USED
BOATS
When buying a
used boat, there a
few things to keep
an eye out for.
Written by: Ellen Dunkerton
Cracks: Take a close look at the fiberglass
for any cracks, both above and below the
waterline. Any cracks that are more than
two inches long suggest there are more
problems than the eyes let on.
Damage: Any signs of flexing, cracking,
mould and moisture in fibreglass and
wooden areas such as the hull, transom
and floor, can indicate rot, the breakdown of
fiberglass, delamination of plywood or even
rot in the stringers. If this is the case, it’s be
unwise to continue with the transaction.
Seats: If there are any loose seats, it could
be because the floor is rotten, or it could
simply be that the bolts are stripped. If the
latter is the case, then your marina can
easily fix it.
Mildew: Look for mildew on the seats, boat
top and carpet. Any upholstery and covers
can easily be cleaned or replaced, but
extensive mould inside the seats isn’t good.
Not to mention that mould spreads easily,
so spores on these surfaces may be in the
wooden parts too.
Electronics: Make sure to check to if any
labels on the engine have peeled up or if
any insulation on the wires has melted,
which are signs of the engine overheating.
Belts: Your first service can cover any
damaged belts, but if the alternator or
power-steering belts are thin, worn or
cracks, then it’s a sign of bad care.
Engine: Does the engine start rough or slip,
make excessive noise, vibrate or smoke?
These symptoms can indicate a bigger,
costly problem such as low compression in
the cylinders.
Oil: If the engine oil feels gritty between
your fingers, then the grit is metal filings
which could mean serious engine wear.
If a mechanic confirms this, abandon the
transaction.
