Works builds youth
confidence on stage
For the past 17 summers,
children ages 8-13 have
learned about musical theater
firsthand at Music Theater
Works in Wilmette.
“I think it was Lucy who
convinced me we really had
a good thing going,” said
General Manager Bridget
McDonough when asked
about her favorite memories
of the company’s summer
workshop programs.
“Lucy was a sassier, more
self-assured Nathan Detroit
in ‘Guys and Dolls’ than
any 10-year-old little redhaired
girl had a right to be!
“I was flabbergasted
when I found out later
that on the first day of the
workshop, Lucy’s mom
approached our director to
say her daughter had never
been on stage before and
might need a little extra
coaching and coaxing to
get over her shyness. Believe
me, on stage that girl
was not shy!”
Performing offers so
many benefits to young
people — it builds confidence,
enhances observational
and analytical skills,
fosters teamwork, and,
above all, is a lot of fun.
At Music Theater Works,
children get to sing, dance
and act in a nurturing and
fun atmosphere. No experience
or audition is required,
and everyone gets a part.
“Our staff does a wonderful
job giving each of
the kids their moment to
shine, regardless of their
experience level,” Mc-
Donough said.
Young people ages 8-13
learn from professional
actors and counselors to
prepare a performance of a
mini-musical.
“You’d be amazed at
what these kids accomplish
in only six days,”
McDonough said. “I know
Lucy’s parents were!”
Five separate one-week
workshops will be offered
this summer, based
on popular musicals. Each
workshop is from 9 a.m.-
3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday
at the Music Theater Works
rehearsal center, 516 4th
St., Wilmette. On Saturday,
students gather for a
final dress rehearsal at 1
p.m. and offer a free public
performance for family and
friends at 4 p.m.

The fee is $380 per student
per workshop. Scholarships
are available based
on need.
In addition, a staged
summer teen production
of Cole Porter’s “Anything
Goes” is offered for ages
13-18 (June 11-29, with
performance at 7:30 p.m.
on June 29). Each role is
individually cast from auditions.
The production
features professional costumes,
sound and lighting.
Fee is $1,275 per student.
