6 | May 24, 2018 | The Northbrook tower news northbrooktower.com Police Reports Unknown substance placed in gas tank of vehicle A subject placed what police called an unknown substance in a vehicle parked in the 700 block of Skokie Boulevard at 4:52 p.m. on May 16. The substance caused damage to the vehicle. In other police news: May 16 • Someone stole the driver’s side mirror from a vehicle park in the 800 block of Dell between the hours of 2 and 7 p.m. There were no visible signs of damage from another vehicle and no debris or glass on the ground to indicate there was an accident. May 15 • A resident in the 2500 block of Walters was notified by the IRS that an unknown subject attempted to use their social security number to gain employment. May 14 • A resident of the 900 block of Sutton Drive reported they noticed several fraudulent charges on their credit card to a DSW store in Boston. They also received a call from Macy’s alerting them to two possible fraudulent charges that were placed online with delivery address to Yonkers, N.Y. • Fidel Lopez, 40, of Chicago, was charged with improper lane usage and driving with a suspended license at 3:09 a.m. in the intersection of Willow and Ravine Way. May 12 • Brooke V. Grossblatt, 30, of Chicago, was charged with retail theft at 3:55 p.m. at the Neiman Marcus store in Northbrook Court. Grossblatt attempted to leave the store with approximately $745 in merchandise without paying. She was processed and released on bond. • A purse was taken by unknown subjects(s) in the 100 block of Skokie Boulevard at 6:53 p.m. while shopping. • Several lawn care items were removed from the Willow Hill Golf Course between the hours of 4 p.m. and 7 a.m. • John B. Mugenyi, 30, of Crystal Lake, was charged with improper lane usage and driving with a suspended license at 2:15 a.m. in the intersection of Dundee and Fair. May 11 • Various items were stolen from an office in the 1400 block of Techny Road between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 8 a.m. • Miroslave Belici, 63, of Northbrook, was charged with violation of a red light and driving with a suspended license at 8:42 a.m. in the 700 block of Skokie Boulevard. • Three male subjects removed several purses from a display at the Lord & Taylor store at 7:17 p.m. and ran from the store. The winner of the men’s division of the 5K, with an ultra-fast time of 15:56.03, was Steffen Uhrich, a former Bradley University runner who moved to Park Ridge earlier this year. The women’s division winner was Columba Montes, of Chicago, with a time of 18:44.83. Although Isaak Bonnell, a fourth-grader at Pleasant Ridge, came in second in the boys 9 and under division of the 5K with a time of 24:22, he retained family bragging rights by outrunning his father, Steve Bonnell. “This is our third year of running in this race,” Steve Bonnell said. “The first year I came in ahead of him. Now, he just drops me.” State Rep. Laura Fine (D-Glenview) was another runner who made an impressive showing in the 5K, finishing third in the women’s 35-39 division with a time of 23:20. Glenview’s Niko Vla (No. 638) and Northbrook’s Ryan Carr (No. 554) won the 1-mile race during the 18th annual Lew Blond Memorial 5K on Saturday, May 19, at Northbrook’s Maple School. BELOW RIGHT: President Sandy Frum also recognized Tim Cassidy for 23 years of service. 93 citations issued as part of first distracted driving campaign Submitted by the village of northbrook The Northbrook Police Department issued 93 citations during Illinois’ first distracted driving campaign, according to a release sent out May 14. The increased enforcement was part of the National Distracted Driving Awareness Month effort supported by the Illinois Department of Transportation. “Driver distraction is a persistent issue in [Northbrook] and often has life-altering consequences,” Traffic Officer Chris Lacina said in the release. “We implemented this enforcement action to encourage motorists to drop it and drive.” During the two-week campaign, which ran April 16-30, the Northbrook Police Department handled 58 electronic communication device citations, two suspended/revoked licenses, five uninsured motorists, 13 speeding citations and 15 additional citations. “Distracted Driving Awareness Month may be over, but the Northbrook Police Department will continue working to reduce the number of drivers engaging in this dangerous behavior,” Lacina said.
