frankfortstation.com news the frankfort station | May 24, 2018 | 3 Frankfort D157-C Board of Education Board votes on online textbooks and district-wide improvement projects Megan Schuller Freelance Reporter Several decisions were made regarding online social studies textbooks and key district improvement projects during Frankfort School District 157-C’s monthly Board of Education meeting on May 16, which was held in the board room inside Grand Prairie Elementary School. After much debate, the board voted in favor of a $65,040 six-year contract for an online Discovery social studies textbook for Hickory Creek Middle School’s sixththrough eighth-graders. The vote was 7-1, with board member Edith Lutz casting the dissenting vote. The board debated whether or not they should do a yearlong trial first and questioned how students without computer access will do their homework. Superintendent Maura Zinni assured the board that they would always respond to the needs of students. A survey was taken regarding students’ home computer access, and parents of the few students that answered and indicated they would have difficulty completing homework because of little to no access received phone calls to discuss their needs. “We feel comfortable that we have laptops that will be retired in a year or two,” Zinni said. “They’re perfectly good, and will come with a power cord. They can set it on their desks at home, plug it in and access everything that they need.” Zinni also proposed extended days so the students can come in early or stay late at school to do their homework while being monitored. Board member Tom Reidy said that kids need to use online textbooks to prepare them for their future. “I’m sure there’s ways to work around these things and to push forward with the most up to date way of learning,” Reidy said to the board. “It’s definitely going to be this way when they get to college. It’s definitely going to be this way when they get into the workforce. To me, to not move forward and to not concretely make this decision would be a mistake.” Grand Prairie Elementary School’s $739,922 roof update was also a topic of discussion and passed unanimously. The roof, which has outlived its expected lifetime and warranties by 12 years, now needs to be redone before it causes further water damage to the building. Ridgeworth Roofing will replace the 74,000-square foot two-ply roof and reinforce areas that are prone to damage. “Ridgeworth did do our work at Chelsea during last summer and I was very happy with the work they did there,” Director of Finance and Operations Kate Ambrosini said. The board also approved the Hickory Creek School parking lot project. The $625,570 project will include a full asphalt and curb replacement to the south and main lots, which have structural issues due to the heavy bus traffic that the lots were not designed for. “A lot of the cracks were down to the base, which just doing an overlay would not fix,” Ambrosini said. “The cracks would reappear in the next five years. We are confident that a good portion of the base is still going to be good, but some portions might need replacement.” The month-long Chelsea Intermediate School lighting upgrade project was put on hold due to possibly interfering with the school’s halfmillion dollar boiler being installed. The board chose to not proceed at this time and canceled all bids for the project, with rebidding starting in the fall. The action to place a Will County 1 percent sales tax for school facilities on the ballot was voted down. The proposal was projected to bring in an estimated $1.1 million for school facilities, but board members felt that with the district’s financials in order, it was not necessary. “Frankfort is proposing a one percent tax increase tax that will be on the ballot as well,” Zinni said. “It just seems to be more taxes without any study or proposal background.” The sales tax will be brought back for a vote in August. After closed session, the board voted to settle a lawsuit filed by a former employee regarding her contract. The school district was named as a defendant in a lawsuit by an employee after not receiving a renewal contract after the 2015-2016 school year. “The district placed defense on the lawsuit in the hands of their insurance carrier and the carrier vigorously defended the suit,” board member Gina Briese said. “As generally happens in federal court cases, a settlement conference was held on April 26, 2018, with a magistrate judge. In effort to avoid the cost of continued litigation, representatives from the district’s insurance carrier agreed to settle the litigation for $35,000, all of which will be paid by the carrier.” The proposed agreement does not admit any wrongdoing or liability by the district or its personnel, Briese stated. In return for the settlement, the former employee must waive all claims regarding employment by the district, not apply for re-employment within the district and must dismiss the case with prejudice, meaning it cannot be refiled. Amid the discussions of projects to better the district, Amy Romero spoke during the public comment session to commend Zinni and other administrators for their work to create an advanced math track for the Chelsea fifthgraders.
