Last month I mentioned the phrase
“If you don’t grow it, you don’t
know it” . Let’s drill down on that
concept. Our region has some of
the highest health disparities in the
country. The disparities are cancer,
diabetes, cardiac and stroke. All
diet related. The history of the area
informs that the state of North Carolina
itself, was created in 1789, for its
fertile soil and long growing season.
So, how does that reconcile? The air
is clean, the water is generally clean
according to the annual water report.
So, lets look at the soil part of our
environment.
I’ve been advocating for an accredited
organic soil testing lab operating
out of Elizabeth City State University,
our local Non-Land-Grant College
of Agriculture (NLGCA). An organic
soil testing facility should be an
important economic and epidemiological
asset to the region. I strongly
appreciate the out pouring of community
support for our pursuit of cleaner
more wholesome food.
Economically, annual fee schedules
for organic testing are high. Some as
high as $5,000 annually just for testing.
The USDA uses third party testing
enterprises who set there own
fees which the USDA subsidizes. A
testing enterprise based out of Clemson
University is the nearest tester
in the region, but no longer services
North Carolina. The College of the
Albemarle (COA) is expanding it’s
curriculum to include Specialty crops,
and organic farming. Considering
our superior transportation logistics,
including a major seaport, rail, and
access to 60,000,000+ customers
within a days drive. Using modern
farming methods such as spin farming
(small acreage), high tunnels and
green houses, the Albemarle can be
a major player in the organic produce
sector.
In reading ECSU Chancellor Thomas
Conway’s exit interview, I’m very
pleased to learn of the possible collaborative
efforts of our three higher
education institutions (Elizabeth City
State University, College of the Albemarle,
and the Mid-Atlantic Christian
University). I pray that agriculture
enterprises and clean food will be
part of their agenda. Feeding the
poor is part of being a christian, and
our region is one of the poorest in
the state. Hopefully, these initiatives
will result in more economical and
healthier food choices, as we join the
global food chain as the “ Organic
Capital of the World”.
Finally, my clergy friends and family,
have convinced me that my advocacy
is a calling and I will accept that. I
will be dedicating the rest of my life to
advancing wholesome clean food to
all of our citizenry particularly those
on the lower economic scale. Join
the clean food movement.
