Academy eighth-grader
Maanav Kaistha is a Lockport resident who
was chosen as Standout Student for his
academic excellence.
What is one essential you must have when
studying?
Music usually, or someone to talk to. It’s
strange, but I cannot study without these
things for some inexplicable reason.
What do you like to do when not in school or
studying?
I enjoy studying computer science when I
am at home. It really lets me better understand
and appreciate the technology around
us.
What is your dream job?
I’d like to be a physician when I grow up,
following in my father’s footsteps. Although
it seems very stressful, seeing the near-hundred
calls he gets daily, I can and will put in
the effort to get there.
What is one thing people don’t know about
you?
I am very good at piano and guitar, though
I really dislike the instruments.
Whom do you look up to and why?
Mr. [Thomas] Malcolm, a science teacher
who retired from MPA last year, is the person
I look up to. To have that much dedication
to one job is astounding and to teach as
well as he did just boggles me. No matter the
project, topic, assignment, he always made
it extremely easy to take in and understand.
Who is your favorite teacher and why?
I would say Mrs. [Peggy] Scolan. Her way
of teaching math is so compelling and fun.
It’s astounding, to say the least, how far I’ve
come in math over my two years at MPA.
What’s your favorite class and why?
For me, it would have to be science class,

because the discussions we get into every
day are very interesting and easy to get into.
Every day I can take lots of key, new information
from the class, without any stress or
excessive studying.
What’s one thing that stands out about your
school?
MPA has opportunities that few schools
across America allow, from high schoolers
traveling across the world yearly to allowing
seventh-graders to live on a farm for a week!
It’s just incredible how much this school
does, and how well the school does all these
trips.
What’s your best memory from school?
That seventh-grade trip I mentioned, staying
at the Heifer Ranch in Arkansas last year,
was just incredible. The service and activities
we did daily really brought our class together
in a way few previous trips had done.
It immersed us into life as refugees and really
humbled me on the true state of the world.

LTHS inducts students into
world language honor societies

High School World Languages
and Cultures Department
recently inducted more
than 110 students into their
respective honor societies in
French, German, Japanese
and Spanish.
The keynote speaker at
the induction was Sarah
Lallky, a 2016 graduate of
LTHS. Sarah is an esteemed
alum who was an active
member in both National
Honor Society, Spanish
Honor Society and Interact
Club. She was recognized
for her academic achievements
being selected as a
Top Ten and Illinois State
Scholar. Currently, Sarah is
studying nursing at St. Louis
University and hopes to receive
a minor in Spanish and
Psychology. She currently
is living in Madrid, Spain
and using her language skills
learned at LTHS.
Before an audience of parents
and family members,
students became members of
their honor societies led by
LTHS teachers Karla Button,
Japanese; Kathy Pratt,
Spanish; Drew Reaves, German;
and Tina Sochacki,
French. In their respective
languages, students promised
to continue their commitment
to the study of their
language and further develop
their skills and knowledge
of culture.
