Citizens Group Challenges Seabrook Station on Concrete Safety
By Stewart Lytle, Reporter
REGIONAL – A citizens
group is gearing up for an
expensive fight to stop the
Nuclear Regulatory Commission
from extending NextEra’s license
to operate the Seabrook Station
nuclear plant until 2050.
The group, C-10 Research
and Education Foundation,
made an appeal last week at
the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
in Newburyport for the funds
to pay for an attorney and an
expert witness to testify against
the operating company’s license
extension.
The NRC has scheduled a
public hearing in February on
the plant’s proposed license
renewal. The federal agency has
put NextEra’s application on hold
until the company can prove that
it can manage safely the problem
of deteriorating cement at the
plant.
The NRC staff is expected to
concrete. C-10 Board Member
Chris Nord described the plant’s
concrete as “the only thing that
separates us from the most toxic
substances in the world.”
The concrete has developed
alkali-silica reaction (ASR),
which is a chemical reaction that
can occur when alkaline cement
reacts with silica, found in some
types of concrete aggregates. It
occurs when the concrete gets
wet. Sitting on 900 acres adjacent
to rivers near the Atlantic Ocean,
the plant has been flooded and
the concrete has been soaked,
Nord said.
Dear Editor,
Community Connections
Rowley citizens’ investigation concerning voter/taxpayer respect
in the town presented at last town meeting for fiscal year 2019
prompted this opinion Business letter. Rowley Citizens Spotlight for Governmental
Transparency utilizing M.G.L. c. 231, § 59H seeking to
accountability has been successful, the Facebook For site Sale receives
numerous visits every day. This petition site promotes transparency
through public media. Transparency has been difficult by this
town given the recent Sports attempts to • gather Sports records of • Sports the selectmen
and water boards regarding their budget, spending and personnel
problems that were “resolved” in their executive sessions. Rowley
citizens thought last Pets, year’s selectmen’s Animals, promotions Plus of “citizen unquery”
at their meetings were bad until they found out something
at the annual town Health meeting. Most & of Fitness
you remember when you
could ask a question and get an answer. Whether it was transparent
or not, you could be the judge! The directive filtered down to the
water commissioners. They don’t even take citizens comments at
their meetings!
By the way, did anyone bother to tell the water commissioners
not to show up at their meetings!
Why show up? Ever since they promoted and passed the
“selectmen’s correction of Section 41 of 61b at the 2016 town
meeting”, their not running the water department anymore!! They
marched lockstep with the boss hogs!!!
Who’s “BOSS HOG”, more to come!!!!
The main point here; introduction of town issues to our leaders
used to be brought up under Article 2 at Town meeting. We the
People Founder, our own Stephen Comley, Sr. in his inquery, asked
the town why he couldn’t put forward a very important public safety
concern at the last meeting. He got the town’s response dated May,
11. The response: “someone could make a motion under Article 2
to paint the town hall with poka dots and the voters who were not
physically in attendance at the town meeting would have no chance
to speak or vote for or against such an action”.
What????
The current selectmen, except the current chair who had no
knowledge of the change, changed it at a un-specified meeting
according to WTP founder Steve Comley, Sr. Why, prey tell,
did they (Peterson, Snow & Merry) change that rights of Rowley
People? Can you spell “coverup”?
Rowley voters are spoon fed falsities! We don’t have the time
to investigate and we want to believe in our selectmen and water
boards! We couldn’t imagine that their non-transparent!
Drop in to one of their meetings and ask why!
Ops!!!! I forgot, no more questions because “Citizens Query” is
not allowed anymore!!!
Ask not what your town can do for you, ask what you can do for
your town. I guess that means for Rowleytes, serve up more taxes
please?
You be the judge!
You see where this is going or where this should go? God help
people of Rowley to gather strength to send message “we’re mad as
hell and won’t take this anymore”!
estate offers sweeping views of
two rivers, formal gardens, and
an abundance of ornamental
trees, rhododendrons, azaleas,
property’s cultural history is as
rich as its natural beauty, and
will be highlighted in a program
sponsored by the Museum of
Old Newbury on Thursday, June
7 at 7:00pm. Park interpreter
Donna Sudak will present “A
Town officials expect the fate
of the controversial project will
eventually be resolved through
been no discussions among the
parties or with the town.
In the interim, the project,
which has divided the town, is in
limbo.
The Planning Board
unanimously approved the One
Oceanfront project proposed
by the Big Block Development
Group on April 17. It provides
for a five-story complex of one-,
two- and three-bedroom units in
four large residential buildings at
Normally winning the
Planning Board’s approval makes
a developer giddy. Not the
group’s managing partner Wayne
Capolupo. He has said 12 to 18
of the imposed conditions would
make it virtually impossible to
finance the project.
The conditions he referred to
include the board’s requirement
that the condo buildings have
openings of 50 feet or more in
the structure. This condition is
designed to reduce the mass of
the buildings, which face the
not known how extensive the
ASR problem is at the plant.
And every batch of concrete that
is impossible to determine how
long the plant’s concrete will last,
Nord said.
A non-profit organization, C-
10 derives its name from the 10
mile area around the plant that
is designated as the evacuation
zone in the event there is an
emergency. Estimates are that
160,000 people in 23 cities and
towns in Massachusetts and New
Hampshire lives in the 10-mile
radius of the plant.
The group receives $90,000
Massachusetts to monitor the
beach and boardwalk.
Other conditions require that
the buildings be lower at the
corners. And another condition
would add guest parking.
Estimates are that these
conditions would reduce the
number of condos in the building
by about 50 units.
According to a public notice
published recently, the Big Block
Development Group called the
board’s conditions, particularly
its design guidelines, “highly
subjective, unduly vague and
ambiguous.”
The developers are not
challenging the board’s approval
of the project, only the conditions.
The neighbors object to the
board’s approval of the project.
At the public hearings the
Planning Board held on the
project, large numbers of
neighbors, including residents
of nearby Echo Ocean
condominiums, showed up to
voice their concerns.
The project would redefine
Salisbury beach, ridding the area
of some of its bars and restaurants
and game arcades that many
consider to be a blight on the
ocean front. Few seem like they
would miss Uncle Eddie’s, the
Carousel Lounge or the Upper
look at the lives of modern Afghan
RACHEL KADISH “THE
WEIGHT OF INK”
Just back from Israel (where she
received the 2017 National Jewish
Book Award!), Rachel Kadish
will share with us her inspiration
and process for writing her latest
book, “The Weight of Ink”. This
historical fiction intertwines the
lives of two women: a scribe for a
blind rabbi in 1660’s London and a
contemporary woman determined
to identify the scribe when she
encounters the 17th Century
documents. No stranger to the
NPR, Rachel’s other works include:
From a Sealed Room; Tolstoy Lied
and I Was Here. A greater Boston
area resident, we hope you will
join us in congratulating Rachel
on her success. This should be a
very interesting program! Monday,
GEORGETOWN – The Georgetown Council on Aging (COA) is seeking additional volunteer drivers to provide
medical transportation to local elders. Through Northern Essex Elder Transport, Inc. (N.E.E.T.), the COA provides local
elders with rides to medical appointments. Staffed by volunteer drivers, a donation of 43 cents per mile is suggested to
help support the program and defray the increased cost of gasoline for volunteer drivers. However, donations are only
suggested and no one will be denied a ride if unable to give a donation. A vital link in maintaining independence and
healthy wellbeing for elders, the N.E.E.T. program fills the transportation void that often exists in rural communities. The
program is a real and tangible way of making a difference in other people’s lives. During a recent survey, one local client
rated the program as an “A+ with stars”. For information on becoming a volunteer driver, please call the COA office at
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An apparent act of injustice might turn
out to be either an error in judgment or just plain stupidity. So calm
down and cool off, and let the explanations roll out.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s upsetting when someone you trusted
might have failed you. But with new opportunities ahead, you’ll soon be
too busy to feel even a wee bit sorry for yourself.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A sense of uncertainty could be a good
reason to change your position on an important matter. Someone close
might try to talk you out of it, but it’s your decision to make.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Being too zealous in pursuing your goal could create some resistance.
Try to be more mindful of what you ask people to do, and they’ll be more likely to do it.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) Things change as you go from being ignored to being Lionized once again.
This is a good time to reintroduce those previously rejected ideas to a
more receptive audience.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone new in your life
creates both anticipation as well as anxiety. Avoid the potential for
misunderstandings by watching what you say and how you say it.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Watch your budget so that
you don’t overspend now and have less to invest when the time is right
later on. Arrange to share your weekend with someone special.
SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The temptation to involve
yourself in a friend’s or family member’s personal problems is laudable.
But get the facts before you make a firm commitment.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might be
upset by some of your critics. But most of your associates continue to
keep the faith in your ability to get the job done, and done well.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’ve reached an
important point in your ongoing pursuit of your goals. You might
now want to consider letting someone you trust join you on your
journey.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You’ve been going
through a spate of uncertainty involving people you care for. But it
might be time to take a stand on a position you feel sure you can
defend.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Treading water keeps you busy,
but it won’t get you where you need to go. Time to stop making
excuses and to start moving ahead toward your goals.
BORN THIS WEEK: You see life as both creative and pragmatic.
You would not only be a fine artist, but also a successful one.
By J. Peter St. Clair, DMD
With more than 24 million
diabetics and 57 million prediabetics
in the United States, nearly
a quarter of the nation’s population,
there are a lot of people affected by
diabetes. The prevalence of diabetes
will increase by 54% to more than
54.9 million Americans between
2015 and 2030; annual deaths
attributed to diabetes will climb by
38% to 385,800. In addition, the
most up to date research shows the
connection between dental health
and diabetes has never been more
critical.
As an indication of our general
health, the rapidly rising rate of
diabetes should be ringing alarm
bells everywhere. The litany of
health implications from diabetes is
a long and grisly list. It is the sixth
leading cause of death in the U.S.
That is probably vastly understated
because as many as 65% of deaths
from diabetes are attributed to
heart attack and stroke. People
with diabetes have about twice the
overall risk of death as those who
don’t have the disease.
Complications from diabetes
cuts years off productive lives and
interfere with the quality of those
lives through a host of debilitating
health effects. Heart disease and
Brighter Smiles...
stroke rates are as much as four
times higher among diabetics.
Nearly three-quarters of diabetics
have high blood pressure. Each
year, diabetes causes blindness in
as many as 24,000 Americans. It is
the leading cause of kidney failure,
nervous system disease, amputations
– the list goes on.
This isn’t meant to be a scare
tactic. These are simply the facts
and, yes, they are sobering. But
if you have diabetes or are prediabetic,
you may want to brace
yourself. Because we are going to
talk straight about oral health and
diabetes, two diseases that can twist
each other into a tight downward
spiral of amplifying negative health
effects. Unless they are halted by
your physician and your dentist
working in tandem as a health
care team, together with your
commitment to hold up your end
of the bargain, these effects can
continue to compound.
The facts about the connections
between oral health and diabetes
are even more alarming than those
about diabetes alone. Here are just
a few:
Diabetics are twice as likely
to develop gum disease. This is
especially true if your diabetes is
not under control. The gum disease
then worsens your diabetes through
an automatic response that your
body uses to fight the infection.
People with gum disease are 270%
more likely to suffer a heart attack
than those with healthy gums.
People who have diabetes
home can meet your needs as the
years go by. It’s called “aging in
place,” and it requires advance
planning.
Determine what help you can
get, both now and as time goes on.
What senior services are available if
you need remodeling done on your
home? For example, if you want to
build a first-floor master bedroom
and bath so you can avoid climbing
the stairs in years to come, what
kind of financial help can you get?
Are there groups that will build a
ramp to your door should you ever
need one?
For the exterior of your
home, consider making some
modifications now. Better lighting
and sturdy steps will go a long way
to keeping you safe. If carpeting is a
