The cover: A beloved Thunderbird sails the harbor
In 1957, the Douglas Fir Plywood Association mailed a challenge to area boat designers and boatbuilders: Build a plywood
sailboat that could race and cruise, sleep four, be built by reasonably skilled amateurs, be powered by an outboard engine,
and outperform other sailboats. Ben Seaborn, a notable yacht designer of the period, took on the challenge, along with Ed
Hoppen and Eddon Boat Company employees Herb Schuey and Phil Manley. Together, they worked through the details during
the construction of the first. Thunderbirds No. 2 and No. 3 — Pirouette and Windsong — built simultaneously at Eddon Boat
Company can be viewed as the true prototype T-Birds as some details were modified for subsequent boats. Those two boats
defined the building plans that were used by homebuilders. Today, there are more than 1,000 Thunderbirds worldwide with fleets
in Australia and the United States. The original Thunderbird is at the Harbor History Museum. Pirouette was purchased by the
Gig Harbor BoatShop and lovingly restored at the Eddon Boatyard by talented volunteers. It is used for the Community Sailing
Program at the BoatShop. Photograph by Chance Busey. Photo taken at the LeMans Regatta on Nov. 16, 2017.
GET TO KNOW
GIG HARBOR
Known as the most
picturesque harbor in
the Northwest, Gig
Harbor is an easily
accessible, relaxing destination
with lots to see and do.
Gig Harbor offers waterfront
and uptown shopping, fine and
casual dining, and overnight
lodging in small to midsize
Activities, history surround area’s
waterfront as focal point
inns and bed and breakfasts.
Yachting is big here with private
marinas and a public boat
dock. Kayak, paddleboard and
boat rentals are available, as
are harbor boat tours. Top golf
courses including Chambers Bay
and Gold Mountain are a short
drive away, while trails, parks
and charming neighborhoods
invite walking and cycling.
Delightful festivals and inspiring
events add to the mix.
Perhaps Gig Harbor
waterfront’s most distinctive,
and iconic, historic buildings are
its netsheds. As early as 1910,
Gig Harbor’s first netsheds
began appearing along the
waterfront. These simple
structures, many constructed

with rough, hand-hewn fir were used by
local fishermen to store nets and fishing
gear. As the town grew, many netsheds
disappeared. Today, only 17 netsheds
along the western shoreline remain, but
Gig Harbor Bay still boasts the largest
inventory of historic netsheds on the
Puget Sound. These structures are best
viewed from the water. Stop by the
Skansie Visitor & Interpretive Center to
pick up a netshed map or visit Ancich
Waterfront Park to view a rehabilitated
netshed (open mid to late 2018).
Gig Harbor was recipient of the 2017
Great Neighborhoods Award by the
Washington Chapter of the American
Planning Association of Washington. This
award highlights improvements the city
has made in parks such
as the Welcome Plaza
at Skansie Park and
water access at the
Ancich Waterfront
Park, activities
for visitors such
as the Waterfront
Farmers Market,
Waterfront Walking
Tour and the Get
Around Gig Harbor
Trolley. Last year the
City of Gig Harbor Welcome Plaza
won the Project of at Skansie Park
the Year Award from
the Washington state
chapter of the American Public Works
Association for the Cushman Trail. The
Cushman Trail is a recreation lovers
dream. It provides Gig Harbor with over
seven miles of trail system and includes
viewing outlooks, rock walls, seating
areas, restrooms and benches.
Gig Harbor is located 23 miles from
Seattle via the Bremerton ferry and 15
miles from downtown Tacoma. Seattle
Tacoma International Airport is 45
minutes away, and Portland International
is three and a half hours. Tacoma
Narrows Airport is located in Gig Harbor.
Whatever your desires may be, Gig
Harbor has you covered. We encourage
you to take your time and explore the
entire peninsula area.
Other stops not to miss
Grab a bite: The world-famous Tides Tavern on the
waterfront or the newly-opened Table 47 at Olympic
Towne Center. Gig Harbor hosts a handful of great
eateries, many with award-winning menus and chefs!
Raise a glass: Heritage Distilling is the first and only
craft distillery in the country to offer individuals the
opportunity to legally be involved in the making of their
own small batch distilled spirits. Other watering holes
include 7 Seas Brewing, Wet Coast Brewing, Gig Harbor
Brewing and Olalla Valley Vineyard in Olalla.
Harbor WildWatch: This 501(c)(3) is dedicated to
helping visitors and residents become more aware about
our interesting ecosystem. Visit the laboratory at the
Skansie Visitor & Interpretive Center.
Arts alive: We are a great art destination with beautiful
galleries, several art events and festivals throughout the
year and two great performing arts companies, as well
as summer concerts in the park.
Sleep on the water: Don’t own a boat? Don’t fret. Sleep
on one at Pleasurecraft Houseboats or the Fleet Suites
at the Gig Harbor Marina.
Gardens galore: Beyond the Gig Harbor Garden Tour
gardens (June 23-24), there are amazing venues with
beautiful gardens and unique accommodations that are
available to the public for weddings, romantic getaways
and events.
Take a walk: Gig Harbor is famous for its self-guided
walking tour with great stories about historic homes
and businesses. Pick up a guide at the Skansie Visitor &
Interpretive Center.
Walk the bridge: A park sits below the double spans
of the Tacoma Narrows Bridges and provides visitors a
great viewing area to watch the bridges rise out of the
water.
Step back in time: Gig Harbor BoatShop and Eddon
Boat Park provide classic boat rentals during the summer
months. Rent several rowboats and one very special
vintage electric launch at reasonable hourly rates.
Grab a kayak: Gig Harbor and the Key Peninsula
provides a marine trial system around the south Puget
Sound. See page 53 for information about the Kitsap
Water Trails. Grab a glimpse of the city’s canoe & kayak
team, five-time national champions.
Learn about history: The city’s heritage is unique and
a treasure we are trying to protect. Heritage markers
along the waterfront identify 18 sites of significance.
Visit an historic schoolhouse: The state-of-the-art
Harbor History Museum offers a chance for folks to
create opportunities to experience the history of the
Gig Harbor Peninsula, including the 1893 Midway
Schoolhouse and the 65-foot purse seine, Shenandoah.
The Skansie netshed: The historic shed is home to the
Skansie Netshed Foundation, a not-for-profit 501(c)(3)
organization, that was a place of work and refuge for
Croatian brothers Anton and Vince, and the crew of the
commercial purse seine boat, Avalon.
A WELCOME
FROM THE MAYOR
By KIT KUHN
The Maritime Gig Festival / Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony is a
tribute to the fishing industry that helped to shape this town.
Greetings and welcome
to the Gig Harbor
peninsula, a very
special place. We
hope you will be captivated by
the spirit of this community and
discover many experiences in
our beautiful maritime city.
Gig Harbor is a place of
neighborhoods, families and
bustling businesses. Get out
on the water where you will
see kayaks, sailboats, yachts
and even our own gondola,
alongside the historic maritime
fishing fleet. Take a walk
along one of the most scenic
waterfronts in the Pacific
Northwest and gaze at majestic
Mount Rainier with stately
evergreens rising to each
side. Gig Harbor offers miles
of shoreline sidewalks and
hiking trails minutes away in
spectacular forests.
Shop, dine, stroll, stay… we
have it all! Downtown boasts of
quaint restaurants, live theater
and unique boutiques featuring
local artists. Uptown is home
to more than 30 shops and
restaurants with a new IMAX
cinema. Olympic Towne Center,
our newest addition, is home to
Ocean 5 with bowling and farmto-table
meals under one roof.
Gig Harbor North has a state-ofthe-art
hospital and bustles with
beautifully designed large retail
stores.
Our Maritime Gig Festival /
Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony
brings the community together
June 2-3 with a tribute to the
fishing industry that helped to
shape this town and its colorful
history. Learn more about
this rich heritage at the three
free waterfront museums. The
Harbor History Museum tells the
story of our heritage, fishing,
lumber and agriculture; Gig
Harbor BoatShop is where you
can learn, watch and participate
in boats being built and restored
and Harbor WildWatch at
Skansie Park is a hands-on
environmental educational
encounter with our natural
harbor wildlife.
Looking forward, we are
hoping to enhance our city by
adding to outdoor activities
for residents and visitors. This
encompasses 35 acres that we
hope will boast multiuse, lit
turf fields, walking trails and
other outdoor amenities with
public input. We are looking
forward to partnering with
other organizations to make this
happen. On the waterfront, we
are in the process of creating
Ancich Waterfront Park for
manpowered watercraft and a
restored, working netshed to
continue our fishing heritage.
Our diversified residents bring
a special experience to everyone
who visits. Get to know our
hometown and the people who
make it great. I look forward to
seeing you and encourage you
to stop by City Hall to say “hi.”
Ocean 5 entertainment center — and Table 47 —
encourages opportunity for social connection
Visitors to Olympic
Towne Center are due
for an exciting new
social experience as
they enter the 57,000-squarefoot
Ocean 5 and Table 47
entertainment and dining
establishment, envisioned
by Troy Alstead, former chief
operating officer of Starbucks
and longtime Gig Harbor
resident, who felt inspired by
his travels around the globe to
create an unparalleled space
that fosters community
connections, is
environmentally
responsible, and
promotes an
appreciation for
the conservation
of the world’s
oceans.
“Ocean 5 is
about social and entertainment
experiences,” said Alstead, who
came up with the concept over
a decade ago and has
The albacore tuna
crudo from Table
47 came with
spicy pickled
Fresno chiles and
a flavorful poke
sauce.

een slowly building on it ever
since. “We want to be part of
people’s ability to have social
engagement. It’s about creating
place and about saving the
oceans.”
Alstead said his inspiration
for Ocean 5 is derived from his
passion for the world’s oceans
and being a responsibly-built
business. Alstead also wants
guests, if they so choose, to be
engaged with stories about the
oceans, the seas and the Puget
Sound. There are five oceans
in the world and they’re all
connected, he said, so the name
suggests connections.
Table 47, Alstead’s farmto-table
restaurant concept,
housed in the same building as
Ocean 5, is designed to work
in tandem with Ocean 5 or as a
separate experience, if guests
so choose. The name references
the restaurant’s location on the
47th parallel that circles the
earth, again encouraging the
notion that we’re all connected.
“Table 47 is about how we
can connect over the table,”
Alstead said. “It’s dinner at
the table, and it’s business
meetings around the table
— that’s our gathering place
and it’s the same around the
world. (The table) is a place of
engagement.”
As for Table 47, it’s a sizable
restaurant of 7,000 square
feet with a comfortable, casual
environment and upscale food.
It can seat 200 (with another
seating for 100 on a seasonal
patio). The restaurant also
houses a bar with a tap list
featuring 40 Northwest beers
and wines and upscale cocktails.
Alstead’s concept vows to
be environmentally friendly.
Even before construction of
the building, Alstead said
geothermal wells were drilled
3.6 miles into the ground under
the parking lot to heat and cool
the building, equating to 80
percent of the energy saved.
Another 15 percent of energy
will be saved, thanks to a LED
lighting design. Expansive
windows and solar tubes from
the roof will minimize the
amount of electricity used
on lighting during daylight
hours. Recycled and reclaimed
materials were also used in the
building construction. Ocean 5 is
applying for LEED certification.
Guests will have opportunities
to play 10-pin or duckpin
bowling — a concept new to
the west coast that is wildly
popular on the opposite
side of the country. There is
a two-story, laser challenge
area accommodating up to
40 players. An arcade room
features up to 50 games. Guests
can take their accumulated
points to the adjoining
redemption prize room for
unique prizes, featuring some
eco-friendly options.
Private event and party spaces
accommodating groups of up to
more than 400, on the first and
second floors, some featuring
10-pin and duckpin lanes,
are ideal for birthday parties,
receptions, anniversaries and
celebrations of all kinds.
“I think we’re creating
something that is fun
and complementary
to the
community,”
Alstead said.
If there’s one tip owner Gary
Parker wants his diners to
know, it’s that his barbecue
restaurant is like a Texas
barbecue restaurant in every
way.
When the ‘cue is out, it’s
out. It’s a Texas tradition.
“We are operating just like
the real Texas joints. Like
Franklin BBQ in Austin.
Meaning, we make as much
as we can and sell until we
sell out,” said Parker, about
BBQ2U, 814 Point Fosdick
Drive NW, Gig Harbor.
Lesson: Get there early.
Like you’d find in Texas,
the restaurant is cafeteria
style with complete counter
service, meaning diners are
served everything at the
counter.
Pulled pork is Carolina style,
but otherwise Central Texas
is the theme here. Parker
cooks on a big kitchen
smoker fueled with Texas
mesquite or post oak (or
fruitwood or local alder in a
pinch).
Brisket, beef ribs (one of few
in the area to serve these),
pork ribs, pulled pork,
smoked chicken thighs,
smoked turkey breast,
sausage. No meats are
served sauced.
Sides include fried okra,
macaroni and cheese,
baked beans, potato
salad, coleslaw and
banana pudding.
Hours are 10:30
a.m.-8 p.m. daily, or
until the meat runs
out.
Waterfront dining exceeds expectation
Brix 25, owned by Thad Lyman
and Katie Doherty, for years
served guests at 7707 Pioneer
Way. It moved in April to a new
downtown waterfront location at
3315 Harborview Drive, adjacent
to sister restaurant NetShed No.
“It’s a phenomenal location,
centrally located, with a
beautiful view of the harbor and
the mountain, and has its own
dedicated parking,” said Lyman,
who is head chef of Brix 25.
The couple said Brix 25 exudes
the hallmarks of fine dining in
the area, featuring homemade
pastas, hand-cut steaks, a
fantastic wine list and elevated

daily dinner service at 4:30 p.m.
“Our staff is made up of
professionals that take their craft
seriously,” Lyman said. “We’re
known for our happy hour items
in the bar. Our menu can change
based on seasonality.”
The pair said the new location
features an expanded amount
of outdoor dining. Inside, an
exhibition-style kitchen give
guests a clear-eye view of the
handcrafted cooking being
done.
Doherty’s craft cocktail and
of Northwest wines are available
for purchase by the glass or
tap, many from local breweries.
A curated cocktail list rotates six
times a year.
“Brix has a great reputation
and a great following,” Doherty
said. “We believe we over
deliver on value every day, and
that is a good place to be.”
JIM’S TEACHES STUDENTS
TO LOVE CLASSIC CARS
Experience Gig Harbor’s new student-teaching museum
40 GIGHARBORGUIDE.COM | 2018-19 GIG HARBOR VISITORS GUIDE
No visit to Gig Harbor is
complete without a stop at the
new student-teaching museum.
Jim’s Classic Garage & Auto
Museum, 3028 14th Ave. NW,
features dozens of vintage
automobiles and a freestyle
learning program for students.
The museum is the fulfillment
of Jim Sullivan’s lifelong dream.
After a successful career
in commercial real estate,
Sullivan, chairman and founder,
envisioned a unique educational
program where students would
develop a love of classic and
muscle cars in a supportive and
freestyle environment. Sullivan
saw firsthand how students
without a captivating vision or
hands-on-mentoring were less
likely to thrive and succeed in
life.
At the museum students are
taught to value and respect
the vehicles, the craftsmanship
and stories behind each car.
Introducing younger people
to classic cars and teaching
them to work on them builds
self-esteem and a sense of
accomplishment, Sullivan said.
Through teaching and
modeling hard work and skill
development, the student learns
all aspects of how these great
machines are built. There’s no
better way to learn than to jump
in and do it.
The program empowers
students who might not be
destined for college and who
need tangible skills as they
enter the workforce. Each
participant wins and so does the
community, Sullivan said.
Jim’s Classic Garage and Auto
Museum is a 501(c)(3)2
nonprofit organization.
Jim’s museum offers
a variety of classes for
kids or teens interested
in learn about classic
automobiles. We
offer classes including
detailing, electrical,
interior, interior fabrication,
metal fabrication, automotive
passionate about helping
students learn a wide range
of marketable skills that make
finding a career easier,” Sullivan
said.
Historic
netsheds
As early as 1910, Gig
Harbor’s first netsheds
began appearing along
the waterfront. These
simple structures, many
constructed with rough,
hand-hewn fir, were used
by local fishermen to store
nets and fishing gear.
As the town grew, many
netsheds were displaced
by new development and
commercial marinas. Today,
only 17 netsheds remain
along the western shoreline,
but Gig Harbor Bay still
boasts the largest inventory
of historic netsheds on
the Puget Sound. Visit
the Skansie Visitor and
Interpretive Center to pick
CATCH A GREAT
HARBOR VIEW
By ANDREW FICKES
With its town
history rooted in
commercial fishing
and the water as its
signature feature, the city of Gig
Harbor invests significantly in
ensuring visitors have plenty of
access points to view its crown
Take a gander of the waterfront
with a bevy of access points
jewel. Here are a few places to
get you started:
Welcome Plaza
at Jerisich Dock
The Welcome Plaza on
Harborview Drive features
rooftop deck seating and views
of the harbor. A word of caution:
no dogs allowed on the deck.
Underneath the deck in the
breezeway is a digital-touch
screen menu featuring a
directory of restaurants, retailers
and service-oriented businesses;
a city map; the weather; and a
comprehensive list of citywide
events. In that same breezeway
are public restrooms and
restroom and shower facilities

for paid-moorage guests.
The Welcome Plaza features
a sculpture of a Gig Harbor
fisherman working his nets in
honor of the fishermen who
went to sea at great risk and
were forever lost.
Visitors can enjoy a picnic
lunch at the picnic benches near
the street or on the dock. Life
jackets are available to borrow.
Visitors can walk the pier.
Finholm View Climb
The 100-step Finholm View
Climb was installed in July
1999 by the Gig Harbor Lions
Club, saluting the memory of
Edward and John Finholm, who
operated the Finholm Market
nearby.
Located across from Anthony’s
Restaurant, the view climb
features multiple landings,
offering different vantage points
for viewing the harbor, the
marina and Mount Rainier on a
clear day, and nearly a dozen
benches for resting. The view
climb is well lit, providing access
from dawn to dusk. Restroom
facilities and visitor information
are available at the North
Harborview Drive entrance.
With a good book and a good
camera (to take breathtaking
photography), the view climb is
a relaxing getaway.
Ancich Waterfront Park
The city anticipates late
summer or fall to open
Ancich Waterfront Park along
Harborview Drive. Acquired
by the city in 2013, the
parcel is under an acre and
represented one of the very few
undeveloped waterfront parcels.
“This is in a unique location
that takes the history of Gig
Harbor with the importance
of commercial fishing and also
brings in the newer use of the
bay, which is non-motorized
craft. We’re putting future and
past together.”
The Ancich Pier on the west
side will feature a fully-functional
rehabilitated netshed serving as
the focal point of the view from
the 2,500-foot platform atop the
boat storage facility.
“We really wanted to highlight
the heritage and tradition of
commercial fishing,” Knutson
said. “There are a lot of
netsheds in the Harbor, but this
will be the only publicly-owned
netshed that will be used for its
original historic purpose. This is
very important from a historical
standpoint for our community.”
A grand staircase will lead from
the platform down to a lowerlevel
plaza, featuring picnic
benches and public restrooms.
GET OUT
Personal tours — either by pleasurecraft or gondola —
offer a different perspective.
A
view of Puget Sound
from Gig Harbor is
beautiful, but if you
desire a personal
experience on the water then
there are affordable and unique
options.
Gig Harbor Gondola provides
extraordinary excursions aboard
an original Venetian gondola led
by experienced Venetian rower
John Synco. It’s ideal for couples
or groups of six.
“I’m open year-round, but
summer is my peak season,”
Synco said. “Rides close to
sunset are extremely beautiful,
so I tell people to try and book a
few weeks in advance to secure
the time they want.”
Synco offers the cruise
(one hour) at $85 per couple
and the extended cruise (90
minutes) at $115 per couple.
Each additional person is $20.
Children five and under are free.
An appetizer is included. Guests
are allowed to bring wine or a

everage of their choice. The
rides are ideal for all occasions.
Call 253-432-0052 to book.
A second option is Destiny
Harbor Tours and Riviera
Cruises. Destiny’s daily tour
leaves at 3:30 p.m. from the
dock at Anthony’s Restaurant.
The two-hour tour goes under
the Narrows Bridge and comes
back along Point Defiance and
Salmon Beach, a historic 1906
community. Riviera Cruises
offers a sunset cruise leaving
from the Maritime Pier next to
Tides Tavern.
“The trips are very interactive,”
said Captain Tom Drohan said.
“The real star of the show is the
Kitsap
Peninsula
National Water
Trails
The Kitsap Peninsula
National Water Trails
(KPNTW) wraps around
371 miles of spectacular
shoreline from Foul
Weather Bluff on the north,
Bainbridge Island
on the east, Gig
Harbor and
the Tacoma
Narrows
bridge on
the south,
and the
waters of
Hood Canal
on the west.
The trails travel
around the shorelines of
three large land masses:
Kitsap Peninsula, Key
Peninsula and Bainbridge
Island, and are located
primarily in Kitsap County,
as well as Mason and Pierce
counties. Currently, 13
separate trails, designed
as a continuous, seamless
regional experience, make
up the network. Each trail
can be experienced as a day
trip. Trail amenities include
access sites, boat launches,
day-use areas, fishing
accesses and camping
areas. Water trails can also
serve as venues that create
educational experiences.
In 2014, the Kitsap
Peninsula National Water
Trails received a grant
from the National Park
Service for staff support to
assist in the development
of a comprehensive
management plan to
maintain, grow and monitor
the trails. Information
HERITAGE, HISTORY
Harbor WildWatch,
a marine and
environmental
education
organization, in partnership
with the City of Gig Harbor,
has posted several interpretive
natural history and marine signs
in parks and beaches of Gig
Harbor bay. Through the harbor,
you will learn about:
The salmon life cycle
Find out more about the chum
salmon and what exactly are
those black barrels for? The
black barrels are remote site
incubators and they can be seen
from the viewing platform at
Donkey Creek Park.
Respect the riparians
A riparian is where water
and land meet. It plays a vital
role in the health of our entire
ecosystem. Learn about the
riparian, aquatic and upland
zones at Donkey Creek Park.
Habitats of the harbor
Located near the home of the
Harbor History Museum, this
interpretive sign explores the
variety of habitats found in the
waters off (and on) the shores of
Gig Harbor.
The wetlands around us
At Wilkinson Farm Park —
along Rosedale Street, blocks
up from Harborview Drive —
view a true wetland buffer area.
Maybe even catch wildlife!
And there is self-guided tour
of the heritage makers, too.
Galloping Gertie
At Ferry Landing Park near the
mouth of the harbor, learn about
the collapse of the Narrows
Bridge that fateful day in which
the road tilted, swayed, and
eventually began to break up.
First settlers
At 3207 Harborview Drive,
near Jerisich Dock, you will
find information about three
friends fishing on Puget Sound
when they were forced into a
protected harbor to wait out a
storm, only to eventually call the
area they discovered, home.
From Croatia to Millville
At the Dorotich Public Dock,
near 3323 Harborview Drive,
is where the first homes in the
harbor were built and the town
of Millville was established. In
2014, Gig Harbor city officials,
Washington state leaders and
local residents welcomed the
then-Prime Minister of Croatia,
Zoran Milanovic, in a public
ceremony including a tour of the
Millville District. Gig Harbor’s
ties to Croatia remain strong
today.
The last minutes
of the original
Narrows bridge.
Heart of the harbor
Peninsula
Gateway file
At the corner of Harborview
Drive and North Harborview,
you will find the heart of the
harbor. The community’s last
and longest running sawmill
called this corner home for close
to 100 years, and where the
Austin Erickson-style log homes
originated.
From valley to bay
Crescent Creek Park sits at the
northernmost corner of the bay
and is where families began to
homestead throughout Crescent
Valley in the late 1880s. Today,
families still visit the park and
play on the all-inclusive play
structure while admiring the
wood carving by local artist Jeff
Samudosky. For a complete list
of markers, see gigharborguide.
One Hope is all about loving and serving our Gig Harbor Community
One Hope Church is a multi-denominational Christian Church committed to the
ministry and mission of Jesus. We serve and support various local, national, and
international Christian efforts. We don’t own our building, but rather we rent Sunday
morning worship space at the Ocean5 social gathering place. This enables us to
release additional funds toward our mission and ministry efforts as well as
supports our vision to take the church to where the community gathers.
Worshipping
Community Groups
We gather each Sunday
at 9:30am for large
group worship at Ocean5
and also facilitate other
community based worship
gatherings in Gig Harbor.
Life Together
Groups
These home-based
groups meet regularly
for fellowship, worship,
