No matter how old or how young, residents are encouraged to apply by writing an essay on how they hope to benefit from higher education, either in a trade or technical school, or university. “It’s going to change their story,” president of the Lockport Resource Center Cean Magosky said. LRC is still accepting applications for their fourth scholarship they plan to award this spring. A partnership among LRC, Lockport Loves and the Lockport Police Department has continued to make its annual bike drive a success by raising money for the scholarship. On average, approximately 35-40 bikes in various conditions are donated every year during the drive that started at the beginning of the month. The Lockport Police Department has been the donation site where people could drop off their bikes. “We had run into some kids that needed bicycles, and personally I knew I had a couple bikes in my shed that my kids had grown, so I brought them in and we realized lots of people in town have bikes in sheds they don’t use, nor intend to use,” Lockport Police Chief Terry Lemming said. He said just last week, one resident came and dropped of eight bikes to the station. Once necessary repairs are made, a couple bikes will remain at the station in case officers run into someone who needs one. “We try to get involved in anything to be more active in the community,” Lemming said. “It’s just another initiative where we can help the community and show we care.” On Saturday, May 19, police officers and those with LRC gathered together to give each bike a thorough safety SEIGLE’S NEW LENOX LOCATION ONLY Bring in this coupon to save $250 on any Cabinetry and/or Countertop purchase of $2,000 or more.* SEIGLE’S NEW LENOX LOCATION ONLY Bring in this coupon to save $1,000 on any Cabinetry and/or Countertop purchase of $7,000 or more.* Seigles.com *Coupons cannot be combined or used with any other offer.Valid at New Lenoxlocation only. All purchase amounts arebeforeTax-Delivery-Installation. A distribution day will be held Saturday, June 2 at Whizzy Puffs Sweet Spot in Lockport where people can come purchase the bikes with cash only. A $25 donation is asked for adult bikes, a $20 donation for children’s bikes and scooters, and $15 for tot size bikes. In the past, the bikes have been stored at the police department following the drive, but this year, owner of Whizzy Puffs Mervet Nolte has offered one of her store fronts as a storage for LRC. “Our hope for the bike drive is to get bicycles that aren’t being used out of peoples’ way into the hands of people who need or want them, affordably, safely, and to raise a little bit of awareness of our scholarship fund,” Magosky said. If someone is unable to afford to purchase one of the bikes or uses it as a means for transportation, Magosky said those circumstances are considered separately. “If someone has a need, all they have to do is ask, and that’s our policy at the thrift store, is if anyone is in need all they need to do is ask,” he said. Last year, roughly six bikes were given away for free, and others were sold at a discounted price. “The name of the thrift store reflects our mission— and that’s what we’re trying to do,” Magosky said. He said doing projects like these are good for the community, and LRC continues to offer various opportunities like the bike drive for residents and non-residents throughout the year.
