In 2009 then Mayor Wes Huntley
made a proclamation declaring
the Town of Quartzsite
the “Rock Capital of the World.”
Quartzsite is well-known for its
many gem and mineral shows
and year-round vendors of
rocks, geodes, and treasures.
Mines surround the area,
and rock landscaping or “hardscape”
is commonplace in
snowbird yards. Rockhounding
is a favorite winter pastime,
and there are organizations,
such as the Roadrunner
Gem and Mineral Club and the
Quartzsite Metal Detecting
Club, that have hunts, classes,
club meetings and events.
