It looks like Aberdeenshire Council are about to remove the free parking hour in its Peterhead car parks. Once 

again Peterhead is about to bear the brunt of the axed been wielded disproportionately on the largest town in 

the Shire. Few would dispute that Peterhead town centre traders are struggling to compete with the large 

superstores with their free car parking which is about to be compounded with Aldi soon to come on stream. 

Peterhead Councillor Alan S. Buchan, who was instrumental in establishing the free first hour of parking, said 

the scheme has proven to be a great lifeline to many struggling town centre businesses. The statistics show 

that use of the car parks have increased by over 200%. This has truly been one of the few success stories 

Peterhead town centre has seen. However, once again the anti-Peterhead views of Aberdeenshire Council will 

now see the scheme axed to pour more money into the southern parts of Aberdeenshire.

NFU Scotland responds to UK Government 

‘Health and Harmony’ consultation 

NFU Scotland has made the case for a profitable and 

vibrant future for Scotland’s farmers and crofters when 

responding to the UK Government’s consultation: ‘Health and Harmony: The Future for Food, Farming and 

the Environment in a Green Brexit’. 

While the Health and Harmony consultation document sets out future proposals for England, NFU Scotland is 

developing its own thinking for a future agricultural policy for Scotland, which it continues to discuss in detail 

with both the Scottish Government and Westminster. 

NFU Scotland shares the view that Brexit provides an opportunity to move out of the shadow of the CAP and 

states that it is vital that future agricultural policy must be developed and implemented in line with the distinctly 

different needs of Scotland. 

While most of the consultation is England-only; there are elements of the consultation which are of particular 

interest to Scotland. These are the future frameworks needed to facilitate intra-UK trade and future funding 

levels for Scottish farming. 

NFU Scotland’s Director of Policy, Jonnie Hall said: “It is vital that the unique needs of the Scottish agricultural 

industry are recognised in the development of a new agricultural policy framework. 

“The current devolution settlement of policy and regulation to the constituent parts of the United Kingdom 

should be respected and maintained. That said, the UK’s various Governments, Parliaments and regulators 

should jointly take every step to retain and protect a single market access for food, agricultural commodities, 

live animals and plant and plant products throughout the UK. 

“The task of establishing commonly agreed UK frameworks is hugely important to preserve the integrity of 

the internal UK market. These frameworks must be arrived at by mutual agreement between the UK Government 

and the devolved administrations, including the Scottish Government.

Officers are appealing for information after a coach was vandalised 

in Aberdeen last week (Tuesday May 8, 2018). 

The incident happened while the bus, which was carrying football 

supporters, was driving westbound on Hutcheon Street near 

Mounthooly roundabout between 9.50pm and 10pm. 

Local Area Commander Chief Inspector Martin Mackay said: 

“Enquiries are ongoing to trace a group of three males, described 

as ‘youths’, who were seen in the area at the time. They were 

last seen heading in the Gallowgate direction and one was wearing 

a white jacket. 

“An object was thrown at the vehicle causing damage to a window. 

What is more concerning is the fact the coach was moving 

at the time – such a reckless act put everyone on the bus in danger 

aswell as pedestrians, and it goes without saying that the 

outcome could have been much worse. 

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 101

He added: “Given the general good behaviour of the crowd last night, this incident is particularly disappointing. 

“However I would like to thank the overwhelming majority of fans who supported our officers and club stewards in helping get

MORAY FIRTH WILDLIFE 

Police Scotland and partner 

agencies have launched a 

campaign to encourage people 

to respect the marine wildlife 

off the Moray Firth coastline. 

Anyone who disturbs cetaceans 

- such as dolphins, whales or 

porpoises - or puts them at risk 

of injury may face criminal 

charges. 

During the summer of 2017, 

incidents included private boat 

operators getting too close to a 

pod of pilot whales near the 

Kessock Bridge and a kite surfer 

allegedly disturbing 

dolphins feeding at Chanonry 

Point. 

The viewpoint at Chanonry 

Point near Fortrose is a popular 

spot for people wanting to 

watch dolphins in the Moray 

Firth. 

However, a number of 

incidents were reported in the 

area last summer involving 

personal boats and kite surfers 

risking disturbance to dolphins. 

Whales, dolphins and porpoises 

are protected under the Conservation 

(Natural Habitats) 

Regulations 1994. 

This includes protection from 

disturbance - whether it be 

reckless or deliberate - harassment, 

killing and injury, with 

offences subject to a fine of up 

to £5,000. 

Warmer weather leads to an 

increase in marine craft operating 

around Scotland’s coast 

and this naturally leads to an 

increase in the likelihood of an encounter with a cetacean. 

Wildlife Crime Liaison Officer, Constable Daniel Sutherland said: "We entirely understand that people will 

want to get a good view of dolphins and other marine life off the coastline. 

"We do not want to discourage this but want to make sure people do so responsibly with respect for the 

wildlife. 

“Last year we received an increase in reports of water users getting far too close to cetaceans, sometimes for a 

good photo, or because of a lack of awareness surrounding their protection, or sometimes just a complete lack 

of regard for their safety. 

“Today we are launching a poster campaign which we will be placing at prominent entry points to the Moray 

Firth and harbours which will give advice to all water users about how to avoid disturbance to cetaceans. 

These will serve to increase awareness as we move through the summer months." 

The posters were funded by Scottish Natural Heritage and in consultation with Whale and Dolphin 

Conservation.

in these areas must be made soon.

levels for agriculture and rural development in 

Scotland must be made. Year on year, agricultural 

support consistently accounts for around two-thirds of 

the Total Income From Farming (TIFF) in 

Scotland. And for many farms and crofts in more 

disadvantaged areas, the reliance on support is 

significantly greater. 

“NFU Scotland welcomes the UK Government’s 

commitment to provide the same cash total in funds for 

farm support, as is currently paid out under the CAP, 

until 2022 or the lifetime of the parliament. However, 

questions do remain on how this money will be delivered 

to Scotland after ‘EU exit day’ in 2019. In the 

longer term, with the development of new 

domestic agricultural policy, at least the 

same level of public investment in Scottish

said: “Whales, dolphins and porpoises are spectacular to 

watch, but they can easily be disturbed by human activity. This can interfere with their breeding and feeding 

activities. When you’re out on the water it’s important to be aware of how your behaviour will affect them. 

"We strongly recommend that anyone watching marine wildlife keep their distance and follow the Scottish 

Marine Wildlife Watching Code. 

"This offers practical guidance for everyone who watches marine wildlife around Scotland, whether they are 

on the shore or at sea – and will help you stay within the law. 

"In the Moray Firth, local tour boats have signed up to the Scottish Marine Wildlife Watching Code, as well as 

a local code, to reduce disturbance and protect these special creatures. 

"Choose an accredited operator if you want a tour of high quality and low impact, or watch from the shore.” 

Alison Rose, Scottish Dolphin Centre manager, said: "Just like dolphins, people love messing about in the 

water. 

"However, these days that can mean using sport and leisure equipment that is fast, heavy and sometimes very 

loud in the case of jet-skis. 

"This can disturb and even be really harmful to dolphins. 

"We want everyone to have fun, but it’s important we are all aware that when we’re on the water we’re 

sharing that space with whales, dolphins and other marine mammals for whom the sea is their home."


The Scottish SPCA is reminding 

anyone looking to buy or rehome 

an animal to consider rehoming 

one of the older animals in the 

care of their centre in Aberdeenshire. 

Scotland’s animal welfare charity 

is currently caring for over 50 

pensioner pets across Scotland 

and is reminding the public of the 

many benefits of rehoming an 

older animal, such as a dog, who 

will require less training and are 

often more calm than puppies. 

Scottish SPCA Chief Executive 

Kirsteen Campbell said, “We 

have seen a change in the 

demographic of the animals that 

come into our care over the 

years. 

“We’re now caring for older 

animals with more complex 

health conditions. Whilst our 

expert teams are well placed to 

give these animals the love and 

care they need, we know that 

nothing compares to a loving 

forever home. 

“Rehoming week is the perfect 

time to try and find these ‘golden 

oldies’ a loving new home as 

we’re spreading the word about 

all the wonderful animals in our 

care.” 

Centre manager Graeme Innes 

said, “We have lots of animals 

coming in and out of our centres 

all the time, but it’s the older 

ones that can often be the hardest 

to rehome. 

“We find older animals are overlooked 

but we can certainly assure 

the public that these pensioner 

pets still have lots of life 

left in them!” 

Graeme added, “Ted the older 

horse arrived into our care over 220 days ago. We’ve been desperate 

to find him a home to spend his golden years but sadly he’s been 

overlooked, which we believe may be down to his age. 

“Ted really is a lovely wee guy who is full of character, he’d bring 

lots of entertainment to any family he joins! 

“He’s good to handle and will happily live out all year round 

providing he has access to shelter. 

“We would love to see Ted find a new home this Rehoming Week.”

Anyone interested in rehoming from Scottish SPCA can visit their 

local animal rescue and rehoming centre between 10-4 every day

Road verges: 20% drop in diversity of wild flowers puts 

bees at risk as plant 'marauders' take over 

* 'Silent killer' air pollution and poor management have 

reduced floral richness by nearly 20% on verges 

* Plantlife reveals the 'dirty dozen' plant marauders that are 

increasingly rampant on road verges 

* Wildlife at risk: Red clover and lady's bedstraw - two 

particularly wildlife-friendly plants - are experiencing the 

most rapid decline on verges 

* BUT ALL IS NOT LOST; better management of our road 

verges could have spectacular results for wild flowers and 

wildlife, delivering an estimated 400 billion more blooms 

(or 6,000 flowers per person). 

A marauding gang of invasive native plants including nettle 

and bramble) are thriving on a diet of ‘junk food’ and taking 

over our once flower-rich road verges reveals Plantlife, Europe's 

largest conservation charity dedicated to wild 

flowers and other flora. 

Almost 90% of Britain’s wild flowers prefer lower-nutrient 

soil but they are being crowded out of the countryside as a 

result of air pollution creating unnaturally rich conditions, 

particularly on our road verges. Analysing trends since 

1990, Plantlife has identified that our road verges are undergoing 

a dramatic change with plants that enjoy soil rich in 

nitrogen - much of it deposited from vehicle exhausts - 

spreading like wildfire including stinging nettle, bramble, 

rough meadow-grass, cow parsley, Yorkshire fog and 

creeping buttercup. The boom of these 'nitrogen guzzlers' is 

crowding out wild flowers that had found a haven on our 

road verges, including some of our rarest and most threatened 

species such as fen ragwort and wood calamint which 

are now clinging on at a handful of verges, their last 

remaining habitat. Victims of the changing verge include
