Germination: Stage 1 (5-10 days)
Cover: Do not cover seed as light is required for germination.
Light: Begonias require no additional supplemental light for
germination.
Temperature: Maintain temperatures of 75-80 °F (24-26 °C).
Relative humidity levels: Levels of 95 % or higher are optimal.
If using pelleted seed, 100 % relative humidity will aid in the
uniformity of germination.
Media: pH: Maintain media pH of 5.5-6.5 and EC levels of 0.75.
Plug Culture:
Stage 2 (10-14 days): Gradually lower temperature to 70-72 °F
(21-22 °C). Maintain uniform soil moisture. Do not allow young
seedlings to dry out. Begin fertilization at 50-100 ppm nitrate
nitrogen.
Stage 3 (21-28 days): Gradually lower temperatures to 65-70 °F
(18-21 °C). Apply a calcium based feed at 100 ppm nitrogen on
a weekly basis.
Stage 4 (7 days): Lower temperatures to 62-65 °F (16-18 °C).
Apply a calcium/potassium nitrate feed at 100-150 ppm nitrogen.
Growing on: Transplant plugs after 6-8 weeks.
Grow on at 62-68 °F (16-20 °C). Fertilize every second irrigation at
150 ppm nitrogen. Maintain EC levels of 1.25-1.5. Excessive salt
buildups can cause root damage.
Crop time: 288 Plugs: 6-8 weeks
Packs: 12-14 weeks
Flowering 4" (10 cm) pots: 13-15 weeks
Culture hints: Monitor for fungus gnats and shore flies. During
cool dark periods, watch for signs of Botrytis and Phytophthora.
If temperatures rise, treatments of B-Nine or Cycocel are effective
growth regulators.
