® 14 | May 24, 2018 | The orland park prairie NEWS opprairie.com Orland Park Police Department to offer Teen Citizens’ Police Academy Submitted by Village of Orland Park The Orland Park Police Department is to offer its Teen Citizens’ Police Academy, giving young adults an inside view of law enforcement. The department is to offer a free two-day worksite-based program for village residents between the ages of 15 and 18, introducing teens to a number of the department’s programs and responsibilities. The teen academy is to be held from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 5, and Wednesday, June 6, at the Orland Park Police Department, 15100 S. Ravinia Ave. Participants must pass basic background checks, and space is limited. Participants will learn about recruiting, training, dispatch, patrol, K9, traffic enforcement/DUI, internet investigations and more. Topics also include crime scene investigation, the department’s use of force simulator, search and seizure law, and a mock courtroom trial. The Teen Citizens’ Police Academy includes two sessions, with lunch provided by the Village of Orland Park. Those who complete both sessions of the academy are to receive certificates. Registration forms can be found on the village’s website at orlandpark.org by searching 2018 Teen Citizens Police Academy. Police saw Weinert come from the auto shop to a 2000 Ford Focus in the parking lot of Walgreens, 7960 159th St., and get into the passengers seat, according to the report. The vehicle reportedly then exited the lot northbound on 80th Avenue. Weinert was not wearing a seatbelt, and the vehicle was stopped on Wheeler Drive, east of 80th Avenue, police said. He was spotted reaching down near his feet twice, once before and once after the traffic stop, police said. An officer spotted four new packages of lug nuts in the backseat and a bulge near the ankle area of Weinert’s pants, according to the report. Two more lug nuts sets in hard plastic cases and an anchor point reportedly were found on his person. • Derwin Covington Jr., 21, of 14542 Union Ave. in Harvey, was cited with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to give information, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage and operation of uninsured motor vehicle after he allegedly sideswiped another vehicle while driving westbound in the 7600 block of 159th Street. A 41-year-old was driving a vehicle in the curb lane when struck by the vehicle driven by Covington, according to the report. He then allegedly made a U-turn and fled eastbound on 159th Street. A witness to the vehicle fleeing provided police with the plate registration that ultimately led to Covington, who first made contact with police by phone April 28 and then came to the station May 2, police said. April 15 • Shannon M. McGrail, 21, of 16206 Alexandria Drive in Tinley Park, was charged with retail theft after she allegedly tried to take 31 items valued at a total of $356.30 from a store in the 15800 block of 94th Ave. She removed necklaces and earrings from sales packaging, put some on her person and concealed others in a backpack, according the report. She also concealed makeup in her clothing and in the backpack, and left without paying for the items, police said.
