GOOMBUNGEE HADEN SHOW PICTORIAL Showgoers Pam and Max Bacon. OAKEY REMEMBERS Tribute to sacrifice in war In November 1918, World War 1 came to a halt at the signing of an Armistice. Ever since, the global community has acknowledged this event on Remembrance Day. This war was one of the deadliest conflicts in the history of the human race. More than 16 million people died, including seven million civilians who succumbed to disease, starvation or exposure. The total number of both civilian and military casualties is estimated at around 37 million people. For Australia, WWI remains the costliest conflict in terms of deaths and casualties. From a population of fewer than five million, 416, 809 men enlisted, of whom more than 60,000 were killed and 156,000 wounded, gassed or taken prisoner. Oakey and District Arts Council members believed that 2018 was an appropriate time to reflect on this significant period in Australia’s history so the concept of Lest We Forget was conceived. The production was envisioned to be a tribute to those who served abroad as well as those who kept the home fires burning in Australia from 1914 to the return of the last of our nurses and servicemen in 1919. It was made possible through the Queensland Anzac Centenary Spirit of Service Grants Program. Arts Council president Joanne Evans said the week in which ANZAC Day fell was chosen to stage the commemorative production because that date is of great significance in the Australian calendar. “We are very grateful to Oakey Historical Museum Society’s support through the staging of their exhibition in the Cultural Centre which complimented our two performances,” Mrs Evans said. The theme flowed through songs from wartime, interpretive choreography by local dancers, reflections from a WWI nurse and members of the 11th Light Horse Regiment, a short anti-conscription dramatisation by local thespians, and contemporary music, reflective Photo supplied of the era, was performed by local school students. The production was directed and narrated by Denise Muller. “It seems more than fortuitous that our cast and crew of one hundred people, aged from 7 to 85 years, were involved in our tribute to mark this centennial milestone.” “Our Arts Council members thank all who committed themselves to the success of this production, and to those who supported it through their attendance,” Mrs Evans said. African choir in Toowoomba We welcome you to experience the wonderful performance of the Watoto Children’s Choir in the return of their Signs and Wonders tour in 2018. Since 1994 the Watoto Children’s Choirs have travelled around the world and toured in Australia since 2003, to share stories of Africa’s vulnerable women and children. Each child in the choir has suffered the loss of either one or both of their parents but is now receiving holistic care as a part of the Watoto family. The children will represent as ambassadors for Watoto, sharing a message of hope and transformation through their personal stories and performing the choir’s hit songs from the Signs and Wonders production. Their concert provides an in- credible opportunity for reaching out to the wider community and to meet children who are less fortunate than our own children here in Australia. The tour also provides a great experience for cultural exchange and we would like to extend our invitation to have you meet these future leaders of Uganda. The Watoto Children’s Choir will perform in Toowoomba on July 1 at Hume Ridge Church of Christ. Their performance will aim to raise awareness and present opportunities to make a difference through sponsorship programs offered or donations to help fund projects in Uganda. Proudly supported by TOOWOOMBA SECOND RANGE CROSSING Changed traffic conditions on the New England Highway at Mount Kynoch The final construction stages for the New England Highway realignment will be carried out from 12 May 2018 and take approximately four weeks to complete (weather and construction conditions permitting). Please allow an additional 10-15 minutes for your travel time while we carry out these works. At the end of these works traffic will be permanently switched on to the new section of the New England Highway which includes travelling over the dual arch bridges above the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing (TSRC). Changed traffic conditions Traffic changes will involve lane closures during peak traffic periods, reduced speed limits and traffic switches. Nexus will not be impacting traffic on Goombungee Road while these works take place on the New England Highway. Emergency access and local road access will be maintained during these works. How to drive near roadworks When approaching the New England Highway roadworks please merge late. It can feel rude driving up the empty lane and merging at the last minute but in reality it helps everyone. Merging late at roadworks can result in: • a 15% increase in the volume of cars moving through the work zone • up to 50% decrease in queue lengths • a safer road environment • more consistent traffic speeds.
