Sowing method: 2-3 seeds per plug
Germination:
Stage I and II: 14-21 days at 68-72 °F (20-22 °C)
Stage III and IV: 21 days 64-68 °F (18-20 °C)
Requires light for germination.
Temperature: Grow at 61-64 °F (16-18 °C)
Media: Use a well-drained, growing media with 1-1,5 kg/m³
complete balanced fertilizer, pH 5.5-6.0
Sowing media: Media with very low soluble salt levels and
pH 5.5-6.0; keep soil slightly moist but not wet.
Plug Culture: From Stage II gradually lower humidity levels and
maintain uniform soil moisture levels. Do not let soluble salt level
rise above 0,75 EC. Start fertilization at 50-75 ppm nitrogen in a
well balanced formula. During Stage III and Stage IV fertilization
levels can be increased up to 100-150 ppm.
Growing on: 5-6 weeks after sowing, transplant 1 plant into a
pot 4-4,5’’ (10,5-12 cm).
Fertilization: Moderate – high fertilization levels are required.
Fertilize the crop weekly with 200 -250 ppm nitrogen, using a
complete balanced fertilizer. Avoid high ammonium and high
nitrogen levels. Avoid pH above 6.0, as high pH causes iron
deficiency. Apply chelated iron, if chlorosis becomes a problem.
To prevent magnesium deficiency apply magnesium sulphate
(0,025 %) 1-2 times.
Crop Time: Plug crop: 4-6 weeks; flowering pots: 10-12 weeks
Cultural Hints: Avoid high salt levels in media especially in the
early plug stages. Salvia farinacea are susceptible to leaf scorch
if soluble salts rise or pH drops.
