Pastor’s Message 

Pastor Katie Lowe Lancaster 

Greetings Sisters and Brothers in Christ, 

This is the time of year when the ending days of summer intertwine with the beginning days of 

fall. This year however the seasons appear to be confused as fields have turned brown long 

before their time and the temperatures seem to dip down more than the typical expectations 

of hot August nights. History will record the summer of 2012 as a summer of drought. As we 

look back somehow all of us have been touched by the lack rain and the longing for the 

renewal of the fields of grains and grasses. Interesting that only a few years ago our headline in 

the news focused the floods and the abundance of the rains and the every lasting witness to 

the power of racing water. I visited a member of our congregation in recent weeks and he 

shared with me the challenges of farming in the 1930’s. The nation was in crisis and the fields 

went dry. He said that they had planted seed in ground in April only to never see a drop of rain 

until July 4. On that day the seed germinated and sprouted all in one big surge only it was too 

late and the harvests were lost. I asked him how he survived those difficult times. He said ever 

so calmly and with a smile, it’s all part of the journey and you don’t get to know how it all is 

going to turn out until you have the chance to look back. 

I am mindful that we have an opportunity to name the possible feelings of anxiety as we face a whole host of challenges that 

are different for each family. Maybe it is the challenge of a new job or seeking to find employment, maybe it is a serious health 

concern, maybe it is going back to school and wondering about classes, sports and friendships, maybe there is tension in your 

home or work or maybe it is wondering about the unknown, and that wonder instead of exciting you, keeps you awake at 

night. 

I find great comfort in several passages that I want to share with you about surrendering our anxiety, surrendering our fear of 

change as well as the unknown while embracing God’s profound love. 

When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, LORD, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your 

consolation brought me joy.” Psalm 94:18-19 NIV 

4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say, Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be known to every person. The Lord is at hand. 6 

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be 

made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds 

in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7 

These passages were written to give peace to the listener in those days but just as importantly to give peace to the listeners 

today; you and me. 

It is a huge request to say, “Do not be anxious about anything…” but the statement does not stand alone it is attached to the 

message of hope – “but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” 

and the then closes with the promise… “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and 

minds in Christ Jesus.” 

The passage of hope was written by Paul who was in prison at the time…and he says there is peace that goes beyond our 

understanding but we are confident that this profound peace comes from the love of God. Well PRAISE GOD – we are not 

alone and the Lord God is with you and me all our days! 

Each of us experience joy, encouragement, anxiety, change, fear, or challenges that seem overwhelming. But we believe that 

God is good indeed! Together may we all take in a huge sigh and give our thanks to the One who created us, loves us and 

forgives us all beyond our understanding!

Choir practice will begin on Wednesday, September 

5th at 7pm at the church. Anyone interested in 

joining the choir is welcome and encouraged to join 

us! 

St. Paul Bell Ringers 

A few duties include: Taking care of 

the family care room; (wipe off crib & 

little table, pick up and straighten 

room) over-see kitchen (*Launder 

towels on counter, check & clean 

refrigerators & stoves when needed) 

keep supplies stocked (paper towels, 

dish soap in kitchen, kleenex for the 

bathroom, plastic wrap & baggies 

etc.). *It is very important that Work 

Groups select someone to check on 

the kitchen. 

It's time to get our bells ringing again! This year there will be 

only one bell choir. It will be comprised of students in grades 

2-4. Rehearsal time will be every Tuesday at 5:30 in the church 

basement. Rehearsal time will be approximately 30 minutes. 

Our first rehearsal will be Tuesday, September 18. The St. Paul 

Ringers will be sharing their music on the first Sunday of each 

month at the end of the 8:00 service and on the third Sunday 

of each month at the beginning of the 10:30 service. It's 

important for students to attend rehearsals, as well as 

attending the church service in which we are playing. In case 

of an absence, please contact Nancy Stout so the necessary 

arrangements can be made to cover 

the missing musician. If you have

Being Part of the Church

A Few Good Items 

As I age, I tend to grow more sentimental. Many of you, my fellow Christians, can probably relate! 

We are in need of a few 

good items to complete 

some renovations to the 

CE Building. If you would like 

to find out more of what is 

needed please contact 

Pastor Katie and she will 

take you on a tour and 

together we can come up 

with some more visions and 

dreams for updating of the 

building. 

My parents brought me to the baptismal font when I was a baby, and took to heart the promises they made. I was 

given a Bible, attended Sunday School, studied the Ten Commandments, The Lord’s Prayer, The Creed, and 

eventually, Luther’s Small Catechism. My family and most of the people in our circle of acquaintances were part of 

my Christian Education, along with Pastors, Sunday School teachers, Church Council members, the choir director, 

Miss Kruse, who taught the nursery classes but still knew our names when we were in high school, and the organist 

who shared her love of God’s music with us. 

Being part of the Church hasn’t always been easy, not all smooth sailing, but what a blessing to be in relationship 

with Jesus Christ and his followers. Worshiping together, studying, praying, sharing the sacraments, and serving 

together, lifting each other up in all that we do and say…these things are being the 

Church. 

Now when I look back at over 70 years spent in many congregations, I thank God for 

all of those Christian people who have been my guides on this journey, from those 

who gave me a good start to those who are in fellowship together at St. Paul today. 

May we all rejoice at being part of the Church.

Christian Education News 

Where has the summer gone? It seems like just yesterday we were honoring our Sunday 

School teachers for the awesome job they did last year and now the time is already upon us to 

organize this years line up! 

I would like to personally invite each and every one of you to take some time and pray for our 

Christian Education Team. We are about to embark on some new and exciting changes this 

fall! In addition to our Sunday morning ministry, we will also be expanding our Wednesday 

evening youth ministry as well! 

With our new middle school opening within the next few days, this has opened up some 

discussion with several ministry teams as to where these youth best fit in. We felt that in 

order to stay with the community they will already be involved in at school, it is best that they 

would feel more comfortable in this similar type of environment at church. With that said, 

coming this Fall, Club 56 (5 th and 6 th graders), Club 78 (7 th and 8 th graders), and a High School 

program will all meet on Wednesday evenings!!! 

Again, there are always going to be bumps in the road to get a new program up and running, 

so please bear with us as we embark on this new and exciting adventure at St. Paul. 

Due to these new changes, we are going to be pushing the start of Sunday School back by one 

week in order to give us more time to prepare to kick this off to hopefully a successful start. 

Rally Day is going to take on a new look this year. We would like to 

have ALL parents and youth to take part in a Rally Day on Sunday, 

September 16 th at 9:15 in the Christian Ed building. This will be an 

important day to find out about the new changes and what to expect 

for this upcoming year. 

Sunday School for grades pre-kindergarten (3 and 4 year olds) through 

4 th grade will begin on Sunday, September 23 rd at 9:15 in the Christian 

Education building. 

Again, we ask for your patience as we transition into this awesome adventure to fulfill our 

youths’ spiritual needs and lead them along their journey with God! If you have any concerns,

I would like to take this opportunity to make one more request. When 

our youth experienced the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, we all as a 

congregation promised: 

• To live with them among God’s faithful people, 

• To bring them to the Word of God and the Lord’s Supper, 

• To teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, 

• To place in their hands the Holy Scriptures, 

• To nurture them in faith and prayer, so that they may learn to trust God, 

proclaim Christ in word and deed, care for others and the world God made, and 

work for justice and peace. 

I am asking each of you to prayerfully consider if God is calling you in any way to join our new 

journey, whether it be a small group leader on Wednesday evenings, helping with a servant 

project, teaching a 4 week rotation class, helping with a Christmas event, or any other job yet 

to be determined. At St. Paul, God is speaking through each of us to assist in bringing our 

youth to a deeper appreciation of our Triune God and we can’t do it alone, we need your help! 

If you feel God tugging at your heart, nudging you to step out of your comfort zone or maybe 

it is your comfort zone, I would LOVE to talk to you. Again, please call me at (319) 480-5528 or

Blessing Of Backpacks– September 9 At Both Sunday Morning Worship Services 

We want to pray for the opportunity to learn, grow and the safety of our 

children and youth that have returned to school. All children, preschool

Discipleship for students entering 5th grade through 12th grade called:

Each Wednesday there will be large group teaching, small group relationship 

building, worship and every month an Extension Night including a servant 

project.

RAGBRAI 

We wish to extend our deepest appreciation to everyone who 

assisted with the RAGBRAI dinner. More than 60 people dedicated 

countless hours to the preparation and serving of the meal. In 

addition, we thank the many individuals who provided grocery 

items, financial support, and most importantly, prayerful support. 

For those of you who provided rhubarb from your garden, we 

want you to know the riders truly savored those delicious pies! A 

special thank you is extended to our pianist, Sylvia Albers, for 

providing hours of wonderful musical entertainment for our 

guests. We thank Pastor Bill, Pastor Katie, and the youth for 

welcoming our guests and providing bottled water to each of the 

riders. The riders were very appreciative of our efforts. We 

received many compliments on the quality of food, cleanliness, 

and friendliness. Not only did we provide food and a welcoming 

environment to the riders, we were able to feed thousands of 

hungry people in our world through our proceeds. Hats off to our 

St. Paul family! Thank you for your generous, loving support.

ALY (Anamosa Lunch for Youth) News 


Can you believe school has started already? And 

that means the ALY summer sack lunch program 

is over, and it’s time for the Weekend Backpack 

program to get started. As soon as the 

counselors give us the green light, we’ll be 

packing and delivering those bags of food for the 

Anamosa School District students who need that 

extra support each week. 

St. Paul is first up in the rotation, so we need to 

be ready early in September. Sign-up sheets are 

posted on the bulletin board in the church entry. 

Please be sure to include your phone number so 

we can organize the volunteer groups. 

Recently, St. Paul member, Emily Christensen, 

contributed over $400 she raised in a 4H project, 

and she continues to work as a volunteer for ALY. 

The Morley Methodist youth gave $168 through 

a special offering collected at a recent worship 

service. A freezer was donated by Jan Swanson, 

and will be available to other groups at the LCC 

when ALY is not using it for food storage. Other 

recent grants and gifts have assured that we can 

continue to serve our children in need. 

The ALY Volunteer Board welcomed new 

member, Wilma Anderson of St. Paul 

congregation, at the August meeting. 

Watch for details about the 2013 Love In A 

Backpack Concert, ALY’s annual fundraiser, to be 

held October 21. As always, the concert will bring 

together local musicians and friends of the ALY 

program, praising the Lord and passing the 

donation backpacks. 

And finally, thanks again to all who volunteer, 

donate and advocate for the ALY programs.

August Council Clips 

Opening devotions and prayer was given by Pastor Bill on 

“spiritual homes” a reading from 1 Peter. 

Pastor Katie shared her experience at the Willow Creek 

Leadership Conference. She, along with her husband John, 

and Darel & Laura Secrist attended the remote location at 

Hope Lutheran Church in Des Moines. Pastor Katie was 

excited to use what she learned with St. Paul members. 

Rhonda Michels shared that 5 St. Paul women will be 

attending the Women of Faith Conference in the coming 

weekend. 

Pastor Katie made a motion to add to membership roles 

Anna Lou Minnie who was baptized at St. Paul on August 5, 

2012. Was seconded and approved. 

RAGBRAI Dinner: Discussion on RAGBRAI followed an 

amended motion to have half of the profit from RAGBRAI go 

to Improvements of the Christian Education Building and the 

other half be split evenly between local hunger and world 

hunger efforts. Seconded and approved. 

The newly formed/redesigned work groups are complete. 

Group leaders are presently handing out the information to 

their respective work group members. 

Council Liaisons for congregational committees are: Worship 

Committee– Denny Christenson, Christian Education– Doug 

Fairbanks, Evangelism/Outreach– None, Social Concerns– 

Mike Plueger, Stewardship/Finance– Doug Fairbanks, and

We continue to collect supplies 

for school kits. Please bring any of 

the items to the church kitchen. 

Many stores have school supplies 

on sale right now. 

The needed items are: 

♦ 4 70 sheet notebooks (wide or 

college ruled) 

♦ 1 30 cm ruler (12”) 

♦ 1 pencil sharpener 

♦ 1 blunt scissors 

♦ 5 unsharpened pencils 

♦ 5 ballpoint pens (no gel ink) 

♦ 1 box 16 or 24 count crayons 

July, August, & September are 

designated for school kits for our 

World Relief Project. We currently 

have a large supply of school bags 

already sewn. Monetary 

donations to purchase school 

supplies are always welcome, and 

can be placed in the collection 

plate at church clearly marked 

“school kits”. Thank you! 

Lutheran World Relief Notes 


Quilters will be busy creating quilts and tying knots for the next 6 weeks, 

getting ready for the Fall pickup. Fabric is available for anyone who wants 

to sew at home. Those who want to be tied up in knots are invited to 

spend Monday afternoons from 1:00 to 4:00 in the church basement 

fellowship area, beginning Monday, September 10. Contact Virginia 

Danielson at 462-4625 with any questions. 

Kits and quilts will be on their way to the Fall pick-up in Cedar Rapids in 

mid-October. Many thanks to all who have donated kit items, quilt tops, 

fabric, and dollars for these projects. Kit project leaders, Cheri Francik, 

Joan Decious, Nancy Hart, and Karen Biere will need volunteers to help 

assemble and pack these donations. 

Through the gifts from participating congregations, LWR distributes more 

than $12 Million worth of quilts and kits annually. St. Paul’s Women of the 

ELCA members have donated toward shipping fees for many years. If you 

wish to help defray the ever-rising cost to ship, please feel free to put 

your donation, clearing marked “LWR Shipping Fund,” in the weekend 

offering plates, or mail it to the church office. Your donation will be 

forwarded on to Lutheran World Relief.

grandson of Erv & Dixie Rickels who has 

finished basic training and after graduating 

high school will be entering the National 

Guard Army. Congratulations Luther!

you shop for groceries again this month. Items that are always in 

demand are non-perishable food items (such as canned goods, pasta, 

rice, etc.), paper products (such as toilet paper and paper towels), 

baby diapers, and personal care items (such as soap, toothpaste, 

toothbrushes). Monetary donations are also welcome to purchase 

food vouchers for items such as milk and eggs. Monetary donations 

should be made payable to Jones County Community 

Cupboard (not HACAP) and can be dropped in the 

collection plate at church. A basket is set up at the 

front entrance of church for all of your 

non-perishable donations. Thank you!
