The Dish
Malibu’s Grom makes sweet summer days even sweeter
Barbara Burke
Freelance Reporter
Malibu’s sunshine and
surfing-filled summer days
and their sweet-breezed
nights are right around the
corner, and there’s nothing
like a high-quality gelato,
sorbet or granita to satiate
one’s sweet tooth.
Malibu’s Grom, a gelateria,
is the real deal. Grom
serves luscious, flavorful
scoops, often con panna
(with whipped cream).
“People come in just to
get the whipped cream,”
said Kenneth Cerritos, assistant
manager. “It’s just
that good.”
A small whipped cream
is $8; medium is $12.50
and large is $23.50.
Grom sources its ingredients
from all over the world
and uses a prototype organic
farm, Mura Mura, in
Costigliole d’Asti, a town
in Piedmont, Italy, which
cares for the fruit by hand.
Farmers only pick fruit
when it is perfectly ripe.
The plethora of ladybugs
at the farms help to tackle
aphids and insects on the
plants, thus avoiding harmful
chemicals.
“Grom is 100 percent
natural,” a sign declares.
“We use no added flavorings,
colors, preservatives
or chemical additives of
any kind. We never have.
We never will.”
Try the stracciatella,
made with sweet milk and
scrumptious shavings of
Colombian Teyuna chocolate
chips (two scoops for
$6.50). Creamy, luscious,
sweet and full of chocolate
chunks, this choice
delights. Consider adding a
biscotti (or two) on top for
extra flavor (50 cents per
biscotti).
Another delicious option
is to “marry” two flavors
that go together well.
One such example, which
caught the Surfside’s fancy,
was the combination
of albicocca (apricot) and
fragole (strawberry).
“This sorbet was tropical
and refreshing, especially
for a summer day,”
said customer Molly Mendelsohn.
“I enjoyed the
vibrancy of colors. Grom
uses all natural ingredients
and I know that it’s
made of good things. That
makes me feel good to
eat it.”
Try the pistachio gelato,
made with Mawardi pistachios
(two scoops for
$6.50).
“The pistachio is delicious
and it is nice and
green in color,” said
Chandler Payne. “It’s
nice and creamy and just
a little salty. Its texture is
creamy and it is velvety
smooth.”
Well-heeled travelers and
gelato aficionados seek out
Grom locations in the United
States.
“This gelato is as close
to Italian as you can get
in the states,” said Colin
Wright, a visitor from London.
“Grom is all over Europe.
We seek it out and it
well exceeds traditional ice
cream.”
One can’t lose by trying
the granita: an ice slush
dessert that is sweet and satiating
(prices vary).
Grom changes its flavors
each month and only uses
fine ingredients such as
Pizzuta almonds from
Sicily, and licorice and
lemons from Italy.
If one needs a little kick
to finish a busy day, Grom
also offers Affogato: a
scoop of gelato with a shot
of espresso poured on top
($5.75 for a single; $6.75
for a double).
