Notices - cont
The range of specification numbers covered by Series C and D File Lists depends upon the
Heading (or Part-Heading) concerned and the extent of backlogging following relevant
revisions of the Classification key; this is because it has not always been necessary or
efficient to backlog a new revision fully. Appropriate details are given in the Documentation
Record of Each Heading (or Part-Heading), including information on how to retrieve relevant
patent documents by series C or D file Lists as far back as the computer records go, using
earlier editions of the Key if appropriate.
In addition, as stated above, Series A File Lists are also available, and may need to be
ordered if all relevant specifications below 1000001 are required to be retrieved, as the
Series C and D File Lists do not necessarily contain all relevant specifications published
before number 1000001. Further information may be obtained from Classification and
Documentation Division or the Search and Advisory Service.
In Headings where recent classification work has been carried out the information given in
the Documentation record of the Heading may not be up to date. In such cases
Classification and Documentation Division should be consulted for the latest situation.
Each file list is produced to fulfil a specific order, however a set of the Series A File Lists is
available for reference in the British Library.
It will be appreciated if any instance of incorrect classification or indexing is brought to the
notice of Classification and Documentation Division.
The practice of classifying and indexing all published EP and PCT applications on the UK
Classification Key ceased from specifications numbered EP 0285000 and WO1989/000001
onwards and therefore, subject to certain exceptions set out below, EP and PCT
applications published from these numbers will not appear on subject-matter file lists based
on the provisions of the UK Key.
Classification Manual
A Manual is available which explains in detail the system used for Heading C2C. It also
contains notes and examples on both indexing and searching and will thus be found helpful
by all those using this heading for Search purposes, especially be way of Series C and D file
lists.
Heading C2C, Organic Compounds:
Manual for the Computer Retrieval System “Organic Compounds” C2C.
The latest edition of the C2C Manual which replaced the 1974 edition and its
supplements was published to coincide with Edition I of the Classification Key. Copies
are available from Sales price £25.00.
This Manual is used in the UK Patent Office for all searches within the field of organic
chemistry corresponding to Heading “C2C - Organic compounds” of the UK
Classification Key, and was developed by the co-operative effort of some 30
examiners and analysts. It first became operative in April 1974 with the exception of a
few classifying and indexing terms which became operative later.
Since 1974 there have been a number of changes to, or affecting the system. The
major changes are summarized in Appendix F of the latest edition.
