Mentally ill not receiving treatment
I am writing from the not-for-profit
organisation the Mental Illness Fellowship of
Australia.
In particular, I’m wanting readers to be aware
that far too many people who have a serious
mental illness are not getting treatment … and
we need to get that to change.
It is estimated less than 50 per cent of
Australians who have a serious mental illness
get treatment. Obviously this is alarming.
The Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia
urges people who may have mental health issues
to reach out and get the help they need. There is
significant support out there from GPs, clinical
specialists, and most importantly, community
mental health services.
We have a free phone number people can call
from anywhere in Australia to get guidance and
just call 1800 985 944 if you need advice on
where best to go.
Readers can also go to MiNetworks.org.au.
Our latest campaign highlights that 230,000
people in Australia are estimated to have
schizophrenia.
When you include families helping these
people, around one million people are impacted.
It is utterly shameful that the average life
expectancy of someone with schizophrenia in
this country is now just 54 years.
We have to do so much more to support
people with schizophrenia.
People with schizophrenia can and do recover.
We also highlight that it’s time there was
much more government funding for mental
health services in all areas of Australia.
Current mental health services are grossly
inadequate and this needs to change. - Tony
Stevenson, National CEO, Mental Illness
Fellowship of Australia.
Updates from the
Toowoomba Region
Are you being served?
On June 20 it will be time to say goodbye to our
free checkout plastic carry bags.
Thanks to Woollies, Coles and IGA etc, we’ve
been spoiled with these bags over many decades.
Bags cost these retailers around 3 to 4 cents each
and now they sell us bags for dollars.
These new bags won’t break down quickly and
they will take up more landfill space.
Has the Government considered this?
It’s no wonder these supermarket giants are keen
to get rid of the the plastic bags, not only to think of
the environment but to reel in more revenue.
So with the cost of a plastic bag being removed,
will these retailers drop their price on all line items
as they will now have savings in the millions
funded by the consumer?
I doubt it. - Murray Choat, Highfield Ridge.
Tunnel through Toowoomba range not for passenger trains
Those seeking a fast passenger rail service between
Toowoomba and Brisbane, might not be helped by the
rail tunnel through the range to be constructed for the
inland rail project.
It seems that the Australian Rail Track Corporation,
which is constructing the inland rail for the Federal
Government, plans just a single rail line through the
range with waiting loops at the Gowrie Junction end and
the Withcott end of the tunnel.
That would be like having just one traffic lane in each
direction of the Toowoomba second range crossing,
and some believe lacks the vision that is necessary for
a “once in a generation” project such as the inland rail.
But this is an issue for the government to decide on,
rather than the ARTC.
Some thought the tunnel would accommodate two
freight lines for the inland rail, and that the Federal
Government might be convinced to widen the tunnel for
a third line for passenger trains.
ARTC consultation meetings with local communities
between Gowrie and Helidon have been held in recent
days, and information available on the railway alignment
is that just one track will go through the range.
The 6.38km tunnel would begin just to the south-east
of Gowrie Junction and emerge in the Lockyer Valley
north west of Withcott.
Business case for passenger
rail under way
Member for Groom John McVeigh says a detailed
business case is a critical step in the process to construct
a fast passenger rail service between Toowoomba and
Brisbane.
Dr McVeigh said this would help determine the
economic, environmental and social costs and benefits
of potential rail options and the potential to improve
access for communities to services and employment.
The recent Federal Budget included $15 million for
a business case for the passenger rail proposal.
Dr McVeigh said the funding was provided under
the Federal Government’s $250 million Major
Project Business Fund, an initiative that supports the
overnment’s 10-year infrastructure investment strategy.
“This is something that we have dreamed about in
this region for decades. Passenger rail services from
Toowoomba to Brisbane would literally change the
future of the entire Toowoomba region,” Dr McVeigh
said.
Dr McVeigh said people living in the region currently
had limited transport options and that passenger rail
would have far reaching benefits.
“Passenger rail would benefit Toowoomba and the
wider Lockyer Valley area with increased access for
jobs, tourism, health care and housing,” Dr McVeigh
said.
“It would also give further impetus to the
development of the Wellcamp Airport as an alternative
for the growth corridor west of Brisbane, as well
as lead to a further tourism boost for Toowoomba to
become the mountain retreat of Brisbane, akin to the
Blue Mountains of Sydney.”
The business case will investigate a range of route
options, including but not limited to:
• Upgrades to the existing rail line to enable regular
commuter passenger rail services and integrating
passenger services in freight corridors,
• Route staging and timing of construction, and
• Type of rolling stock.
“Toowoomba is a city on the move. It is an exciting
time to be part of our growing community and see
the many opportunities arise from big investments to
infrastructure improvements in the region currently
underway,” Dr McVeigh said.
The tunnel will pass under the second range crossing
at Boundary Street, Bedford Street, and the New
England Highway, and there would be an overpass
for the inland rail over the second range crossing near
Postmans Ridge.
The inland rail line between Gowrie and Helidon,
including the tunnel, would have a steady gradient of
1.5 per cent, allowing loaded trains to travel through the
range at 27km/hr.
An ARTC spokesman said trains should travel the
range section in about one hour, whereas trains on the
existing range line take three hours to climb or descend
the range.
The tunnel will be high enough, about 7.1 metres or
23.3 feet, to accommodate trains with double stacked
containers. Modern containers are nine-feet-six-inches
high.
The tunnel will pass about 220 metres below the New
England Highway near Mt Kynoch.
ARTC community consultation sessions are
providing people with information on alignment,
flooding, noise, vibration and air quality, level crossings,
the environmental impact statement process, and social
impact assessment. - Miles Noller reporting.
Member for Groom John McVeigh and Toowoomba Regional Mayor Paul Antonio at the Toowoomba
Railway Station were among a group which met at the railway station to consider the potential for a fast
passenger rail service between Toowoomba and Brisbane.
At a consultation at Gowrie Junction George McKnight whose property at Birnam between Gowrie
and Highfields will overlook the tunnel entrance, and Mercedes Staff, ARTC Queensland manager of
stakeholder engagement. The image they were viewing shows the inland rail route in orange, and its
interaction with the second range crossing in yellow.
DAVID HACK CLASSIC PICTORIAL
Toowoomba people saw one of the rarest cars in the
world at the recent David Hack Classic, at Toowoomba
Airport.
They would have seen a pink car, a 1913 Rolls
Royce, thinking “that’s a nice old car.” And it was. It
was judged the best veteran vehicle at the event.
But it is one of only three in the world. Owner
Paul Creighton of Southport said the other two are in
museums.
Mr Creighton said it was difficult to value such a
vehicle. So should you think it’s worth a million dollars
or two, you’d probably be near the money.
Yet he drove it on the highway from Southport to
Toowoomba, and back again.
He said it cruises at the speed limit. It has a six
cylinder engine of 7.6 litre capacity, and a three speed
crash gearbox. There’s no starter motor, you have to
crank it by hand.
It is known as the L2E model Rolls Royce. That
stands for London to Edinburgh, and was built to
compete with the Napier car, then one of the best cars
in the world.
Best veteran in the million dollar range
After the Rolls bettered the Napier for speed and
fuel economy, the Royal Automobile Club of the
UK referred to it as the best car in the world and the
description generally has applied to Rolls Royce since.
The car was also tested at the Brooklands race track
in southern England where it reached the speed of 101
miles hour.
Mr Creighton obtained his car 25 years ago from
Carcoar between Bathurst and Cowra in NSW. It had
belonged to a Mrs Whitney who had two 1913 Rolls
Royce cars. The other was a “Colonial” model that was
made for the more robust conditions in Australia and
India.
Mrs Whitney used the cars to travel from NSW to a
property she had in Queensland.
The colour of the car is not pink. It is not lavender,
not mulberry, not mauve, not fuschia. Mr Creighton
said it is black cherry and is as near as possible to the
original colour.
The interior is plum. He said that in the sunshine,
the paintwork is “almost” pink, but in the shade it is
black cherry.
Justine Fraser, Toowoomba,
in hot pink, Robyn Weaver,
Sunshine Coast, wearing
fuschia, and Anna Carson,
Toowoomba, wearing pink, were
unable to name the colour of the
Rolls Royce.
Leo and Camilla Ryan of Cotswold Hills with the 1950 DeSoto they acquired in 2002. It reminded Mr
Ryan of a 1950 Dodge his parents bought new. The DeSoto is slightly flashier than the Dodge and
Plymouth versions with more chrome and nickel.
Business Happenings
How the centre of Highfields grows
over the next 10 – 20 years will have
a major impact of the liveability of our
community.
HDBC has been pushing strongly to have a mixed use town
centre precinct which is aligned to the Highfields values and
supports business and community growth. Our months of
consultation and engagement with our community, business,
local, state and federal governments has resulted in the creation
of our unique proposal for Highfields.
We have named it the Highfields Lifestyle Enterprise
Precinct. It is a vision for attracting businesses and promoting
the good growth that Highfields needs. At our next breakfast,
Robert Prestipino from Vital Places will be presenting the draft
version of the Highfields Lifestyle Enterprise Precinct for our
members to review and ask questions.
This is a critically important event if you are interested in the
future of the town centre of Highfields and the opportunities
for your business.
Our April breakfast was a great presentation from Alex
Taylor from Entire Tax and Accounting on preparing for the
end of the financial year. There were some terrific pointers
on some simple things that will save your business time and
money. We thank Alex for his timely advice.
As always, for any questions about HDBC, please email
secretary@hdbc.org.au, see our Facebook page or our website
www.hdbc.org.au or you can call me on 0438 731 951. The
June breakfast will be held at the Highfields Cultural Centre
next Tuesday, June 6.
Regards,
Jim O’Dea, President.
Peter Manning, Gold Coast, was at the David Hack Classic with
his red Vauxhall Vagabond, which also took the fancy of Vanessa,
Toowoomba. The two-door convertible versions of the Vauxhall
Velox were made in Melbourne at the Fisherman’s Bend plant of
Holdens/General Motors. This is a 1954 model and one of only 1150
Vagabonds made.
DAVID HACK CLASSIC PICTORIAL Photos by Miles Noller
David Hack, 1970 - 1998 was a young man
with a passion for classic cars and photography.
He contracted Leukaemia. A 28th birthday bash
was organised for him at the Aerotec hangar at
Toowoomba Airport but he died two days before
the event.
The Rotary Club of Toowoomba North has been
holding the David Hack Classic as an annual event,
and on the weekend celebrated the 20th Classic.
On show were 462 classic and vintage cars and
scores of aircraft.
This 1913 Rolls Royce was driven to the David Hack Classic from Southport by owner Paul Creighton.
With him in the driver’s seat is Anna Carson, Toowoomba, the mother of the late David Hack.
The Rotary Club of Toowoomba North has successfully organised and conducted the 20th David Hack
Classic. The event was described as a bumper. On show at Toowoomba Airport were 462 classic and
vintage cars, 13 motor bikes, and dozens of aircraft. More than 4500 people attended. With a celebration
cake to mark the occasion, are Lynette Zuccoli, who donates the use of her aircraft hanger, Chris Seydel
HIGH COUNTRY HERALD - MAY 29, 2018 - 5

Sweet and loving dog and a well organised cat
Have you always thought
about getting a cat but worried
they may mess with
your need for an organised
and tidy home? Well meet Cynthia,
our resident cat who is the Queen of
Organisation!
Cynthia is loving and affectionate,
but she likes everything to be in its
right and proper place, so no need to
worry about her leaving her dishes on
the side or making a mess in the bathroom
department.
She is very set in her routine and
needs stability in her new home with
no unwanted surprises, so would be a
perfect companion for someone who
understands her need for order.
Unfortunately, she does not get on
with other cats, as they are just too untidy
for her, so she needs to be the only
feline at home and children have those
sticky little fingers that leave handprints
on everything, so she would be
much happier in an adult only home.
Sprocket is a sweet and loving dog
who enjoys pats and being with people.
He is a little reserved with new people
but warms up quickly and would
make a loving and loyal companion.
He would be happier in an adult
home and prefers the quiet life.
He also doesn’t like to be left alone
so he will need plenty of enrichment
when you are away and also to be included
in all family activities.
He may be happy living with a
calmer, social dog but he will need to
meet them first.
Sprocket is desexed, microchipped,
vaccinated, wormed and flea treated.
You may have noticed that there are some new faces in store at the Highfields Village Shopping Centre. In
April, store owner Ainsley Hardie decided to merge her two stores My Personal Travel Planner and italktravel
Highfields into the one location here in Highfields. Joining Ainsley and Store Manager Kylie in store are
fellow senior consultants Vicki Holberton and Karen Johnson. The entire team look forward to continuing to
help the residents of Highfields in fulfilling their travel aspirations. We believe that every holiday starts with
a conversation, so that holiday begins the moment that you step through our door.
‘As travellers ourselves, we use our knowledge to encourage people
to do more, see more and get more from their travels.’
Over the coming months we look forward to sharing our travel experiences
with you. So far this year our team has visited Argentina, Antarctica, New Zealand,
Singapore, Malaysia, Canada and the US whilst also squeezing in trips
to New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. Starting next week will be the
first edition of store Ainsley’s journey to Antarctica earlier this year. This completes
a life long travel goal of traveling to both the Arctic and the Antarctic.
Students take time out for a story
Highfields State School took part in the annual
National Simultaneous Storytime on Wednesday, May
23.
Each year a book written and illustrated by
Australians is chosen and read to children all around
the country at exactly same time.
The main goal of this event is to promote the
importance of reading and literacy and doing it in a
fun and unique way.
Highfields State School’s focus this year is to
improve students’ reading through quality teaching
and this event tied in with that perfectly.
The school is also participating in the Premiers
Our biggest CRT FarmFest ever!
This year we reach
a major milestone in
agri-marketing…
the biggest ever CRT
FarmFest in our 41 year
history!
Despite dry conditions in parts of
Queensland and other states, optimism
is strong in the rural sector. As
our record exhibitor numbers continue
to grow well past 2000, CRT FarmFest
maintains its p lace as the biggest and
most successful annual agricultural
event in the Sunshine State.
Once again, more than 60,000 visitors
are expected through the gates
and we have a number of exciting
innovations awaiting our loyal customers.
Demonstrations at CRT FarmFest
continue an upward trend so we are
delighted to introduce a new Demonstration
Machinery Area sponsored by
New Holland.
This opens up more opportunities for
larger machinery demonstrations in
the field and adds to our already popular
ATV and motorbike, livestock area
and on-stand demonstrations.
Our Livestock Area this year will be
a buzz with the Led Steer and Heifer
competitions, Young Handlers and
Young Judges competitions, Battle of
the Bulls and Fantastic Females competitions,
breed showcases and Grand
Parade.
With new exciting edition to the area
- the ARTC sponsored Glendon Kelpies
Working Demonstrations, along
with the popular Australian Heavy
Horse display. More sites have been
added to our static display to meet the
ever-increasing need from new exhibitors.
A hallmark of CRT FarmFest is the
focus on innovation, new technology
and precision farming products and
services on display from our growing
list of exhibitors.
FarmFest organisers, Fairfax Rural
Events, Group Manager Kate Nugent
believes visitors to this year’s event
will be especially focused on how they
can continue to develop and improve
efficient farming practices and will be
on the lookout for products and services
that can meet these needs.
“The sheer size, product/service
range, diversity and national positioning
of CRT FarmFest offers unmatched
marketing opportunities providing
primary industry in Queensland
with an unparalleled opportunity to increase
its already high efficiency,” Ms
Nugent said.
In keeping with Fairfax Rural Events’
policy of making a visit to the event as
enjoyable and convenient as possible,
Honda branded ticketing booths will be
located in the major car parks, which
allows visitors to avoid queues at the
entry gates by pre-purchasing tickets
when the car parking gates open at
7.30am and free CRT FarmFest Official
Guides, published by Queensland
Country Life, will also be available at
the booths.
CRT FarmFest 2018 runs Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday, June 5, 6
and 7 at Kingsthorpe, 20km west of
Toowoomba off the Warrego Highway,
9am to 5pm Tuesday and Wednesday,
9am to 4pm Thursday.Car park opens
at 7.30am.
CROWS NEST
12 - HIGH COUNTRY HERALD - MAY 29, 2018
times the number of
avocados than what they
buy.
Dr Jenny Ekman, an
applied horticultural
re-searcher from
Sydney University, is a
specialist in post harvest
management of fruit.
She told the Crows Nest
seminar that the aim of
research is to reduce fruit
damage by 10 per cent in
three years.
This is one of three
projects on reducing
damage to fruit from the
farm to retail.
Dr Ekman and others
admitted that it is difficult
to stop consumers squeezing
Ṙesearch in supermarkets
has shown that
some people will squeeze
more than 10 avocados to
buy one.
This can damage the
fruit, and one in five
avocados in retail stores
do not meet consumers
expectations.
The avocado industry
is working on technology
to take handling out of the
hands of the consumer,
and a decision aid too
is being looked at, with
devices being considered
for stores.
Avocados Australia
is also working with
supermarkets to segregate
avocados with various
stages of ripeness.
These sorted displays
can also increase sales of
avocados, and one Sydney
store increased sales by
900 per cent because it
had ripe fruit on display.
Training of shop staff
is also underway, with a
certificate for those who
do the training not only
on avocado ripeness, but
also best practice in retail,
customers, and ordering,
receival and storage of
avocados.
The seminar was told
how bruising reduces
quality, and increases
discolouration and rot.
Methods of picking
and handling of fruit in
the packing shed were
also considered, as was
the need to improve the
robustness of fruit.
This could be improved
if harvest occurs only
when dry matter is above
23 per cent.
Robustness also
depends on trees receiving
adequate water, and the
selection of cultivars
and rootstock also was
involved.
IMPORTS ON THE
HORIZON
Avocados Australia
CEO John Tyas told the
seminar that a number
of countries were
considering exporting
avocados to Australia.
Mr Tyas said New
Zealand avocados had
an important role in
Australia, being available
at certain times of the year
when Australia production
was low or non existent.
- Miles Noller reporting.
However, Mexico
was seeking to send
avocados to Australia
and Biosecurity was
considering their application.
Mexico is air freighting
avocados to some Asian
countries now.
Currently this freight
from Mexico to Australia
would be via Los Angeles,
but the opening of more
direct routes might reduce
freight rates.
Mr Tyas said a potential
scenario was that Mexico
might supply niche
markets in the high prices
summer months, and could
replace New Zealand’s
supply of avocados.
He said changes to
exchange rates, and
changes to freight rates
could make it easier
for Mexican fruit to be
exported to Australia.
Peru and Chile were
also looking to export to
Australia.
Mr Tyas said Australia
will need to look at
exports to Asia.
Western Australia has
secured some access to
Japan, but work is required
because of Japan’s strict
quarantine.
Sales can be increased
in USA, Singapore and
Malaysia, and while ripe
fruit is a risk to export,
Australia needs to review
opportunities to supply
“ripe and ready Australian
Avocados.”
“Freshness and quality
set us apart in export
markets,” he said.
Oakey museum open day
Murphys Creek markets distribute profits
This slab hut is one of an expanding
list of buildings at the Oakey Historical
Museum, where there will be an open
day on Saturday, June 9, from 10am to
4pm.
This hut was built about 1850 and
rebuilt in 2000 by inmates of the Darling
Downs Correctional Centre.
Renovated doors to be opened at the
Oakey Museum
The Oakey Historical Museum is
benefiting from work being done by a
former house renovator Denis Bennett,
and on June 9, there will be an open day
to show-off the improvements.
Mr Bennett worked as a house
renovator in Dalby for 20 years and says
he has another three buildings at the
Oakey Museum to restore, and he also
has plans to set up a dairy, a shearing
shed, and a railway station.
The Oakey Museum is adjacent to a
railway line between the town and the
Oakey Export Beef works, and he thinks
a railway station would be an appropriate
part of the history of the district.
Included in the historical precinct will
be a former Oakey RSL building from
the town’s main street.
Oakey Museum pioneer slab hut.
Although the exterior is yet to receive
the renovators touch, the interior is ready
for the open day, from 10am to 4pm on
Saturday June 9.
This is also Queensland Day and there
is to be a flag raising ceremony in the
presence of Mayor Paul Antonio and
other dignitaries.
Oakey Beef Exports next door has
provided $200 of meat. And $150 of the
meat is to be raffled, and $50 worth of it
will be the gate prize. The draw is at 3pm.
On display will be camera equipment,
historical machines and tools, tons of
equipment, and photos depicting the
history of the Oakey region.
In the precinct are the historic Byers
Cottage, the former Oakey morgue, the
fully restored Pioneer Cottage (slab hut),
and other buildings and displays, many
featuring quirky and interesting objects
not seen in decades.
The open day will include a morning
tea and afternoon tea and a sausage
sizzle provided by the Oakey Historical
Society members. Entry is by a gold coin
donation. The Oakey Historical Society
Museum is located on the corner of
Bridge and Ramsay Streets.
The Murphys Creek Markets committee made their annual presentation
of donations to local organisations at the May market day. Presentations
were made to Murphys Creek Rural Fire Brigade, $1000
in Bunnings vouchers, LifeFlight $1500, and the RSPCA dog section,
$1000. ABOVE: Marion Smith, LifeFlight, Jill and David Blackmore,
Murphys Creek Rural Fire Brigade, Suzette Robinson, Murphys
Creek Markets president, Len McKewin, markets committee, and
Cassie Elles, RSPCA. The donations come from funds raised through
market stall site fees, market day barbecue and raffles. The markets
are held on the third Saturday of each month.
Condamine Alliance and South West NRM welcome
the announcement that they will be forming
a new regional organisation in the Southern Region
of Queensland to support community-based
natural resource management.
After several months of discussions and consultation
with community members and organisations,
it was clear there was strong support for the
establishment of a new regional NRM organisation.
The new organisation, Southern Queensland
NRM, would operate across Southern Queensland
from Toowoomba to Quilpie in the north and
south to cover the Granite Belt, Border ivers and
St George flood plains.
The new organisation will focus on supporting
community members in achieving on-ground natural
resource management. This is the formation
of a new entity with a strong community-based approach.
At the appropriate time, both Condamine
Alliance and South West NRM will cease operations
and move all operating arrangements to the
new entity.
An open invitation is extended to all interested
persons in the Southern Queensland region to become
members of the new organisation.
You are encouraged to call 07 4620 0111 or
email membersqnrm@gmail.com to register
your interest. This is an exciting time and with
the support of the community great things can be
achieved by us all in the field of natural resource
management. - SWNRM Chair Mark O’Brien
Rotary Bowelscan
Each year from May 1 to June 28 the Rotary
Club of Toowoomba North distributes hundreds
of Bowelscan kits across Toowoomba, Highfields,
Kingsthorpe, Oakey, Pittsworth and Millmerran in
their annual Bowelscan program.
The Bowelscan kits can be bought at local pharmacies
for $15 which includes the test kit and pathology.
This is a great deal and everyone over
40 should buy a kit. Bowel cancer is 90 per cent
curable if detected early.
Rotary Club of Toowoomba North distribute the
Bowelscan kits as a community service only and
the only gain for Rotary is knowing how many
lives this program saves each year.
Each year the 400 kits sold in this region alone
discovers 100 or so possible positive results for
bowel cancer. It has even saved the life of one of
their own members.
If your local pharmacy is not participating in the
program, contact Toowoomba North’s president,
Robyn Jeffery 0414 965 870.
