Classification Information
Classification Key
The UK Classification Key is currently used to classify and, where appropriate, to index all
published UK specifications.
In addition selected published European (EP), Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications
and US specifications have, in the past, been classified. Details of classification of non-UK
documents on the UK Key are given at the end of this notice.
The Classification Key sets out the Patent Office’s system of classification by means of over
400 headings with detailed sub-classifying and indexing by coded terms within the
headings. There are altogether about 78000 of these terms. The headings are arranged to
form 40 divisions. One or more divisions are published as Units of the Classification Key, as
shown below, at £12.50 per unit. The cost of a complete key is £300.
significant uses, applications and utilities disclosed in connection with inventions classified
in one or more of the above headings.
In addition, the divisional structure above includes three headings used purely for indexing
purposes, viz heading C6Y, Indexing Schedule for micro-organism information (used for
recording new micro-organisms, and micro-organisms used in chemical, biochemical or
microbiological processes), heading C3W, Indexing Schedule for polymer information (used
for recording polymer information in documents classified in certain other C3 headings) and
H3T, Indexing Schedule for amplifiers, oscillators, pulse logic and switching circuits (used in
headings H3F, H3P or H3W).
Three free pamphlets, which are supplied to each purchaser of one or more key units are
available, namely:
1. “Structure of the Classification Key”, listing the headings grouped under each of the 40
divisions.
2. “Notes on the Use of the Classification Key”
3. “Heading U1S Universal Indexing Schedules for use, Application, Utility and Property”
A “Concordance between the UK Key and the IPC” and a “Documentation Records”
pamphlet are also available. These are supplied free of charge to each purchaser of a
complete Key or can be purchased separately at a cost of £8 per copy.
The Key is revised at intervals to incorporate changes in classification. Previously each
edition related to a range of 50000 specifications or less. Now each edition is related to
calendar dates.
