June - No Activities 

Katy ISD Summer Band Camp 

The sixteenth annual summer band camp, offered to next year’s 7 th , 

8 th and 9 th grade KISD band students, will be held at Tompkins High 

School from July 16 th to July 20 th . The camp will include daily section 

rehearsals, full band rehearsals and fun music-based electives. Lunch is 

also part of the camp. The cost of the camp is $130 and will include a 

t-shirt if registered by June 5 th . All registrations after that date will need 

to include a late registration fee of $25 totaling $155. Any registration 

request after June 29 th must be sent via email and if approved, payment 

MUST BE either cash, money order or cashier’s check. 

The camp concludes with the Grand Finale Concert on Friday morning 

at 9 AM. After the concert, those students wishing to extend the fun a 

little longer can join in the group’s optional trip to Typhoon Texas for an 

additional $35 (park admission, meal, bus transportation and drinks are 

included in price) for a total camp cost of $165 ($190 after June 5 th ). The 

KISD JH Summer Band Camp has been a huge success each year and we 

anticipate a large enrollment again this year. 

Camp participants will audition for summer band camp placement as 

soon as they arrive for the first day of camp. Students should prepare 

major scales specific to the student’s instrument and an audition etude 

which can be downloaded from the webpage below. Students will be 

ability grouped with the number of bands being determined by total 

enrollment for the camp. Registration Form, Audition materials and 

Travel/Emergency Treatment Consent Form can be downloaded by 

campers from the Katy ISD Fine Arts Webpage www.katyisd.org/dept/ 

finearts. An email confirmation is sent out upon receipt of registration 

and follow up reminders from the camp coordinator will be sent before 

the camp begins, so make sure your email address is clearly printed on 

the registration form. 

The camp provides an economical and convenient alternative to those 

who may not have had a chance to attend another band camp over the

summer due to scheduling and/or costs. Participants will receive top 

quality instruction on their instruments from our own great KISD and 

Houston area Band Directors. Join us for the sixteenth annual Katy ISD 

Junior High Summer Band Camp and keep your playing skills sharp for 

the year! Camp brochures, with the registration form, will be distributed 

to KISD band students by their schools’ directors. Camp brochures can 

also be downloaded from the Katy ISD Fine Arts webpage above. Plan to 

register early in order to guarantee a spot! Again, registrations requests 

made after June 29 th will need to follow special instructions outlined 

earlier. If you have already registered and have not received your 

confirmation email, contact kisdbandcamp2018@gmail.com to make 

sure your registration has been received. 

Katy ISD Announced New Start 

Times For 2018-19 School Year 

Beginning this fall, Katy Independent School District will transition to a 

multi-bell schedule which will support the new district transportation 

model. The Katy ISD Board of Trustees announced the elementary 

schools that will fall under Group 1 and 2. The 2018-19 multi-bell 

schedule will include four groups that will begin and dismiss at different 

times of the school day. These changes will alleviate the challenges the 

district is facing with bus driver recruitment as well as safety concerns 

with congested traffic in areas within Katy. Elementary campuses will be 

divided in two groups. To verify what group your child’s campus falls

Katy ISD Recognizes 

Nurse Of The Year 

“Save one life and you are a hero. Save one hundred lives and you are a 

nurse.” That is one of the most notorious quotes to describe nurses, the 

dedicated professionals who are critical to the medical field. Katy ISD, 

has 74 exceptionally well-prepared campus nurses and Kim Cromie, from 

Bonnie Holland Elementary has been named the 2017-18 Nurse of the 

Year! 

Nominations for the “Nurse of the Year” recognition were submitted 

earlier this year by colleagues across the district who described why 

a particular nurse was outstanding. The required criteria included 

professionalism, work experience, volunteerism and clinic management 

experience. 

Cromie was brought to tears when she learned she was the final 

candidate for Katy ISD. “Being a school nurse is immensely rewarding 

because not only are you instrumental in keeping students healthy, you 

also provide valuable information to keep the entire campus safe,” said 

Cromie. “It’s very gratifying when I end my day knowing that my work 

protects the Bonnie Holland huskies. Being able to serve our students 

and community in this way is a privilege and a gift,” added Cromie.

The Director of Health Services for Katy ISD, Therese Highnote, stated that 

a school nurse isn’t just about taking temperatures and administering 

bandages. All across the district, campus nurses are in a position to 

promote wellness, prevention and provide access to care for children to 

be healthy. 

In the hospital setting during an emergency situation there is no 

red button to push and a team comes flying in with equipment and 

medications to give. The school nurse stands alone with her knowledge, 

experience and professionalism ready to react when needed. 

Linnea Griffith, the principal of Bonnie Holland Elementary indicated, “It 

is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of this recognition and to show 

Kim how much everyone at Bonnie Holland Elementary appreciates 

everything she does.” In 2017, a collaboration between Nurse Cromie, the 

Bonnie Holland elementary staff and Texas Children’s Hospital resulted 

in the campus being recognized as a “Project Adam Heart Safe School.” 

Besides keeping students healthy, nurse Cromie also mentors other 

nurses in Katy ISD.

Katy United Volleyball 

Did you know Katy has a new developmental volleyball program for 

girls ages 9 to 12 years old? Katy United Volleyball hosts their Starlight 

program where girls learn the FUNdamentals of the sport of volleyball 

while competing against local teams across the city. They have 3 sessions 

(Fall, Winter, Spring) along with summer camps. The team scored a 1 st

Albion Hurricanes FC (AHFC) 

AHFC has multiple campuses in and around Houston . The club invites

Southwest Houston’s own brand new women’s flat track roller derby

the past. We train derby athletes to compete according to the rules and 

guidelines set forth by WFTDA, the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. 

We are actively recruiting skaters, referees and volunteers. Skaters must

JUNE/JULY 2018 HOUSTON AREA EVENTS AND ROAD TRIPS 

June 2 nd - Vegandale is proud to take our utopia on the road, 

hosting Vegandale Food Drink Festival in four cities for 2018. At 

these festivals, veganism is celebrated through food, drinks, music 

and art with hundreds of vendors & 75,000+ guests in attendance.

June 2 nd -This summer, Galveston will host a free, family friendly 

event series to help beachgoers create spectacular sandcastles 

with tips from the pros. Visitors to Stewart Beach can participate in 

“Sandcastle Days” events to receive free sandcastle building lessons 

from a professional sandcastle builder. The events will take place 

each Saturday this summer from June 2 nd thru August 18 th . Each 

event will begin with an instructor building a sandcastle from 8-11 

AM followed by lessons at 11 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM. Equipment will be 

provided on a limited basis and participants are encouraged to bring 

their own sand buckets and shovels. Registration is not required. The 

lessons will take place on the sand near the Stewart Beach Pavilion. 

Stewart Beach is located at 201 Seawall Blvd. It is home to helicopter 

tours, a pavilion, volleyball courts, a children’s playground, 

restrooms, showers, chair and umbrella rentals and concessions.

Standup For Kids 

How would you feel if you saved a kid’s life? StandUp For Kids is an all 

volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless 

kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in 

order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve 

their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from 

abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up 

to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest 

rate of homeless youth in the U.S. StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our 

Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe 

environment for the homeless youth of Houston. If you or your organization

Help For Charities

Preparation For Adult Living 

When foster children reach age 18, they are considered 

independent. That’s difficult for kids who have been wards of 

the state, with necessities arranged by caseworkers with state 

funds. Now they’ll have to figure out how to organize themselves 

and make their money last a whole month. Fortunately, Child 

protective Services offers them a program to help prepare for 

independence: Preparation for Adult Living (PAL). The year-long 

course culminates in an all-day workshop hosted by the National

Council for Jewish Women (NCJW). The course is held at Junior 

Achievement’s BizTown, using computer kiosks sponsored by local

KATY AREA RIDE SERVICE NEEDS YOUR HELP DRIVING OLDER ADULTS 

Katy Area Ride Service (KARS) is looking for your assistance in 

transporting seniors in need of personal (hair salon, bank, classes, 

volunteering, visiting a loved one, taking a pet to the vet) and 

occasional medical rides. Rides are provided in your personal vehicles 

to passengers who are age 65+ and ambulatory (not wheelchair bound, 

may use walking aids). Time commitment is flexible and you choose 

the Katy territory in which you want to drive. Volunteers do not provide 

rides that go east of Barker Cypress, north of Clay Road, west of FM 1463 

or south of Bellaire Blvd at the Grand Parkway. Benefits to Volunteer 

Drivers include the opportunity to help seniors retain independent 

living, dignity and freedom. Drivers tell us the day(s) and times they are 

able to drive. Drivers choose if they wait for the senior or return later 

to pick them up. Drivers must be between 21 years of age and 78 years 

of age with a good driving record, pass a background check and show 

proof of insurance coverage (state minimums) as required by the State

2Nd Annual Katy Color Run Benefits Local Nonprofits 

Rainy, cold temperatures couldn’t keep over 800 local residents from attending the 2 nd annual Katy Color Run on April 7 th . The event benefited five local 

organizations: Christ Clinic, Clothed by Faith, Hope Impacts, Katy Christian Ministries and Compassion Katy. The race got off to a colorful start with a 

chalk filled 5K and was followed by a 1K Kids Dash. Kingsland Baptist Church hosted the event. 

Josh Kuriakose, 17 and Hayden Gold, 14 were the male and female top finishers in the 5K. Kuriakose finished with a time of 17:24 and Gold clocked in 

at 20:28. The winners of the 1K Kids dash were Sam Huntiford, Halle Elliot, Hugo Sims and Somayina Eze. 

Post-race celebrations were cut short by a strong cold front that brought chilly winds to the area but were still enjoyed by many. Festivities included a 

performance by Marshall Camp, food trucks and a vendor fair filled with many local Katy businesses and organizations. 

The benefiting nonprofits provided thousands of people with medical, food, clothing and shelter needs after Hurricane Harvey. Christ Clinic offers 

medical care to uninsured and underinsured patients. Clothed by Faith gives gently used clothing to thousands of Katy area residents in need. 

Compassion Katy connects churches, businesses, and nonprofits to provide solutions meeting community needs. Hope Impacts imparts hope 

to homeless and under-resourced people in the Katy area by linking them to services and resources. Katy Christian Ministries provides food and 

emergency financial assistance to those in need and also offers many other resources to the community including a domestic abuse center and a 

resale store.
