China
Hong Kong
This project imagines a fictional government’s
plan of building a new city rid of colonial
influences in Northwestern New Territories.
It represents the government’s ambition and
optimism in a future which the new Hong
Kong (Xinxianggang) is no longer a city
state but instead becomes half of the twin
city that is the Hong Kong (Xinxianggang)
and Shenzhen agglomeration. The unique
economic and legal framework of the new
city allows for the symbiotic cooperation with
Shenzhen in the advancement of economic
development without the constant struggle
for self determination demanded by the
citizens of old Hong Kong. Xinxianggang
becomes the Chinese ideal of the SAR
system, one that emphasizes on One
Country instead of Two Systems.
Interventions in urban, district and building
scales were employed in investigating the
issue of connectivity of different fabrics.
