What do you enjoy most about the game of softball? I enjoy being on a team with my friends. I also love the different aspects of the game. I love cheering on my teammates while they’re at bat. In what area would you say you improved the most this last season? I improved a lot with my swing in batting. In the beginning I wasn’t really using my hips, as my coaches would say. By the end of the season my arms moved faster in my swing and I was also using my hips, giving me a harder and faster swing. Did playing soccer help you in any way when it came time for softball season? Playing soccer helped me because it showed me I was capable of improving something in a short amount of time. It also helped me with what to expect from the other teams we were going to be playing and [showed me that] I have to always try my best and to be focused in the games. What are your hobbies outside of softball and soccer? I love to hike, Rollerblade, spend time with friends and go to the beach. What’s the best advice you got this season? If you mess up on a play just forget about [it] and move on because if you don’t you’ll have a higher chance of messing up on the next play. My coach [Geoff Stern] told us that during a game one time. Where in the world would you most like to travel? There are so many good places I would love to travel to, but if I had to narrow it down to one, it would be Costa Rica because I have heard the rainforests are beautiful there. I have also heard the beaches are amazing. Do you have any gameday rituals or superstitions? I try not to think about what I could do wrong. I also listen to some upbeat music on the bus rides to get me excited. I try to get focused in on the game rather than thinking about other things. For example: homework. Suzy Demeter/22nd Century Media Who would you say has the best nickname on the team? [Sophomore pitcher] Rachel Oronoz. Her nickname is Seams because when we were in Little League she got hit on the face with a softball and seams marks showed up after. If you could have one superpower what would it be and why? I would want to be able to fly so I could get to places faster and in a cooler way than everyone else. Who were your role models growing up? [American softball player] Jessica Mendoza and [American soccer player] Alex Morgan. They are still my role models. They always try their best no matter what. They are so encouraging to their teammates as well. Interview by Freelance Reporter Ryan Flynn Pepperdine Athletics Beach volleyball’s Sicoli earns national honor The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced last week that Marcio Sicoli was named the AVCA National Assistant Coach of the Year. It was the first time the AVCA honored an assistant coach with the award, and it was Sicoli’s first honor as an assistant for the Waves. Sicoli will be the head of the Pepperdine beach volleyball program following the completion of this season, replacing Pepperdine legend Nina Matthies, who is retiring. “This is a great honor for Marcio and recognizes his standing as one of the top collegiate coaches in beach volleyball,” said Steve Potts, director of athletics. “While already known as one of the top beach volleyball coaches in the world, we are so pleased that Marcio will follow Nina Matthies as the head coach of our program.” Sicoli finished his seventh season with the Waves in 2018 and has helped the team to a berth in every single national championship since the sport’s inception in 2012. Durign the past three seasons, he has helped lead the Waves to three-consecutive West Coast Conference Championship titles and appearances in the NCAA Tournament with a runner-up finish in 2017, a fourthplace finish in 2018 and a fifth-place finish in 2016. This season, the Waves posted a 25-5 overall record, including an untarnished 8-0 record when playing at Zuma Beach and a 21-5 record against nationally ranked opponents. This season, team members Deahna Kraft and Corinne Quiggle earned AVCA All-American honorable mention for their successes at the No. 1 position. Three other pairs also garnered VolleyMob All-American acclaim, as Skylar Caputo and Alexis Filippone garnered first team honors from the No. 4 position, and Madalyn Roh and Brook Bauer and Heidi Dyer and Gigi Hernandez were honored with second team status from the No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively. The Waves also took home all West Coast Conference top honors as Quiggle, Kraft and Bauer were named WCC Player, Defender and Freshman of the Year, respectively. MEN’S TENNIS Program welcomes new coach Adam Schaechterle has been hired as the head coach of the men’s tennis program. Schaechterle is currently the associate head coach at the University of Notre Dame. He also spent time at the helm of the University of North Florida and assisted at his alma mater Northwestern University. He will be the 16th head coach in the program’s history. Pepperdine has made 38 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 2006 national championship and runner-up finishes in 1982 and 1986. The Waves have also had two doubles pairs take home the NCAA doubles championship crown in 1984 and 1985. In singles, Robbie Weiss won an NCAA singles title in 1988, while the Waves have finished as runner-up on two other occasions. At Notre Dame between 2013 and 2018, Schaechterle helped lead the team to its first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance since 2007, its first two National Indoors appearances since 2008 and the second-highest year-end ranking since 1992. While there, the team posted an 82-63 overall record in five seasons, including a 21-10 record in 2014 en route to the NCAA Sweet 16. This season, the team finished with a 19- 14 record and reached the NCAA second round. He also coached the first singles player in Notre Dame history to reach the NCAA singles semifinals and the second doubles pair to reach the NCAA doubles semifinals since 1994. He also was selected as the United States Tennis Association Men’s Collegiate National Team Coach for the 2017-18 campaign. From 2011-2013, Schaechterle was the head coach for the University of North Florida. He led the squad to its first undefeated Atlantic Sun regular season, the first appearance in the Atlantic Sun Tournament final and to many team, singles and doubles year-end rankings. He was named Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year in 2013. The team went 35-14 overall through two seasons, including a 19-6 record and an ASUN championship match appearance in 2012.
