Young Actors Project, a Malibu-based performing arts troupe, has announced that Malibu youth are to present an original teen version of “Bonnie and Clyde” and two original young versions of “Pinocchio” at Malibu Playhouse. YAP’s original production of “Bonnie & Clyde” digs deep into the true, untold story of these two infamous criminals and their family backgrounds; and brings it to life in a way never seen before. Shows of “Bonnie & Clyde” will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 31; 7 p.m. Saturday, June 2; and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 3. The program will also be offering two original youth versions (ages 9-12) of “Pinocchio” that take the timeless tale and beloved characters to the stage. Those shows will take the stage at 7 p.m. Friday, June 1; 3 p.m. Saturday, June 2; and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 3. The two age groups each deliver unique twists to the key elements of the classic story. The productions, directed by Shoshana Kuttner, star Malibu elementary, middle school and high-school students. The three casts have been rehearsing for the productions since January. These shows appeal to audiences of all ages and are great family and community events. The Malibu Playhouse is located at 29243 Pacific Coast Highway. malibusurfsidenews.com Life & Arts Malibu surfside news | May 24, 2018 | 23 Betts unveils new EP, readies for tour with dad Barbara Burke Freelance Reporter He is named after the legendary Duane Allman and he is the only son of Dickey Betts, who along with Allman and others in the legendary 1970s southern rock band the Allman Brothers pioneered country rock as a genre and made some of the most iconic music of that era. Duane Betts is a multitalented crooner and guitarist who says that his versatile music derives from integrating country, blues and rock. He is also a stellar guitarist in his own right. Betts is touring this summer with Devon Allman, son of Gregg Allman, and with his father’s band Dickey Betts & Great Southern. Duane Betts’ music is his own, with due regard to his heritage, which includes his father being rated No. 61 on the Rolling Stones’ list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists. Malibu Surfside News sat down with Duane Betts to chat about his lineal and Malibu heritages and his musical vision. “Being named after Duane Allman is a huge honor,” Betts said. “He is one of the greatest guitarists of all time.” As with many Malibuites who are musically inclined, Betts finds Malibu to be a sanctuary and defines it as an inspirational place to make music. “There is a very strong energy in Malibu that is obviously a large source of creativity for me,” Betts said. “There is something about “Watching my father and Warren Haynes play every night had a huge impact on my growth as a guitar player. Backbone69 featured Betts, drummer Alex Orbison (Roy Orbison’s son), bassist Damon Webb and Chris Williams as lead singer. Berry Oakley Jr., the son of the bassist who helped define the Allman Brothers’ sound, later replaced Webb on bass. Betts also played for a local favorite band, Whitestarr, and he plays guitar with his dad in Great Southern. Last year, he and Cisco Adler, who also is from Malibu, toured with Jamtown, a group that also featured Donavon Frankenreiter and G. Love. Betts has a gravelly, solid voice with deep range, and his often-lengthy guitar performances display an aptitude and range that few musicians rival. “Duane is a beast on the guitar,” Adler told Malibu Surfside News. Betts, however, was not originally going to be a guitarist. “I was given a guitar first, but it seemed too hard so I wanted to play drums instead,” he said. “I started with playing drums when I was 5 or 6. I only started really learning guitar when I was 13. I was really interested in business side of the shows when I was a kid, but I never really wanted to do anything else as a career besides music.” Betts grew up on the road and learned to play the guitar from his dad and Warren Haynes, a longtime Allman Brothers guitarist. Betts never received formal training in music. “I have my PhD from the university of life experience,” Betts said. “I was mostly self-taught from listening to records and from picking up what I heard from the talented musicians whom I was fortunate to know.” Delving deeper, Malibu Malibu musician Duane Betts grew up in the midst of musical greats including his father, Dickey Betts, of Allman Brothers fame. Photo by Kaelan Barowsky Surfside News inquired whether Betts ascribes to a theory that musical talent is inherited. “There are inherent traits that are definitely passed through DNA and can’t be taught,” Betts said. “However, watching my father and Warren Haynes play every night had a huge impact on my growth as a guitar player. Hearing two great guitarists play and being able to ask them questions helped shape my ability.” Playing guitar and making music runs deep in Betts’ veins. “One of my first musical memories is attending one of my dad’s concerts in Virginia when I was really young,” he said. “I enjoy everything about being a musician, creating and composing music, revising and fine-tuning it, but there is something about playing and traveling that I love.” It’s good that he enjoys touring, because his summer will involve a lot of it. He and Devon Allman have launched a world tour for The Devon Allman Project. “The tour has been great. Devon and I have developed a really strong musical bond and our team is really amazing,” Betts said. “I am really enjoying spending time with everyone we have with us. It’s been a really positive experience thus far and it has only just started.” Betts is also preparing to perform music from his brand new EP: “Sketches of American Music.” Further, he will join his father to perform some gigs. “The tour with my dad hasn’t started yet, but I am really looking forward to being on stage with him again,” he said. “The time was right for him to come back and I couldn’t be more excited.” Betts is, however, defined by his own brand of merged genres. “I would always want my music to be viewed as classic, timeless and, most importantly, authentic,” he said. “I think the reference ‘steeped in blues, rock‘n’roll, and country’ is a good way to describe where I come from and my musical character.” Betts’ next California show is slated for this Saturday, May 26, when he is to perform at the Simi Valley Cajun & Blues Fest.
