Hard Candy, DJ Timmothy Gibbons An Ode to Vogue Night Movers erotic disco burns all night long Text by Honor Rose Cooper Hedges, Images by Honor Rose Cooper Hedges and Jake Osman “FUCK YOU THERESA MAY,” screams a woman in a paper mask of Lady Diana, one hand holding a megaphone and the other with it’s middle finger up, poking viciously into the air whilst four underwear clad female-wrestlers circle each other, preparing to fight. This scene is unfolding at around 11pm in the middle of the dance floor at an event named Nice Mover’s Erotic Disco, where partygoers have taken a break from fashion designer Pam Hogg’s DJ set - which I heard was ‘Pure punk’, from a girl in the smoking area - to watch THERESAMAYSMACKDOWN, a queer, feminist wrestling troupe who present an anti-fascist, noise-driven ferocious fight to the death, of the alt-right. A performance which invoked a palpable sense of enjoyment, engrossment and fear across the audience. ‘It’ Da The aforementioned Erotic Disco, which resumed with Grace Jones’ My Jamaican Guy after the fight had ended, is the jewel in the centre of the crown forming Vogue Fabrics, Dalston’s Femmetopia Festival, a five day extravaganza of discussion, performance, art and parties, funded by the Arts Council England. The disco on the programme for tonight is the seventh instalment of Nice Mover, helmed by the enigmatic 20 year-old, Alexandra Loveless; always recognisable in a signature gold lace ruff paired with white and burnt red face make-up. Nice Mover is a hybrid of a club night and art installation where surprises await; dress to impress is seen as a challenge as opposed to a guidance and where you can win £50 cash by partaking in the Vogue Ball, run by Loveless’ friend and master of ceremonies Marcus Amaglo. 76 Loveless has been putting on parties under the name Nice Mover since November 2017, and in such a short space of time she has built up a devout following of party goers who dress to the nines, tens and eleven’s at the end of each month to worship in the basement of Vogue Fabrics. Which always ends up with everyone writing on the floor in a disco frenzy until the lights are turned on at 3am.
We Spoke to Alexandra Loveless about the in’s and out of Nice Mover Why did you start doing Nice Mover? I wanted to throw a party with good music in a cool environment; it grew from my small circle of friends - young creative lesbians, which is my target audience. When I first came to London all of the nights I would go to were run by gay men, so naturally the majority of the clientele were also gay men. I found it difficult to find lesbian friends, so I started a club night, not strictly lesbian by definition, but a large majority of the people who come are lesbian and bisexual women, which is great. I also noticed that no one ever really decorated the clubs, which is weird because you’d think that art students and creatives would care about shit like that, so I curate the space to match the theme of the night; we’ve had Blank Disco, where we hung canvas on the wall and everyone could paint the walls, and Ode to Blue, a night celebrating Derek Jarman’s Blue (1993), where all the walls were hung with cobalt silk whilst the iconic film was screened in the background. ‘It’s about the burdens I carry around’ Daniel Jaques Kershaw on their swiney outfit I like to take polaroid’s of all the attendees, it grew from frustration at seeing one person pick and choose who who was ‘interesting’ enough to be photographed, it’s such bullshit. That sort of thing leads to isolating people who think that certain nights are exclusive or that they’re not ‘cool enough’ which is really sad because I remember feeling like that at times. So yeah I take the polaroids not only to document what’s going on right now in terms of culture, but also just to like let everyone have a piece of the limelight you know? It’s important to make people feel beautiful. What is the inspiration behind the name Nice Mover? I got the name Nice Mover from a song, released in 1978 by the self proclaimed ‘art school dyke’ Gina Kikoine, who made up one half of the German synth duo Gina X Performance. I remember listening to the album which is also called Nice Mover, and it just perfectly encompassed how I felt last year, It’s actually an incredible piece, everyone should listen to it. Anyway, the lyrics to Nice Mover are ‘I’m your transformer call me Marlene call me Gino, that’s me you know. I like it, je l’aime, mi piace, Nice Mover, ring up Studio 54 New York.’ You can probably see the androgynous feel with her being Gina and Gino, and the Studio 54 reference is self explanatory. I don’t know why I felt so drawn to it, I just thought it was cool and really encapsulated the mood of the night.
