The French poet and critic Apollinaire defined cubism in 1911, as a trend interested in “new measure of space, which in the language of the modern studios are designated by the term, fourth dimension”. He used the term fourth dimension with an abstract meaning. For Apollinaire, the 4th dimension is the moving blink that “endows objects with plasticity” in a 4-dimensional way. The overall result is deformation rather than purity.
