Sacramento Claims Association News Network • May 2018 5 Meza Delivers Message of Oversight of Industry and Cooperation by CDI at April SCA By Bryan Harrison The Sacramento Claims Association was pleased to present Mr. Peter Meza, of the California Department of Insurance, as our special guest speaker for the April 12, 2018 educational luncheon meeting. Mr. Meza, who came up through the industry, with extensive stints as both a claims adjuster and an agent, is now an Associate Insurance Compliance Officer with the CDI. He focused a good part of the first segment of his presentation on the inner workings of the DOI, providing some new good information for all involved, adjusters and vendors, regarding claims, and some of the department’s priorities in oversight of regulations. He explained the importance and necessity of claims personnel setting reserves for their losses. Mr. Meza also spent some time discussing a new diversity initiative program. The CDI’s web site explains that “The Insurance Diversity Initiative (IDI) was established by Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones in 2011 in an effort to focus on diversity issues within California’s $310 billion insurance industry.” Meza showed stats outlining some of the results of surveys they’ve done of registered carriers in the state. “Setting reserves is a big deal for claims adjusters,” he said. Each claim must have established parameters that binds the carrier to the value of their collective losses.
