Downs environment network group
The Labor Environment Action
Network, LEAN, launched
a new sub branch on the Darling
Downs - LEAN Darling Downs
- on Saturday, April 21.
This group is focused on small
towns and businesses across the
rural areas north, west and south
of Toowoomba.
The group supports landowners
who respect sustainable
farming practices and produce
quality food.
We respect landowners who
willingly, at cost to themselves,
protect valuable habitat and biodiversity.
We want to see Labor’s agenda
fairly and honestly reported,
and aim to promote dialogue and
information sharing with speakers
on various aspects of government
policy.
Attendees included LEAN
Queensland volunteers, local
Labor members, farmers, and
members of the public keen to
hear the future priorities of the
group and their intention to engage
local farmers, small businesses
including engineering,
food processing, tourism and rural
representative groups on the
Darling Downs.
The launch was held at
Pechey Homestead, the home of
HIGH COUNTRY
FARMING
John and Liz O’Brien, built in
the 1920s by Pechey ancestors,
Liz’s family, whose history in
the district precedes the founding
of Crows Nest.
Members hope to provide an
interface between rural people
and the Labor Government. All
present enjoyed an informative
and entertaining afternoon.
Future events will be announced
and any interested parties
are welcome to attend.
Wanting to walk
from Highfields to
Toowoomba? Council is
planning for it.
A dedicated walkway
and cycle path between
Highfields and
Toowoomba is likely to
be many years away.
But Toowoomba
Council has thought
about such a cycling and
walking corridor.
It will happen, but not
overnight.
Toowoomba Council
last week opened a cycle
way/walking way linking
South Street and Alderley
Street along the eastern
edge of the City Golf
Club.
It was the missing link
for a cycling and walking
path between the CBD
and the University of
Southern Queensland.
During the opening
ceremony, Infrastructure
Labor Environment Action Network launched at Pechey.
Highfields -Toowoomba walkway possibility
chair Carol Taylor said
the council wanted to
extend such a walking/
cycling corridor north to
Highfields.
But that’s a long term
plan, and Cr Taylor said
cycling and walking were
n a grand vision. She said
cycle way networks added
value to our green space.
The new City Golf
Club cycleway was
opened by the Mayor
and Kym Murphy, head
of Transport and Main
Roads for the Downs and
South West.
The City Golf Club
Cycleway cost $1.13
million and was
jointly funded by the
Department of Transport
and Main Roads and
Government’s Cycle Network
Check on car security
Volunteers from the Crime Prevention Unit in
Toowoomba were making sure cars were secure
in the Highfields Plaza Circle car park last week.
The group were checking that there were no
personal documents or valuables visible and that
doors were locked and windows were closed.
Their goal is to educate people that if you need
to leave valuables in your car, make sure they are
hidden from plain sight as thieves are much more
likely to break into a car with money or valuables
visible. - Jack Waters
section at Goombungee-Haden Show. With him is Wayne Anderson, Kingsthorpe, who assisted with
the judging.
WORKSHOPS
In collaboration with our local communities,
we’re preparing a Green Infrastructure Strategy
as a key environmental policy to support the
planning, development and integration of green
infrastructure across the Toowoomba Region.
Green infrastructure refers to a network of naturally
occurring or built assets with a living component
that deliver important benefits to people and
places in both urban and rural environments.
We’d love to hear your ideas on green
infrastructure issues, opportunities and initiatives
and invite you to attend one of our community
workshops on 19 May 2018.
• Workshop 1 – Clifton, 10am to noon
• Workshop 2 – Millmerran, 10am to noon
• Workshop 3 – Highfields, 3pm to 5pm
• Workshop 4 – Toowoomba, 3pm to 5pm
Each workshop will explore the same topics and
questions so you only need to attend one session.
Workshop spaces are limited and registrations are
essential. To register, visit yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au/greenis
or call Council on 4688 8614. Registrations close
14 May 2018.
Each workshop will explore the same topics and questions
so you only need to attend one session. Refreshments will
be provided.
You can also have your say by completing an online
or hard copy survey. Online surveys are available via
yoursay.tr.qld.gov.au/greenis and hard copy surveys can
be collected from Customer Service Centres.
