‘La cuisine française’ at
The Bridge Teen Center
SUBMITTED BY TINLEY PARK
HIGH SCHOOL
Tinley Park High School
French 3H and French 4H
students Emmanuel Gapio,
Martin Santillan, Rachel Baiker,
and Morgan Campbell
accompanied their teacher,
Mrs. Selime Baftiri-Ballazhi,
to The Bridge Teen Center
on April 12. The group was
at The Bridge to teach local
middle school and high
school students about the art
of French cooking.
They discussed the origin
of the Crêpes, a popular
dish eaten by many French
people, and explained that
French cooking doesn’t always
have to cost a lot of
money, and often includes
ingredients most have on
hand at home. The students
enjoyed themselves and
made new “amis” (friends),
all while cooking and eating
“la cuisine française.” This
is the third time that TPHS
French students have volunteered
to teach at The Bridge
Teen Center, and they were
thoroughly impressed with
all of the programs that this
local center provides.
On April 25 students from
Bremen, Tinley Park, Hillcrest
and Oak Forest High
Schools volunteered their
time to support the United
Way’s “April Food Day”
at the Tinley Park Convention
Center. Non-perishable
items were delivered to the
Convention Center from
approximately 20 area collection
sites. Along with
participation from their own
schools, the District 228
students helped to unload
and organize the many donations
received.
“While there is no community
service requirement
for District 228 students
to graduate, it is common
knowledge in our school
community that D228 students
have big hearts when
it comes to helping and
supporting their fellow students
and communities.
This United Way 2018 Food
Drive was proof of that and
provided a great opportunity
for our students to share
their passion for helping
others.” said D228 Superintendent
Bill Kendall.
According to a letter received
from United Way,
with nearly 25% of Cook
County’s school age children
having a need for support,
food drives have become
a crucial resource for
many students. Those families
rely on food that comes
from local food pantries
to feed their families. The
United Way’s Food Drive
provides a significant support
for local food pantries
and community support is
essential.
Among the items needed
are: 100% fruit and vegetable
juice, bagged rice
and beans (canned and
dry), canned fruits and
vegetable, cereal, oatmeal,
granola bars, chips, cookies,
crackers, canned meats
and stews, peanut butter,
jelly, infant supplies including
baby food, formula, and
diapers, laundry detergent,
and toiletries including
soap, shampoo, conditioner,
deodorant, toothpaste, and
feminine products. Additional
information may be
found on the United Way
web site at https://uw-mc.
Hilda Walker Drama Club performs ‘Kid Frankenstein’
SUBMITTED BY HILDA WALKER
SCHOOL
The students of Hilda
Walker Drama club proudly
presented, “Kid Frankenstein”
on the weekend of
April 7. A cast created of
about 50 fifth and sixth graders
explored the theater life
through lots of practices
and full-dress rehearsals
from February-April under
the guidance of Mr. Doody
and Mrs. Hodys. Students
memorized lines, built sets,
brought in props, learned
various stage phrases, timing
of entrances, and really impressed
the audience on both
production nights. The drama
club also had many parent
volunteers who helped
with set design, mic switches,
costume malfunctions,
and more. A huge thank you
to all cast members, community
members, and district
members for making drama
cluw a success for our students.
