Sicamous Yesterday
Sicamous (meaning narrow or squeezed in the
middle) has a history that is comprised of many
interesting subjects, from Native heritage to
Columbia gold discovery, paddle wheelers to
the construction of the Canadian Pacific
Railway (CPR.)
In the 1800s this area was inhabited by a seminomadic
group of Natives called the Shuswaps.
In this area, however, they were known as the
“Schickamoos” and an 1871 provincial map
shows Schickamoos Narrows, which was
known as a “meeting place of Indians.”
The local band, Splatsin, get their name from
the late elder Cindy Williams who explained
that it is pronounced ‘Splajeen’ and means riverbanks, which is where they lived,
along the banks of the Eagle, Salmon and Shuswap Rivers.
Their traditional territory was huge, extending from Mica Creek in the north to
Kettle Falls, Wash. to the south, and from Monte Lake to the west and Nelson to
the east. Their primary village sites were at Sekmas from Old Town Bay to
Sicamous, and Splatsin (Enderby) where the majority of the population lives
today. There were other major villages at Mara Lake, Mabel Lake and other
locations that provided good fishing opportunities.
By 1864, gold was discovered on the Columbia River, and Seymour Arm soon
became a supply centre in the Big Bend gold rush. The Hudson’s Bay Company
built the first steamer, followed quickly by others. This continued until the
completion of the CPR, at which point they were doomed to extinction. Rail
transport was faster and after the 1920s the steamers were used mostly for
pleasure.
In 1885 permanent settlers started arriving after the driving of the Last Spike of the
CPR at Craigellachie, linking Canada sea to sea. Old Town (or Eagle Pass
Landing) became an instant town in 1871 and was the central supply centre for
railway construction.
In 1949 the bridge was built across the channel—which had previously been just a
ferry crossing—with several hotels opening over the years, including the well
known Sicamous Hotel in the early 1900s. It was, however, demolished in 1964
but there are still many inquiries about the hotel to this day.
Sicamous certainly has an interesting past and, with its many houseboats and
beautiful countryside, it surely has a bright future. With incorporation in 1989,
Sicamous continues to be a vibrant, growing community and enjoys a continued
relationship with the Splatsin First Nation. 7

On the Water
…….Motorized fun
Sitting on the shores of two beautiful lakes—Mara and Shuswap—life happens on
the water in a Sicamous summer. No matter your speed, there’s something for
everyone; kick it up and ride the wake, slow things down and paddle at leisure or just
soak up the sun. A number of public boat launches and docks provide easy access to
the water, as do the many marinas that offer boat slips or storage with valet service.
On the Water
…..Non-motorized fun
This wet and wild playground isn’t limited to boaters, however, with many
businesses in town also renting personal watercraft, kayaks and paddle boards
with plenty of space for all to share the water, no matter what your speed.
If you prefer terra firma, the Beach Park is the place to be with a beautiful sandy
beach, large grass area with picnic tables and a splash park and playground for
kids. Mara Lake Provincial Park is another option just a few minutes south on
Highway 97A, also featuring a great beach and boat launch.
In Sicamous we understand that pets are a part of the family too and, therefore,
cater to our furry friends as well with a dog park that backs onto the Eagle River,
giving them a beach vacation as well.
No matter what your preference, come hit the water and discover that life is
better at the lake.
11

On the Water
…….Experience the Narrows
In Sicamous, you truly are living on the water. Two unique businesses provide
everything you need without ever having to leave the lake. Both the Shark Shack
and The Seastore are located in the Cinnemousun Narrows where all four arms of
the Shuswap meet.
The Shark Shack is proud to be the ONLY floating, licensed restaurant on
Shuswap Lake. The restaurant is located on the second deck with the ability to let
the sun in or keep the rain out, and provide fantastic, revolving views of the lake
and surrounding scenery. Join them for an truly al fresco meal and be sure to
leave your mark, they encourage guests to sign the walls, tables and even the
ceiling.
The Seastore is the Shuswap’s Original Floating Store where they sell everything
you could possibly need, including premium boat gas, groceries and general
merchandise, bathing suites, clothing and fishing tackle and licenses. It’s your one
stop shop on the lake
12

On the Mountain
…….Sledding / Snowbiking
Voted 2017 SledTown ShowDown Champion of Western Canada, Sicamous has
four areas for riders of all abilities—Owlhead, Queest, Blue Lake and Eagle
Pass—with both groomed and ungroomed trails to explore, snow-filled bowls to
drop into and breathtaking views to soak up.
If you come unprepared for the call of the mountains, or experience a machine
malfunction, there are different businesses in town that rent them out, carry the
necessary gear and offer repairs and parts services.
Avid sledders can find snow on the mountains starting as early as the fall and
lasting all the way to late spring, making for a good, long season.
While sleds have always hit the hills here, more and more riders are now
choosing snow bikes. Whichever machine you prefer, Sicamous is the place to
sled!
On the Mountain
…..Hang gliding/off roading
Arguably one of the most iconic views of Sicamous is up on Queest Mountain
at the hang gliding ramp, which is popular not only with scenery seekers but
also those daredevil jumpers. Being a forest service road that leads to the
ramp, the rougher terrain is also favoured by off-road enthusiasts who hit the
hill with quads and dirt bikes. Given the terrain, however, anyone using the
road does so at their own risk.
There are, however, other trails for such use as well, including most of the
sledding areas that cover a lot of the backcountry.
With these amazing resources, Sicamous is truly an adventure just waiting to
be had.
14

Pick a Trail
Sitting in a valley, the Sicamous area has an extensive system of 26 trails that offer
breathtaking views and can be explored on foot, bike, ski, snowshoe and,
occasionally, horse. The varied landscape caters to all levels of experience and
physical agility, with differing length treks, allowing hikers to personalize their off
-road adventure and tailor it to their needs.
A full list of trails, maps and directions can be found online at
Golf Sicamous
Golfers can take advantage of the Shuswap sun by hitting the greens at either
of Sicamous’ courses, or they can go a bit further afield and access numerous
others in the area for a different challenge every day.
In town, there is the option of a nice stroll on the nine-hole course with greens
that meander along the Eagle River, or the 18-hole course whose more
mountainous terrain requires a cart and provides spectacular views of Mara
Lake.
Celebrate the highlights—and forget the lows—of a good game at either of
their licensed clubhouses, both of which have patios so you can continue to
soak up the sun well into the evening.
On the Ice
…..Sicamous Eagles
Having produced numerous NHL
players, Sicamous is very much a
hockey town and is, therefore, very
invested in the local team.
The Sicamous Eagles Junior ‘B’
Hockey Club officially formed on May
17, 1994 and is one of 20 teams in the
Kootenay International Junior Hockey
League (KIJHL), one of the largest
and strongest such leagues in B.C.
The team carries a mandate to provide
opportunities for young men to
develop their hockey and life skills
with the goal of having a career in the
hockey arena.
The Eagles have enjoyed a close affiliation with many teams in both the BC
Hockey Association and the Western Hockey League, working closely with
team officials in directing players to the opportunities available to them through
these organizations. Many Eagles alumni have moved up to play on Junior ‘A’
and European teams, while a number of those graduates—including Kris
Beech, Shea Weber, Cody Franson, Deryk Engelland, Adrian Veideman,
Kris Hogg, Andrew Ebbett and Andrew Kozak—have played or are currently
playing in the NHL. The Recreation Centre has a proud display of memorabilia
over the years from our local players.
The Eagles have only missed the playoffs two times in their 22 history,
however, they were provincial champions twice which qualified them to attend
the Western Canada Championships which, for Junior ‘B’ teams, is the
equivalent to the Stanley Cup). The first time, they finished fourth at the
Westerns, and the second time, they won it all.
The Eagles have a 52-game regular season schedule, with home games drawing
an arena full of avid fans and supporters. Those game nights are well
orchestrated, and fans unable to attend can still keep up on the action by tuning
in to the team’s live Internet pay-per-view broadcasts.
See their roster, stats and full schedule online at www.sicamouseagles.com or
RCMP Musical Ride
Tuesday, July 17
Sicamous is welcoming one of the most Canadian of events this summer, the
RCMP Musical Ride.
The RCMP Musical Ride is performed by a full troop of 32 riders and their
horses. Their performance consists of intricate figures and drills choreographed to
music. These movements demand the utmost control, timing and coordination.
The Musical Ride performs in up to 50 communities across Canada between the
months of May and October. They help raise thousands of dollars for local
charities and non-profit organizations.
The Musical Ride provides the opportunity to experience the heritage and
traditions of the RCMP. The riders act as ambassadors of goodwill who promote
the RCMP’s image throughout Canada and all over the world.
A world-famous show, the Musical Ride has played an important role in the
RCMP since 1873. From its inception in 1873, the North-West Mounted Police
(NWMP) relied on skilled riders to carry our police duties across the Prairies.
Patrolling the vast and sparsely inhabited area, NWMP members were frequently
the only government officials new settlers would encounter and were essential to
preventing prairie fires.
To break the monotony of endless riding drills, members of the Force commonly
competed amongst themselves and performed tricks on horseback. In 1876, some
of these tricks and exercises were performed at Fort McLeod, AB. This is believed
to be the first public performance of what would eventually evolve into the
Musical Ride.
Come out and enjoy the tradition when the troop
stops in Sicamous to perform Tuesday, July 17 on
the football field at Eagle River Secondary School.
Help us keep Okanagan—Shuswap waters zebra and quagga mussel free!
If you know someone who boats, fishes and travels in and out of our valley with
their boat or other water recreation equipment, ask what they’re doing to prevent
the spread. Make sure they follow the “Clean. Drain. Dry” protocol and are
stopping at watercraft inspection stations.
Clean. Drain. Dry. Is now part of modern boating and watercraft etiquette in
Canada and the U.S. It has also been adopted as a best practice by B.C. and
several U.S. states to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. It’s what
anyone should do with their water recreation equipment whenever traveling from
one lake, river or stream to another, even if it’s a paddle board or just wading
boots that have gotten wet.
HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:
•Clean off all plants, animals and mud from your watercraft and related
equipment (e.g. boots, waders, fishing gear). If a power washing station is
available, use it.
•Drain (on dry land) any item that can hold water (e.g. buckets, wells, bilge and
ballast).
•Dry all items completely before launching the watercraft into another body of
water.
Zebra and quagga mussels put several of the assets we treasure most as residents
of the Okanagan—Shuswap at risk, including:
•Water quality
•Beaches
•Fish
•Lake ecology
•Property values
•Tourism
•Our economy 27
