Thelma celebrates her 90th with Hooley Dooley World Wonder Horse
Thelma Muggleton, president of
the Toowoomba Blind Bowlers Club
(Don’t believe it? Neither did I. Just
ask them and they will tell you how
they do it.)
An avid bowler herself, Thelma celebrated
her 90th birthday at Easter in
Hampton.
Now living in Crows Nest and still
managing to run her own life, Thelma
says that her biggest age-related regret
is that, due to eye problems, she is not
able to drive her own car.
However, this birthday did bring
her a new driving experience.
When her son and daughter-in-law
Ross and Lorraine Lisle, of Hampton,
asked her what she would most like
for a celebration treat she chose to
have a carriage ride/drive in a traditionally
historic sulky dating from her
earliest day, complete, of course, with
driver and groom.
And that is where Hooley Dooley
World Wonder Horse joined the party.
Successful ex-trotter, well known
show horse and champion carrot-eater,
Hooley Dooley World Wonder
Horse was also celebrating a birthday,
his 19th. He, like Thelma, loves
a good party.
A meeting was arranged. Instant
rapport. And Thelma drove again, this
time with reins instead of a steering
wheel, accompanied by Hooley Dooley’s
owner, Anji Cain of Cabarlah.
Trotting through Hampton’s pretty
country lanes, they arrived with a
flourish at Ross and Lorraine’s property,
to be greeted with an uproariously
cheering family gathering.
Thelma’s life has produced six children,
23 grandchildren and 10 great
grandchildren and their spouses plus
many, many friends, and the welcome
sounded a bit like the World Cup.
The only two unperturbed people
there were Thelma and Hooley Dooley
Ḟellow coachman and co-driver
Harry Adams, lifetime farmer and
horseman and now member of the
Cobb and Co Historical Museum,
Toowoomba was team member, successfully
directing traffic and crowd
control and also later driving Hooley
Dooley for guest trips around the
Lisle’s beautiful estate before a celebration
feast that went on all day.
Hooley Dooley had his feast too,
Ross had fixed up a most sumptuous
grassy paddock for him to rest and
recuperate while we partied and he
loved it.
I think Thelma did too. What a day,
Thelma made it look as if being 90 is
a piece of cake (and there was plenty
of that too.)
We ate, we toasted, we chatted, we
sang, we laughed, we drove, we remembered
and we marvelled at Thelma.
At 90 it would be something for
her to remember. May she live to remember
many more. - Anji Cain
will be diverted to the new roadway at the end of the month.
Work would then start on the bridges for the next two lanes
of the New England Highway.
She thanked motorists for being so patient with the road
works, and presented video information on the best way to
merge when two lanes of traffic came into one.
• The information showed that in heavy traffic, a 15 per
cent increase in volume of cars and more consistent traffic
speeds can be achieved if cars merge later. But in faster
moving traffic, or lighter traffic, it was better to merge earlier.
