Weathering the Storm
Wet May ends with early season heat as summer hits stride
May weather in
review in New Lenox
The very cold weather we
experienced in April gave
way to well-above normal
temperatures in May.
We had-days with temperatures
below-normal
in May, including a high
temperature of 52 degrees
May 11 and a high of 55
degrees as late as May 20.
But the average temperature
for the month of May ended
up being 7 degrees above
normal and ranked is the
warmest May in more than
30 years. Nearly half of the
days in May (14) recorded a
high temperature of at least
80 degrees.
On May 27, the high
temperature of 97 tied the
daily high temperature record
previously set in 2012.
The 97-degree temperature
also tied the second-hottest
temperature ever recorded
in May, with 98 degrees on
May 31, 1934, being the
highest temperature recorded
for the month. The 97-degree
temperature was the hottest
temperature recorded in any
month since July 25, 2012,
when the temperature rose to
99 degrees.
The 95-degree temperature
recorded on May 28 tied
the daily record (set in 2012)
and also tied the highest
temperature ever recorded
on Memorial Day (also set
in 2012). The three-day
stretch of 90 degree temperatures
(May 26, 27 and 28)
was the earliest stretch of
90-degree temperatures since
a nine-day stretch in 1977
(May 16-24). This was only
the second time on record
with two days of 95 degrees
or higher in May, with the
other occurrence being in
2012. The normal number
of 90-degree days in May is
0.5 days (one day every two
years in May).
While the heaviest rainfall
for the month of May occurred
to the north and west
of our area, our area still
experienced above-normal
precipitation for the month.
O’Hare International Airport
recorded 8.21 inches of rain
in May, exceeding the old
record of 7.59 inches set in
May of 1945. The total precipitation
at O’Hare in May
2018 was more than double
the normal May precipitation
of 3.68 inches. Midway
International Airport had
5.24 inches in May.
Subtropical Storm Alberto
Areas west of Interstate
294 to the north and west of
I-55 to the south experienced
the heaviest precipitation
amounts produced by remnants
of Subtropical Storm
Alberto on May 30. Below
are a couple of the rainfall
amounts in our area reported
on May 30.
• Homer Glen 0.18 inches
• New Lenox 0.18 inches
It is not common for
Northeast Illinois to experience
precipitation from
tropical storms, but we had
more than 8 inches of rain
recorded in September,
2008, from the remnants of
Hurricane Ike.
Other than the rain from
Alberto on May 30, the
majority of the precipitation
for the month occurred
from May 1-21. Little or no
precipitation was recorded
from May 22-29, which
included the hot Memorial
Day weekend.
• Stay hydrated: Drink
plenty of liquids that are not
sugary or alcoholic. Replace
salt and minerals with sport
drinks, unless your physician
does not recommend them
for you.
• Outdoors: Limit strenuous
activities, if possible.
Take breaks in the shade as
often as possible. Wear appropriate
clothing and schedule
your outdoor activities
carefully. Pace yourself and
cut down on exercise. Avoid
hot metals. Wear sunscreen.
• Indoors: If possible, stay
cool indoors in an air-conditioned
structure. Check up
on the elderly, the sick and
those without air-conditioning.
If you are in a building
or room without air-conditioning,
and the temperature
in the room is higher than
90 degrees, do not have a
fan blowing directly on you.
Blowing dry, hot air will
dehydrate you faster than
without the fan. Keep pets
hydrated.
•Vehicles: Never leave
children or pets unattended
in vehicles. Look before you
lock. Child vehicular deaths
