As we journey together this Lenten season I can't help but be reminded of last year. The
journey through Lent was very moving for me. Together we followed the path with Jesus as
we read the stories each week. We met Bible characters each Wednesday to help us better
understand the impact God had and continues to have on the world. The worship committee
continues to work hard to help each of us in the journey of Lent. This year we will see some
things a little differently from what we saw last year; we will hear some new stories each week,
and we will be moved by the amazing grace which is God's love.
Sunday during adult Sunday School (everyone is invited to this tremendous event) we
talked a bit about God's love. That love, given to us through Jesus, is an action not a feeling.
God chooses to love us... to do for us... to be emptied for our sakes. It isn't a feeling for God.
We are fortunate. If the level of love we received was determined by God's feeling for us we
might be in a bit of trouble. Every time we mess up, every time we turn away from God, every
time we elevate ourselves above others, we disappoint God. I'm afraid my actions give God
more reason to not love me than to love me.
But God chooses to give that love to each of us. God chose to create humans. God
chose to come to us in Jesus. God chose to die on the cross. God chose to love us! In spite of
what we do or say God loves US. Think about that for a minute. No matter how much we
disappoint God there is still love. I wish it was true, but it isn't that way for us humans. We
judge others by how they live, what they do (or don't do) and by how they treat us. It's easy for
us to turn away from others because they are so different, so mean, so selfish, so... fill in the
blank. But God never turns away from us when we do those very things. God continues to
love us.
Here is the proof. None of us has ever been banished from the kingdom because we find
other things than God to worship. We worship our cars and God loves US. We worship our
houses and God loves US. We worship our intelligence, power, prestige and God loves US. I
don't think that love exists because we are so awesome and impress God. I know if that was
the reason for God's love I would fall way short of any deserving of love. No.... God chooses
to love me because he can. God chooses to love me because to not love me just doesn't fit into
the way God is. Sad as it is, we don't have that same attitude. We think of love only in terms
of feelings.... If we like someone we might love them. If we don't like someone, there is no
way we will love them. But each of us is a creature of God's kingdom, so God chooses to love
each of us. That is hard for us, because that means God loves the people we don't love.
So as we take the journey this year to the cross and the tomb, I hope we also experience
as a part of that journey the amazing love God chooses to give each of us; not because we
deserve it, not because we are so wonderful, but because God just does... God loves us. So as
you gaze at the cross up front, as you see the image of Jesus with a crown of thorns, as you
come to the table for communion, may each of you experience that amazing love that only God
can give.

The Worship Committee is offering a brief training session for ushers following the 8:00 &
10:30 services on Sunday, March 7th. The purpose of the session is to inform people of the
updated list of usher duties. The meeting is intended for current ushers, as well as people who
may be considering serving as an usher. If you have never ushered, please come and learn
about this worship opportunity at St. Paul. Please meet in the back of the sanctuary.

March, 2010– we are collecting items for Health Kits for
Lutheran World Relief. Everyone is invited to participate
in this project.
Items needed:
1 hand towel, dark color
1 wash cloth, dark color
1 bathsize bar of soap (4 or 5 oz.) any brand, in
original wrapping
1 adult size toothbrush in original wrapping
1 comb– wide tooth preferred, remove packaging
1 metal nail file or clippers with nail file attached
remove wrapping (no emery boards)
6 Band Aids 1/2”-3/4”, secure with rubber band
All items should be new, in good condition. Wrap
smaller items in wash cloth, wrap wash cloth and remaining
items in hand towel, tie with ribbon or yarn.
Complete kits or single items are welcome-these will be
used to complete kits. Or you may give money for
needed items. No toothpaste! Just leave kits or kit items
in the KIT BOX on the church kitchen cupboard.

As you do your Spring Cleaning, (or if you are doing the
occasional sorting, donating and tossing!) please keep in
mind that the Lutheran World Relief Quilt Project Crew can
use sheets, pillow cases, and blankets as well as fabrics.
One twin flat sheet makes a great quilt
back, 2 pillow cases plus some added
fabric will make a great quilt top or back,
and blankets will add warmth for a finished
quilt.
Thanks to all who donate to this on-going
project. Our quilts may be keeping a
Haitian family more comfortable in their
tent city, or a mother in Africa warm at
night at a refugee camp.
“REACHING OUT IN LOVE”
THANK YOU
Thank you to the many individuals who helped
make our “Reaching Out in Love” dinner such a
success. Through your efforts and generous
donations, we were able to raise more than
$3,500 to help our St. Paul family members with
some of the medical burdens they are facing. It’s
evident that we are truly a loving and caring
church family. Pastor Bill will be visiting with
affected families concerning the distribution of
these funds.
Thank You
So many wonderful people to thank for caring
cards, phone calls, great food and nice visits.
Thanks for Pastor Bill’s visits while in the
hospital, it meant so very much to both of us.
Thanks to my family, friends, and caring people
for all their prayers for me. Enjoy living.

MILITARY SERVICE PROJECT
THANK YOU
This is a portion of a letter that was received by
Sgt. Harold Pate, Jr. in response to the
Confirmation students’ military service project:
“Let everyone know that was involved with
getting the packages together that we all loved
all the items. The soldiers wanted me to tell you
guys that they were great and they thank
everyone for their support and we hope to be
home soon. Tell the kids thank you for the
letters, the soldiers love to read mail from kids
because it makes them feel so good to read
them. There were a couple of soldiers that got
tears in their eyes when they read them. That’s
because we all miss home so bad. Again

A few duties include: Taking care of the nursery; (wipe off
crib & little table, pick up and straighten room) over-see
kitchen (*Launder towels on counter, check & clean refrigerators
& stoves when needed) keep supplies stocked
(paper towels, dish soap in kitchen, Kleenex for bathroom,
plastic wrap & baggies).
*It will be very important that Work Groups select someone
to check on the kitchen.
• The Youth and Family Director position has
been advertised in various venues (Colleges,
camps, pastors/churches, Facebook/Internet,
etc. There have been two responses so far.
• Remodeling of Pastor’s office is in process.
• There were 89 people signed up for the
February 14th “Reaching Out in Love”
dinner.
• The Executive Committee will meet the first
Monday of each month at 6pm, Church
Council will meet the second Monday of each
month at 6pm.
• EPIC Scholarships: Each qualifying college
student from St. Paul will receive $200/year.
