William Rawson Carl Thorne-Thomsen Iraq War Uday Singh Matthew Coutu (Lake Forest High School graduate) Memorial Day ceremonies set for Lake Forest, Lake Bluff Staff Report Lake Forest and Lake Bluff will once again host their annual Memorial Day ceremonies and celebration Monday, May 27. Lake Forest will begin its ceremony and celebration at 10:45 a.m., Monday, May 27 in Market Square. The American Legion, McKinlock Post 264 invites residents to join in celebrating and honoring fallen U.S. service members for the annual Memorial Day Ceremony held in Market Square in Lake Forest. This year the Legion is honored to have Commander Omar Martinez from Naval Station Great Lakes as a special guest speaker, and the Lake Forest High School Concert Band to accompany the ceremony with patriotic music. Lake Bluff will begin its ceremony at 10 a.m., Monday, May 27 on the Village Green. The guest speaker is Paul Baffico, of Lake Bluff, a Vietnam War veteran, a volunteer docent at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the 2012 Red Cross Military Hero of the Year for Greater Chicago and founder of the Lake County Veterans and Family Services Foundation. Whether it is learning to ride a bike, playing sports or learning how to fix a car, dads are there for it all. In honor of Father’s Day, The Leader is asking residents to submit a photo capturing what makes their dad so great. Maybe it’s a picture of you two at graduation or shooting some late night hoops in the driveway — whatever sweet photo you have to share, The Leader wants to see it. Send us a photo of your dad, and we’ll publish the winning entry, plus others, on Thursday, June 15, just in time for Father’s Day, which is Sunday, June 18. The author of the winning photo will receive a prize from a local business to share with his or her dad. The deadline for entries is noon Friday, June 8, giving residents two weeks to submit a photo. All ages are encouraged to enter the contest, but dads must reside in Lake Forest or Lake Bluff. Entries must include the father and author’s first and last name, as well as a phone number for the author. Montessori students help with invasive species clearing project Submitted by Montessori School of Lake Forest Montessori School of Lake Forest partnered with Lake Forest Open Lands Association, and Lake County Forest Preserves on their Woody Invasive Species Clearing Project. Students at the Montessori School of Lake Forest are well versed in all aspects of cultivating a school garden, caring for their vast outdoor classroom and appreciating the natural beauty of their outdoor environment, prairie, woodland, wetland and savanna. In October of 2017 students embarked on another educational adventure to learn about managing invasive species and saying “Bye, Bye to Buckthorn. “ Dr. Ann Maine, president of Lake County Forest Preserve District (LCFP) joined MSLF students for the culmination of this year long initiative on May 9. “If every neighbor of LCFP worked this hard Students (left to right) Oliver Moore, Hunter Liu and Natalie Zhang work together to clear a large piece of buckthorn. Photo Submitted in the effort to manage the buckthorn, we would be in good shape,” Maine said. Back in October, students and teachers learned about the larger LCFP initiative and about buckthorn within their space. The impact of the balance between an invasive species and the surrounding environment was discussed, and the need for the community to unite to manage and eradicate invasive species in order to support new growth of native species. Since then, MSLF students, parents and staff have been hard at work removing buckthorn from the school’s 5.5 acre outdoor classroom. Luke Buckhardt and Peter Gordon, both from Lake Forest Open Lands ,joined the students outside. At four different workstations, children from 5-15 years olf, pulled and lopped buckthorn of all sizes. Julia Lunn, an outdoor education director at MSLF, noted the arrival of the Spring Ephemerals Trillium, May Apple and Virginia Waterleaf to students, showing that the work they had already done in the fall to clear buckthorn is already encouraging the growth of these special natives. “The work is ongoing. We will continue in our outdoor education work to manage the buckthorn,” she said. NEIGHBORS From Page 9 memorializing Michelle lined the basement of St. Norbert Church. Those who wrote loving thoughts most commonly described Michelle as honest, trustworthy, caring, a bright light upon others, a rock for her family and an overall positive influence. “She was honest, kind, warm-hearted and always did the right thing,” said Matt Rudy, the fiance of Michelle’s sister, Jenny, who spoke on behalf of the Math family. The Glenbrook North community was both shocked and saddened by the news of Michelle’s passing on May 8. Math, a senior at GBN, passed away following a brief, unexpected illness. According to a statement from the family, Michelle went to the hospital with back pain and a headache just a few weeks ago. After extensive testing, doctors believed she had a rare reaction to a virus, which caused aggressive, inoperable brain swelling. Full story at NorthbrookTower. com. THE WINNETKA CURRENT 30 years pass since Hubbard Woods School shooting This past Sunday marked a big anniversary for Winnetka. However, the day is one that neither Winnetkans wish they had to be reminded of nor one which should have even happened in the first place — not in a town as quaint and community-oriented as Winnetka, not anywhere. May 20 marked 30 years since Laurie Dann — a Glencoe native and New Trier alumna with a known history of mental illness — strolled into Hubbard Woods School armed with two handguns, killing one student, Nicholas Corwin. While the event’s anniversary has sparked local media attention, particularly through an ABC 7 news special aired Thursday, May 17, Winnetka Public Schools District 36 is not planning on having any formal recognition. “Rather, it is our hope that we can collectively appreciate the resilience and beauty of the school community we share at Hubbard Woods,” said Kate Hughes, communications and community relations coordinator for District 36, in a press release. On May 20, 1988 at Hubbard Woods School, Dann pushed a boy into a washroom and shot him, attempted to shoot two boys walking by and then walked into a secondgrade classroom where she opened fire, striking five students and killing 8-year-old Corwin. Minutes later, she fled to a nearby home, telling a mother and her 20-yearold son, Philip Andrew, that she was raped and shot her assailant. While Andrew was able to take one gun away from Dann, she kept him hostage and shot him in the chest. Once police and paramedics arrived, he was taken to Highland Park Hospital, where he survived.
