Scouts offense starts quick, dominates Titans
Aggression and possession
at the outset were
the major elements that
went into Lake Forest’s
conquest over Glenbrook
South.
The Scouts finished off
their regular season play
with a 12-8 win over the
visitors Thursday, May 18,
at home.
It was Senior Night for
the Scouts and, as Coach
Marc Thiergart so aptly
put it, “we came out firing
on all cylinders.”
In seizing a 6-1 first
quarter lead they repeatedly
forced turnovers and
controlled the ball. Most
of their time was spent in
the GBS end of the field
Leading the onslaught
were freshman Connor
Armstrong and senior Jack
Mislinski, who will be
playing both lacrosse and
football at the U.S. Military
Academy at West Point next
year. Both scored two goals
in the quarter after goals by
sophomore Nate Field and
junior George Schoette in
the first three minutes ignited
the scoring explosion.
“It was a really good
team game offensively,”
Mislinski said, looking
back on the early scoring
spree that made the difference.
“We got a lot of
people involved. Our sets
were working and our middies
were moving well. It’s
all about capitalizing when
you get the opportunity.”
When GBS mounted its
only sustained attack of
the quarter with just under
seven minutes to play
sophomore goalie John
Welsh responded by making
four stellar saves.
“John stepped up,”
Thiergart said. “He’s a
sophomore and he played
like a senior.”
The Titans’ struggles
on offense continued during
the second quarter
and at halftime they were
looking at an 8-1 deficit.
Compounding their problems
junior goalie Kip Hugueley
had to leave them
game after being injured
in a second-quarter collision
and was replaced by
sophomore Colin Casey,
who normally is either an
The way the game was
trending it seemed likely
that in the second half the
Scouts would activate the
running clock that takes
effect when a team has a
12-goal lead.
But GBS didn’t give up
and gradually became the
dominant team in the second
half, outscoring Lake
Forest 7-4 during the final
24 minutes.
“I definitely would like
that first half back,” said
Dylan Garvey, the DePauw
recruit who scored the only
goal of that half for the Titans
and then contributed
two third-quarter goals to
the belated rally that saw
senior Jack Speers get two
goals and sophomore Connor
Karsh score one in the
fourth quarter.
“Jack and Connor and I
have a lot of good chemistry
working off one another,”
Garvey pointed out.
The Titans ended the
regular season with a
13-4 record. Their other
losses were to defending
state champion New Trier,
Glenbard West and Grayslake
North.
In leading the Scouts to
victory, Mislinski wound
up with four goals and
Armstrong with three.
Another conspicuous contributor
was senior Chris
Cavalaris, who set up two
of the goals in the first
quarter and got one of his
own in the third quarter.
“We dominated the first
half but one of the problems
we’ve been working
on is finishing,” said Thiergart.
“We’ve got to put a
whole game together.”
The Scouts, who last
year advanced to the state
tournament semifinals before
losing to runnerup
Loyola Academy, take an
11-6 record into this year’s
tournament. Their regular
season losses came at the
hands of New Trier, Loyola
and Grayslake North and
teams from Ohio, Michigan
and Indiana.
“Our depth is our
strength,” Thiergart said.
“We have a lot of freshmen
on the team and they’re all
playing and contributing.”
