frankfortstation.com School the frankfort station | May 24, 2018 | 11 Student Reporter Social media posts should be shared with caution Michael Svehla Hickory Creek Middle School sixth-grader Snapchat, Musical.ly, Instagram, Twitter, etc. are all advancements we’ve made through the Internet in the 21st century, and what we use in our lives. They are meant to be used in a good way, by sharing life experiences. It’s best to use these sites properly and for the right use. In health class we have recently learned about oversharing personal information. If people get private information, they can use it against you. For example, someone can screenshot your postings, make another account, and use your name/sharings. They can simply pretend to be you, saying inappropriate things. There is a way to find who did it and get rid of the account, but it’s a long and hard process. You can save yourself a whole lot of trouble by simply making your account private. It’s best to just share with your friends. Even sharing this way, there are still some techniques to follow. You should be careful even with what you post to your friends. Just because you’re friends now, doesn’t mean that you will be later. You may get in a fight and they may use what you shared to hurt you. If your account is private and you are cautious about what you share, you should still share things properly. When you share something, don’t brag. You can show others what you did, but boasting about it isn’t necessary. You also don’t need to post absolutely everything in your life. Nobody wants to hear where you went for dinner or what movie you watched. It’s important to understand these ideas so you are careful and share in the right manner. If you do, you’ll be just fine and won’t get into any trouble or be in any uncomfortable situations. Hickory Creek Middle School students earn awards in economic concepts contest Submitted by Frankfort School D157-C Five Hickory Creek Middle School eighth-grade students earned awards in the Econ Illinois Economic Concepts Poster Contest. They participated in an awards reception that took place on May 9 at the University of St. Francis. The Econ Illinois annual Economic Concepts Poster Contest challenges students to use their imaginations and creativity, as well as their own life experiences, to visualize an economic concept and turn it into a colorful illustration. The contest, which is intended to ignite creativity and promote critical thinking, was designed to help students better understand and interpret the economic world around them. Students learn one or more economic concept and use Hickory Creek Middle School student award winners in the Economic Concepts Poster Contest (left to right) Haley Bishop, Lyndsey Golaszewski, Rachel Miller, Sophia Barnard, Sydney Whitemiller pose for a photo. Photo submitted their creativity and art skills to demonstrate their understanding of the concept in a colorful drawing. Teachers submit their entries to their regional center for judging. Up to 24 entries from each region are recognized and move on to the state-level competition. The top 12 statewide winners and 12 honorable mention winners in the state are recognized with awards and featured in an annual calendar. The following Hickory Creek Middle School eighth-grade students were recognized: Lyndsey Golaszewski earned first place in state and second place in region. Rachel Miller earned an honorable mention at state and first place in region. Haley Bishop earned third place in region. Sydney Whitemiller earned third place in region. Sophia Barnard earned an honorable mention. Hickory Creek teacher Michelle Sommer sponsored the students in their efforts. Photo submitted Students raise money for St. Jude Children's Hospital Submitted by Dr. Julian Rogus School The students at Dr. Julian Rogus Elementary School in Summit Hill School District 161 were offered the opportunity to participate in the St. Jude Children’s Hospital Math-a-Thon. Math-A-Thon is an educationally-based program that challenges students to work on math problems that are fun and intriguing while providing a positive learning experience. This year, the students of Dr. Julian Rogus raised $12,854 for the children and families of St. Jude. Proceeds help to cover all costs for families without insurance and will cover all costs above those reimbursable by third party insurance for families who have insurance. The school is very proud of the students of Dr. Julian Rogus for taking the time, energy and generosity to help such a great cause.
