 

This year will be his thirteenth 

AIDS LifeCycle ride. 

He has done two south 

Florida rides in ‘The Smart 

Ride’ from Miami to Key 

West, and four Los Angeles 

to Palm Springs rides, ‘DJ 

Galaxy’s Ride For A Cure’, 

which he created in 2006 

to raise money for AIDS 

Assistance Program and 

Desert AIDS Project. All 

together since 2014, he has 

raised over $125,000 and 

has peddled over ten thousand 

miles, not including 

training rides. He promises 

to keep riding until AIDS 

ENDS. 

Levvy: What has inspired 

you to get involved with this 

cause? 

Vincent: I owe my 

AIDS-ending commitment 

to a woman who would 

forever change my life. Her 

name was Madelyn Lee. 

She was the founder and 

former owner of The Menagerie 

Bar, in Downtown 

Riverside, California. 

L: You say you spent a 

good part of your early 

teen years on the streets of your hometown 

of Riverside and in Los Angeles? 

V: Yes, times were rough at home and 

my relationship with my family was not 

good. If I wasn’t running away from 

home, I was being kicked out. In addition 

to a rough life at home the streets 

were no better. Being gay in the late 

80’s and early 90’s was very scary. I 

tried to continue going to school even 

while being on the streets, but it proved 

impossible. I would experience severe 

bullying and would get suspended for 

fighting when I was only protecting 

myself. 

I would soon found myself in Los Angeles. 

On the streets cold and hungry, 

I took the desperate route and began 

performing sexual favors in exchange 

for money. I would walk the streets of 

Hollywood and get picked up by mostly 

older men. 

L: Were you scared? 

V: I was very scared at times but quickly 

grew a thick skin. There were times when 

I didn’t want to do certain things but was 

forced to, sometimes being ditched without 

even being paid. I got a lot of black 

eyes and swollen faces for the abuse I 

would encounter on the streets. That did 

not stop me from surviving. I did what I 

had to do to live. 

While on the streets, I met many people 

like myself. Sadly, I lost a lot of those 

friends to AIDS and drug addiction. That 

was approaching the end of the height 

of the AIDS epidemic. There were times 

I just wanted to die. It was like living in 

a horrible nightmare that just wouldn’t 

end. 

L: Any stand-out moments? 

V: Early in 1993, I was 

beaten after a trick 

wouldn’t pay me. I was 

thrown out of a moving car 

in front of the adult movie 

theater on Santa Monica 

boulevard called, TomCats, 

at the time. I could not stop 

crying and contemplated 

suicide. While sitting on a 

bus bench two things got 

my attention. A billboard 

across the street read, 

“What You Don’t Know 

Will Kill You”. It was a 

campaign message for 

getting tested. The other 

thing was a song I could 

hear behind me called, 

“Children Of The Night”, 

by Richard Marx. This was 

a message that inspired 

me to go back to Riverside 

and get the f* out of Los 

Angeles. 

L: So you went back to 

Riverside? 

V: Yes. I continued my life 

back home and on the 

streets. The situation wasn’t 

much better but at least 

I wasn’t getting beat up. 

Sadly, just a week after 

being in Riverside my friend 

wasn’t so lucky. He told me he had full 

blown AIDS and that he didn’t think he 

was going to live much longer. After the 

brief meeting at Arlington Park, I left. 

The following day I learned that he was 

severely beaten in an apparent gay 

bashing. My friend died from his injuries. 

The killers were never caught. 

L: How old were you? 


V: It was the summer of 1993. I was 

seventeen. I used to sneak into The Menagerie, 

a gay bar in Riverside. I had a 

fake ID, but everyone knew he wasn’t 

really seventeen. Menagerie owner, 

Madelyn, pulled me aside and told me 

she knew I was lying about my age. 

She demanded that I wouldn’t drink or 

she would ask me to leave. I happily 

obliged...well, for a while. A few weeks 

later I was caught drinking and Madelyn 

ask me to leave. I got real cocky with 

her and left, but not without arguing. 

A few days later it was reported that I 

was pulling tricks from around the bar. 

Madelyn approached me and allowed 

me back into the bar under one condition: 

that I would have to accompany 

her and a few friends and patrons with 

AIDS, to a viewing of the AIDS quilt. 

And she wanted me to make an appointment 

to talk to a friend of hers. I 

agreed. My life changed forever. 

L: What happened? 

V: Fast forward to 2004. I said Madelyn 

Lee saved my life. And if it wasn’t for 

a loving caring woman like her, I would 

not still be here. She taught me about 


AIDS and directed me to professional 

help so that I could appreciate what 

life has to offer, and what I could offer 

others. I found ‘Parents and Friends of 

Lesbians & Gays’(PFLAG), Project Teen, 

and other agencies. I was terrified to 

get tested. In 1993, I was tested for the 

first time. My results were negative. I 

received a new lease one life. From that 

point forward I spoke to others about 

my experiences and I began my quest 

to help those with AIDS. 

L: And you have currently created a 

team in Palm Springs? 

V: Yes. it is called TEAM END AIDS. We 

will be riding with AIDS LifeCycle on 

June 3rd - 9th 2018. So far as a team, 

we have raised over $33,000. 

L: How may someone support the team? 

V: You can help support our team at 

Chill bar, Wednesday, May 16th 7pm- 

12am. It is a fundraiser that will feature 

over a dozen entertainers. You can also 

donate to the cause online by visiting

stand up for equality, and help those 

who can’t help themselves”.

The 1960’s themed cocktail party that was scheduled 

to begin at 6:00 pm was in full-swing by 6:02 pm, when 

Eddie Kreg Anderson and Jim Mannix’s Among Friends at 

the Movies hosted a screening of the pop culture classic 

VALLEY OF THE DOLLS on March 28th at the beautiful Palm 

Springs Cultural Center.

This Interactive Movie event was completely sold-out, 

with close to 500 movie-lovers attending. To get everyone 

in the mood, Eddie and Jim brought in Jason Thompson 

Photography. Jason did a fabulous job of capturing the 

many attendees who came decked out in their finest ‘60’s 

couture! The outdoor cocktail party featured two bars, a 

merchandise table with T-shirts made just for this event 

that had now-famous lines from the film on them, and 

gorgeous custom 1960’s-themed decorative pillows. The 

T-shirts were designed by Eddie through his Bear Wear 

banner; while the pillows were creatively designed by Jim. 

My husband and partner in The Filmmakers’ Gallery, Paul 

Belsito, and I were approached online by first-time author 

William J. Jankowski - who had written a book with his 

close friend, the legendary actress Patty Duke, called In 

The Presence of Greatness: My Sixty-Year Journey as an 

Actress. 

Ms. Duke passed away in 2016 at just sixty-nine years old, 

leaving behind an indelible show business legacy. Patty 

Duke first gained national attention when she played Helen 

Keller in both the stage and film versions of HE MIRACLE 

WORKER. Her unforgettable, breakout performance 

earned her both a Tony Award and an Academy Award. 

Patty would go on to win two Golden Globe Awards, three 

EMMY Awards (from a whopping eleven nominations), and 

be elected President of the Screen Actors Guild. In her two 

New York Times bestselling memoirs, Call Me Anna and A 

Brilliant Madness, she revealed her struggle with bipolar 

disorder, becoming a champion and advocate to those 

suffering from mental illness.

Paul and I spoke with Bill at length about his close 

friendship with Patty, how the idea of writing the book 

together came up, and the process itself. 

Needless to say, we were fascinated! After we explained 

what The Filmmakers’ Gallery is and does - that we 

produce monthly screenings, events and book signings 

at the Palm Springs Cultural Center - Bill expressed an 

interest in coming out to Palm Springs (He lives with his 

partner Vinny on the East coast). He said that the ideal 

film screening to pair with his debut book signing would be 

VALLEY OF THE DOLLS. BAM! We went to work, contacting 

Among Friends and pitching them the idea that we could 

join forces and make the event even bigger by adding the 

book signing element to the cocktail party. 

All was a GO! Bill and Vinny sold many books that evening. 

We then brought him up on stage before the movie began 

to introduce him to the audience and tell a few of his 

favorite Anna stories (Anna was Patty Duke’s actual name). 

This experience gave the eager audience an extra layer of 

understanding Patty Duke and her career. 

WILLIAM J. JANKOWSKI - Became fascinated with Patty 

Duke at the age of eight, when he would watch her on 

reruns of THE PATTY DUKE SHOW. He began collecting any 

film or television program in which she was featured, and 

ten years later he met Duke and a close friendship began 

that would last eighteen years. Bill has been interviewed 

for such publications as USA Today, and served as a 

consultant on biographical television specials about Duke’s 

work for ABC, A&E, Lifetime and E! in addition, he wrote 

the speech given about Duke when she received her 

star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as well as her final

acid to decalcify the tooth. It is called dental 

plaque and it forms very quick after eating. 

The better hygiene a person has, the less 

they will have decay. It takes both sugar and 

plaque to decay a tooth. The more you brush 

and floss, the more plaque removed and the 

less risk of decay. 

Additionally, elderly patients also tend to have 

more decay. It is more obvious with elderly 

patients who are loosing their dexterity, and 

in general they tend to eat more sweets more 

often, and not brush as often. 

There is also another component that needs 

to be explained here. In the mouth there are 

several types of bacteria. Some are responsible 

for gum disease and some are responsible 

for decay. Some people may have the best 

hygiene and still have gum disease and some 

who have the worst hygiene may not suffer 

from gum disease at all. This is because they 

do not have the bacteria responsible for gum 

disease. Same thing for decay. Some people 

will be more susceptible to decay then others 

even if they eat just a little sugar and have 

decent dental hygiene. That is because they 

have that kind of bacteria in their mouth in a 

higher rate then another person. But that is 

not a reasonable excuse. More brushing 

and plaque control with a topical fluoride 

application daily, preferably with a special 

personal tray made at the dental office will 

help. 

Very rarely a person will suffer from gum 

disease and a high rate of decay. It is 

generally one or the other. If someone has 

a high rate of decay, in general they will 

not suffer from gum disease like bone loss, 

periodontal pockets and tooth mobility. 

It is a proven fact though, that the better 

the dental hygiene you have and the better 

your diet is in terms of limiting sugar intake, 

the healthier your gums and teeth will be. 

So, it is not true that decay affect only 

kids. As long as you have one tooth in your 

mouth you are subject to get decay if you 

leave dental plaque on it and eat sugar! 

The best way to prevent that is to have 

good dental hygiene at home and brushing 

after any sugar intake, and to visit your 

dentist 2 to 3 times a year.

Do you think that dental cavities are 

problems only for children? 

It is a general belief that cavities are for kids 

only. But in fact, cavities affect all ages! 

The reason why cavities are more prevalent 

in children is mainly the fact that they tend 

to eat more sugar and have poor hygiene 

habits. However, when looking at the cause 

of decay, which is basically plaque with the 

presence of sugar, it is easy to understand 

that cavities can happen at any age even if 

your mouth is full of crowns. 

Of course there are some people who have 

teeth that are softer then others and are 

easier to decay but that affects only 1% of 

the population. Basically any diet rich in 

sugar will increase your chance of decay. 

Soft drinks, candies and anything sweet 

will have a potency to create decay in the 

presence of dental plaque. Of course in 

order to create decay there has to be the 

bacteria that will transfer the sugar into

It would be hard to find a band in the 

world that has been as celebrated as 

Earth, Wind & Fire. For nearly 50 

years, their music has become part of 

the tapestry of our lives. With over 100 

million albums sold and an impressive 

nine Grammy Awards, Earth, Wind & 

Fire’s legacy is firmly cemented in pop 

culture history. 

But make no mistake, the band is not 

relying on their past. All over the world 

their concerts continue to thrill sold-out 

audiences. When Earth, Wind & Fire 

takes the stage, it’s more than a show 

-- it’s an event. 

This May, Earth, Wind & Fire will bring 

their show to The Venetian Theatre in Las 

Vegas for six intimate shows that they 

promise will be a dazzling and vibrant 

spectacle of timeless music. 

“The production of our show in Las 

Vegas is not to be missed,” says Verdine 

White, a founding member of Earth, 

Wind & Fire. “We’re going to take the 

audience on magical and inspiring journey. 

We have a lot of energy to share.” 

Since Earth, Wind & Fire formed in 

Chicago in 1969, they have built a hit 

catalog that includes eight number ones. 

Given the wealth of familiar material 

to choose from, it’s not a gamble that 

the audiences in Vegas will be singing 

along all night. From “Let’s Groove” to 

“After the Love is Gone” to “September,” 

Earth, Wind & Fire has consistently 

made music that bridges the gap among 

ages, races and cultures. 

After all of these years, White says he 

never tires of performing the songs that 

have earned a place people’s hearts. 

“I play them as if they’re the first time 

I’ve played them. And I love the music 

and I respect the music,” says White. 

White’s bass guitar is the heartbeat of 

Earth, Wind & Fire. He started playing 

the instrument even before he was a 

teenager. He says he was in his orchestra 

class and saw the bass in the 

corner and it just spoke to him. Together 

they became a match made in musical 

heaven. 

No surprise his older brother, the late 

Maurice White, asked him to join the 

band. With so many musical influences 

that range from Miles Davis to the 

Beatles, Earth, Wind & Fire’s sound has 

always defied categorization. Today 

a whole new generation of artists 

including Beyoncé and Chance the 

Rapper have declared themselves fans 

and have been inspired by the band’s 

artistry. 

“People thank us for just being who we 

are,” White says. “All the music we’ve 

made, the shows, making people feel 

good - those are big moments in everybody’s 

lives. And it’s very meaningful 

to hear those kinds of comments. That’s 

why we do what we do.” 

With so much to give, Earth, Wind & 

Fire shows no signs of stopping. Their 

concerts in Las Vegas will surely be a 

love letter to their fans.
