Glencoe Village Board
Glencoe’s Walgreens to relocate
to Winnetka next month
Results in loss of sales tax
revenue for the Village
With a new Walgreens under construction
just down the road in Winnetka,
Glencoe residents have been
wondering what would become of the
Walgreens location in their town.
“We received a number of inquiries
from residents regarding the new Walgreens
location that’s currently under
construction in Winnetka and what
that might mean for the current Glencoe
location in Hubbard Woods Plaza,”
Village Manager Phil Kiraly said.
Kiraly provided an answer to resident
inquiries at the Glencoe Village
Board’s Thursday, May 17 meeting.
The Glencoe Walgreens, located at 63
Green Bay Road, is slated to close in
June with the opening of a new Walgreens
location at 925 Green Bay
Road in Winnetka next month. The
Winnetka location was formerly the
home of Mrs. Green’s Neighborhood
Market.
“We were informed this week by the
ownership of Hubbard Woods Plaza
that Walgreens confirmed with them
that the Glencoe location will be closing
in June,” Kiraly said.
Kiraly is working with the owners
of Hubbard Woods Plaza to find a tenant
to fill the space that Walgreens will
vacate next month.
“Obviously from all of our perspectives
this isn’t good news, but we are
working proactively with the owners
of the shopping center to discuss their
plans to market and consider other
uses for the property,” Kiraly said.
“We’re going to be doing all we can
to work proactively with the owners of
the shopping center.”
The lease for Walgreens in Glencoe
runs through 2021 and the Village is
looking to have someone sublease the
space for the remainder of the Walgreens
lease.
“They have three years left on their
lease,” Kiraly said. “One of the things
in our conversations with the property
owners we have talked about is ways
that they’re going to be working with
Walgreens to attempt to find sublease
tenants that would hopefully fill that
space. They don’t want a dark space
anymore than we do.”
Kiraly noted since the 63 Green Bay
Road site is the second-largest retail
space in Glencoe at 12,000 square
feet, it could be hard to get a tenant for
the building once Walgreens closes.
“It’s actually the second-largest retail
space in the community which is
sometimes interesting because it feels
from the street to be quite small,”
Kiraly said. “But it’s about a 12,000
square foot footprint, which is a bit
of the problem because it’s a difficult
space to refill.”
Walgreens leaving is expected to result
in a sales tax revenue loss for the
Village.
“I don’t know the exact figure,” Kiraly
said regarding the loss. “I know
that it’s not an insubstantial hit and not
something that we’re happy about.”
New finance director
Glencoe has announced
a replacement
for former finance director
David Clark, who
departed in January. Nicole
Larson, currently
the finance director in
Vernon Hills, will start Larson
her new position in
Glencoe on June 11.
“After a comprehensive nationwide
search with over 70 applicants from
seven states, I’m pleased to report that
Nicole Larson has accepted the position
of finance director with the Village,”
Kiraly said.
Kiraly was impressed with Larson
during the interview process.
“Those who had a chance to meet
her during the recruitment process I
think would agree she’s a very gifted
public finance professional,” Kiraly
said. “I’m very much looking forward
to her joining our team.”
“We are committed to creating
an economic climate
that will keep the bright
Perl is also eager to improve
the university’s alumni
engagement strategies to
encourage alumni to commit
their time and resources
to the University of Illinois
long after graduation, he
said.
Besides education, Perl
is deeply committed to the
Jewish community and
of directors for the American
Israel Public Affairs Committee
(AIPAC), the board
of directors for the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Chicago, and the executive
committee for the Spertus
Institute for Jewish Learning
and Leadership. He is
