Minimum municipal tax levy implemented
Lisa Bye
ECA Review
In order to ensure that all property
owners pay a minimum amount for
basic municipal services, the Town of
Coronation has implemented a minimum
municipal tax levy of $500 per
parcel of land.
It will be applied to all assessment
classes except Linear Assessment.
The minimum tax only applies to a
property if the calculated tax rate

multiplied by the assessed value of the
property is lower than the amount set
as the minimum tax.
Municipal residential property tax is
currently set at .0140254.
For clarification purposes, a property
with an assessed value of $30,000
would be multiplied by .0140254 and
this would be $420.76. This amount is
less than the $500 minimum municipal
tax levy, so the property owner would
get an additional tax notice of $79.24 to
make up the difference.
Roaming paving scams
Stettler RCMP would like
to remind rural residents of
seasonal paving scams,
which typically pop up each
spring and summer, and
involve the following:
1. Someone representing
a paving company will randomly
attend the residence
trying to offer a paving job
2. The person will often
say they are finishing up a
job nearby and have extra
material they’d like to use
3. They offer to do the
paving job at a considerably
reduced price because the
resident will be doing them
a favour by allowing them to
use the left over product
4. The paving is completed
using inferior
materials
5. Within a year’s time,
the paving will begin to fail/
fall apart
6. Attempts to locate the
paving company or rep are
unsuccessful
Stettler RCMP reminds
citizens to do their due diligence
and ensure any
contract work they have
done is by reputable people/
companies.
This may include conducting
online research,
checking references or
speaking personally with
other clientele in the area.
Stolen property returned
In mid April, 2018, a male
attended the Stettler Wal-
Mart, obtained a number of
products and left the store
without purchasing them.
Shortly after, the male
returned to the store and
‘returned’ the stolen
property.
The male was believed to
have left the area in a white
Dodge Neon.
If anyone has information
about this or any other
crime, they are encouraged
to contact the Stettler RCMP
or Crimestoppers.
Arrest following assault
The RCMP have a
23-year-old male in custody
after arresting him on the
high school field, and
seizing a ‘bb gun’.
At 11:57 a.m. Wed. May 30,
the RCMP responded to a
complaint of a male
assaulting two adults at a
residence.
During the assault, the
male brandished what
appeared to be a firearm,
and then fled on foot.
RCMP
The RCMP located the
suspect male on the football
field at Wm. E. Hay Stettler
Secondary Campus and
effected his high risk arrest
without incident. The male
was in possession of a bb
gun.
Charges are pending
against the suspect, who
cannot be named. The adult
victims of the assault have
suffered minor injuries.
There is no indication that
any students in the school
were in danger, and this
incident was not associated
to the school in any fashion.
Given the speed with
which this situation was
resolved, the school was not
placed in a lockdown. The
Clearview School Division
has ensured parents were
advised of this incident by
way of messaging from Wm.
E. Hay Stettler Secondary
Campus.
Drug and property
offences
“Apprehending these
offenders was a priority for
all of the detachments
involved,” says Corporal
Trent Cleveland, Killam
RCMP Detachment
Commander. “We appreciate
the tips received
during this investigation as
it assisted us in arresting
repeat offenders and disrupting
their illegal
activities.”
On May 22, 2018, Killam
RCMP responded to report
of a stolen truck being
located in Hardisty, Ab.
The victim called police to
report the location of the
vehicle.
Before police arrived,
two suspects exited an Inn
and started driving the
stolen truck. The truck was
located in Hughenden, Ab.
several hours later where it
was reported the suspects
had fled on foot.
Killam RCMP along with
members from Provost,
Consort, Coronation RCMP
Detachments and Police
Dog Services (PDS)
searched the area. One suspect
was taken into custody
without incident.
An additional call for
service was received from
the public for the second
male who was also arrested
several hours later.
A search warrant was
executed at a room at the
Inn the same day and
police seized 40
grams of heroin,
cannabis, ammunition,
tools and
various identification
items
which were
reported stolen.
Daniel Newton,
(32) and Derryl-
Leigh Whitney
George, (28) both
of Camrose were
charged with possession
of stolen
property over
$5000 and possession
of a
controlled substance
(heroin).
Daniel Newton
was also charged
with possession
of ammunition
while prohibited.
accused were
Recreation facility rental policy
Council discussed what the procedure
for renting the recreation
facilities to the school will be.
They amended their policy to state
that the town facilities may be rented
by the Coronation School at no cost,
provided the functions or athletic
activities deal specifically with student
curriculum or programming.
The rates and damage deposits of
the recreation facilities were assessed,
and council will come back and look at
this further as they may want to adjust
some of the damage deposits once they
have done some more research.
Street signage
The town will be conducting a street
sign inventory to see which ones are
missing or damaged and new signs
will be ordered.
From the bleachers
Shapovalov heading towards top of tennis world
by Bruce Penton
Denis Shapovalov isn’t No. 1 in the
world of professional tennis — not yet,
anyway — but he’s certainly the best
19-year-old in the world.
The Ontario teen is on the verge of
becoming a tennis superstar.
And there’s no reason to think that
one day, he could ascend to the
ranking of No. 1 in the world.
Top-ranked Rafael Nadal is 32, an
age when most players start thinking
about retirement.
Roger Federer, the current No. 2, is
36 years old and cannot physically continue
to be the best in the world.
Shapovalov, coached by his mother,
who runs a tennis academy in a
suburb of Toronto, is still four or five
years away from his prime, and when
he hits that top level at age 24 or 25,
many of the current stars will be
finished.
It’s not as if Shapovalov is a slamdunk
guarantee to reach the top of the
world rankings.
Germany’s Alexander Zverev is only
21 and ranked third.
Dominic Thiem of Austria is ranked
eighth in the world and is only 24.
Hyeon Chung, 22, is 19th in the
world.
So five or six years from now, the
quartet of Shapovalov, Zverev, Thiem
and Chung will probably be the dominant
players.
No. 1 could be up for grabs.
After some recent mild success at
the Italian and French Opens,
Shapovalov surpassed Milos Raonic as
the top-ranked Canadian, moving up
to No. 25 in the world while Raonic,
who holds the record as Canada’s
highest-ranked professional (he made
it as high as No. 6 in 2015), has dropped
to No. 28.
Shapovalov’s recent move into the
top 30 marked the first time anyone
under the age of 20 had held such a
lofty position.
Never comfortable on clay surfaces,
Shapovalov said he told his handlers
to schedule as many European claycourt
events as possible this year
because he needed more experience on
clay.
One day, he hopes, it will pay off
with a Grand Slam title in Paris.
hope, will take a few more baby steps
Alberta support for the Trans Mountain
AB Government press release
The Trans Mountain Expansion
Project will help create tens of thousands
of jobs, ensure Canadians get fair
value for our oil in international markets
and help keep us moving forward
on our climate change commitments.
This will mean more money for health
care, schools, roads and public transit
across Canada. Getting Canadian
energy to tidewater through the expansion
of this pipeline will help Albertans
and Canadians.
The Government of Alberta has
agreed to provide support to the
Government of Canada in its acquisition
of the Trans Mountain Expansion
Project and associated assets. This support
was instrumental to ensuring the
continued construction and timely
completion of the project.
In providing the support, Alberta
was driven by three primary objectives
– construction resumes immediately,
ensuring the timely completion of the
project, and ensuring that Albertans
get value for any support provided by
the province. Under the agreement,
Alberta commits to provide a backstop
to the Government of Canada to help
cover costs arising from unforeseen
circumstances. Alberta’s contribution
to costs could range from zero to a maximum
of $2 billion.
If Alberta’s backstop is ultimately
required, it would share eligible
costs with Canada, up
to a maximum contribution
of $2 billion. Alberta’s contribution
would be payable to
Canada only upon successful

completion of the project. In
exchange for its contribution,
Alberta would receive
equity in the completed
project commensurate with
its contribution.
Proud owners!
by Herman Schwenk
Isn’t this a wonderful government
that we have in Canada?
They just rescued the Kinder
Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline
from being abandoned and by using
our taxpayer money, now you get to be
a “proud owner” of this important
piece of infrastructure.
Somebody has figured out that you
will own 5.87 centimetres of the line
worth about $124.00.
Now mind you, the government is
going to pay Kinder Morgan $4.5 billion
for just the existing pipeline and
facilities, the cost of building the
extension will be additional.
That does not mean that the pipeline
extension will actually become a
reality, as the BC Government is just
as adamant as they were before that
they do not want the pipeline.
“
We think that if
the Liberals stay in
power they will use that
pipeline to control
Alberta’s energy
policy.
They say they are concerned about a
tanker spill.
They contend a spill of bitumen from
Alberta’s oil sands would be much
worse to clean up than a spill of ordinary
crude.
The idea that there is a high risk of a
tanker spill is just a red herring.
They have been taking crude from
that facility since 1953 without a
problem so why the concern now with
modern tankers that are much safer?
Seems strange that tankers bringing
crude into the country are much safer
than tankers that take crude away
from the country.
Kinder Morgan has estimated that
the cost of building the extension
would be $7.4 billion.
Governments are very inefficient
when it comes to managing any kind of
a business.
For example, when the Federal
Government owned Trans Canada
Airways and Canadian National
Railways they always lost money and
had to be subsidized, now both corporate-owned
entities are profitable.
Can you imagine what it will cost to
“
construct the $7.4 billion pipeline
extension with government in charge
of the construction?
You can be sure it will be much
higher, maybe up to 50 per cent higher
so your 5.87 centimetres of pipeline
will cost you closer to $350.
Federal Finance Minister Bill
Morneau has stated that government
will look for a private sector buyer for
the pipeline when it is completed.
I do not trust this Liberal
Government and do not believe for one
minute that is what they will do.
Other people that I have spoken with
agree with me.
We think that if the Liberals stay in
power they will use that pipeline to
control Alberta’s energy policy.
It will be another national energy
plan, similar to what Trudeau # 1 did
in 1980.
It is not that long ago since Justin
Trudeau stated in a speech in Eastern
Canada that the Oil Sands needed to be
phased out.
What better way to create leverage
for control of Alberta’s energy
resources.
Trudeau and Notley could have put
enough pressure on Horgan to force
him to back down but they didn’t have
the political will to do it.
When John Horgan changed tactics
and said he was going to take the issue
to court, Notley immediately withdrew
her wine ban.
Did she think his change of tactics
meant she had won?
That action told Horgan that Notley
was just making threats so that she
had the appearance of being serious.
She should have told him the wine
ban comes off when the line is under
construction.
Same thing with Trudeau, he has
promised B.C. over $5 billion for various
infrastructure programs.
He could have told B.C. no money till
the pipeline is built.
Horgan knew he was in the driver’s
seat when Trudeau refused to do that.
Due to Notley and Trudeau’s lack of
resolve, we get to be “proud owners” of
a pipeline.
Purchasing Kinder Morgan’s assets
does not mean the pipeline will get
built.
This refusal to build pipelines is all
about the idea that pipelines contribute
to man-made climate change.
Common sense will tell you that
man has as much chance to change the
climate as he has to control the lava
flow from the volcano eruption on the
big island in Hawaii.
ECA Review
Fact—this isn’t the first time government
investment has been used to
save a major project.
In the 1970s, the Alberta
Conservative, the federal Liberal and
the Ontario Conservative governments
collectively took a 30 per cent equity
position in Syncrude to save the
project.
The east coast Hibernia project
looked doomed in the 1990s until the
federal Conservative government took
an eight per cent equity position and
ponied up a $3.8 billion loan guarantee
to the private sector owners.
Husky Oil needed government support
in the 1990’s to salvage their
Lloydminster Upgrader selling 50 per
cent equity to the Alberta
Conservative and the federal Liberal
governments.
Fact—today Kinder Morgan walked
away from the Trans Mountain
Pipeline project. Corporations work
for shareholders. They don’t give a rip
about creating jobs, it’s all about risk
and returns!
Today we have a federal Liberal government
and a provincial ND
government purchasing one hundred
per cent of the assets of the Trans
Mountain Pipeline and making a deal
to retain all critical executive and technical
people associated with the
project, for exceptionally low bonuses.
Fact—the purchase of the Trans
Mountain Pipeline is not about ideology.
The examples above show that
all political parties, Conservatives,
Liberals and New Democrats, make
these equity decisions when the private
sector steps away.
The job of government is to work for
the best interests of their country or
province. Governments save jobs and
understand the long-term benefits of
major projects such as the Trans
Mountain Pipeline.
Fact—loan guarantees to major corporations
are a costly sink hole for
taxpayers. Governments end up with
no seat at the board table and zero
chance of a return on investment—
think Bombardier!
I also was at the table
during negotiations between an
Alberta government Crown corporation
and Bow Valley Industries to build
a private sector hazardous waste
facility in Swan Hills.
The deal was a disaster for taxpayers
as Bow Valley eventually (after the
Alberta government chief negotiator
was fired) got a sweet heart deal, 100
percent cost recovery plus 15 per cent
guaranteed return. The facility was a
financial bust for taxpayers!
Fact—the Syncrude investment
secured the eventual oil sands boom.
All governments earned a return on
their investment when they divested
and, of course, continue to reap benefits
from royalties, direct and indirect
jobs and personal income tax receipts.
Fact—Hibernia lifted
Newfoundland to a have-province
from a have-not-province. The eight
per cent government investment has
been maintained and annual returns
continue to flow into government
coffers.
Fact—the Lloydminster Upgrader
investment lost money for Alberta and
Canadian taxpayers because of ideology.
Both the Liberal Finance
Minister, Paul Martin and Premier
Ralph Klein believed in small governments,
privatizing everything and
unloading assets even at a loss.
The sale of their equity cost respective
taxpayers 25 cents on the dollar.
The ND government of Saskatchewan
bought their 50 percent equity portion
since the private sector still was
uninterested.
When Saskatchewan sold four years
later, they walked away with their
entire investment intact and in the
interim, saved jobs.
The ND government in British
Columbia is making the Trans
Mountain pipeline about ideology
likely because the balance of power,
and their political survival, rests with
the Green Party.
Just four examples given, but equity
positions in ‘private sector’ projects
were taken four times by a
Conservative government, three times
by a Liberal government and twice by
a New Democrat government.
Good governance is never about
ideology!
Cloud lingers over Trans Mountain Pipeline
by Hon. Kevin Sorenson, M.P.,
(Battle River-Crowfoot)
“The sun will be beating
down on the Trans Mountain
terminal in Burnaby this
summer, but
there will be
few signs of
sunny ways.”
Those are
the words of
National Post
reporter
John Ivison
as he
Sorenson
summed up
his article on
the Federal
government’s purchase of
Trans Mountain.
Mr. Ivison’s characterization
is reflective of many Canadians’
sentiments including my feelings
on the latest development
in this saga.

I, my Conservative colleagues,
Albertans and many
Canadians, are relieved that the
Federal Government has finally
taken some action to ensure the
survival of this nationally significant
project.
For far too long there has
been much uncertainty whether
this pipeline would ever be
completed.
The Liberal government
removed some of that uncertainty
on May 29th when it
announced the purchase of the
Trans Mountain pipeline for
$4.5 billion.
This does not, however, mean
that there will be smooth waters
or sunny ways going forward as
Ivison outlines.
First, Canadian taxpayers are
on the hook for $4.5 billion and
an estimated $7 billion more as
a direct result of the Prime
viewpoint
Minister’s failure to act sooner.
Kinder Morgan never asked
for one dollar of taxpayer’s
money.
All the company wanted was
certainty, and that is why they
gave the Government until May
31st to provide some
assurances.
Kinder Morgan’s assets have
now been sold.
They are abandoning their
expansion plans in Canada and
taking their significant investment
in this country elsewhere.
They are doing so at a time
when we can ill afford it as business
investment in Canada has
fallen by five per cent or $12.7
billion since 2015.
During this same period,
business investment in the US
increased by nine per cent.
Foreign direct investment
plummeted by 42 per cent in
Trans Mountain – “Making
a virtue out of a necessity”
by Lee Cooper, Constituency Assistant
to Wes Taylor MLA,
Battle River-Wainwright
The phrase “Making a virtue out of
a necessity” first appears in Geoffrey
Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, written
around 1390.
The Tales concern a range of diverse
characters who relate their version of
a particular event. Scholars of English
literature observe that this produces
stories with conflicting views of the
same reality they all face.
As regards Trans Mountain, the difficulty
facing Albertans is whose
reality are you going to believe, the
NDP’s or the UCP’s?
First, let me tell you the NDP’s
reality.
The Premier wants you to believe
that she and her party are, and always
have been, pro-oil.
The Premier believes standing idly
by while two privately funded pipeline
projects are vetoed, but getting one
moving forward with a taxpayer subsidy
of $4.5bn, is a cause for
celebration.
The Premier thinks you should be
as enthusiastic as she is to committing
a further $2bn of Alberta taxpayer
money to help cover overrun on the
project.
This is the UCP’s reality:
We see a Premier who, along with
other NDP MLAs, attends anti-pipeline
protests.
When the Premier came to office
there were three companies looking to
build three oil pipelines worth more
than 30bn in investment.
Now there is just one on taxpayer
life support.
The Premier’s equally
anti-oil Liberal friends cancelled
the Northern
Gateway pipeline and $7.9bn
in jobs and economic
opportunity.
The Premier’s Liberal
friends also killed the
$15.7bn Energy East pipeline.
This would have
replaced dirty oil from nondemocratic
regimes with
cleaner Alberta crude.
The Premier was silent
when her Liberal friends did
Luke Reinhardt as Bert, and Kaitlynn Kern as
Mary Poppins in the Three Hills Arts Academy
Society presentation of the Disney and Cameron
Macintosh production of Mary Poppins. Arts
Academy director Marilyn Sept said the society
was happy that so many attended one of the
ten presentations, staged from late May to
early June on the Prairie College campus.
Director Sammantha Reinhardt’s program
notes indicate that the production involved 36
actors—ranging in age from 8 to 60—and eight
technicians. While they put in 140 rehearsal
hours, 100 hours went to costume preparation
and another 125 hours was given to set and
lighting considerations.

The UCP reality is that
due to these actions investor
confidence in Alberta and
its oil is dead.
$36bn in capital has left
Alberta. Companies such as
ConocoPhillips and Shell
have withdrawn to other
jurisdictions such as North
Kazakhstan.
In total 14 Multinationals
have now brokered deals to
Medication and injury risk:
what you should know
Generally, the need for medication
increases with age, as health problems
become more likely to occur as we
grow older. However, certain types of
medication have side effects, many of
which increase the risk of accidents
such as slips and falls.
Common Culprits
Several drugs are known to
increase the risk of slips and falls for
a number of reasons: they reduce
alertness, interfere with balance or
cause a drop in blood pressure when
getting up from a seated or lying
down position. Common culprits
include:
• Psychotropic drugs (e.g. sleeping
pills, antipsychotics, anxiolytics,
opioid analgesics, antidepressants)
• Heart medication
• Anticonvulsants
• Anti-diabetic medication
• Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories
(e.g. ibuprofen, naproxen)
Additionally, the more medication
you take, the greater the risk of slips
and falls, as drug interactions
increase the potential for side effects.
How To Prevent Accidents
To prevent slips and falls caused by
medication side effects, it’s important
to periodically go over the list of drugs
you take (prescribed or otherwise)
with your doctor. It’s often possible to
either progressively reduce your
intake of certain medications, opt for
varieties with fewer side effects, or
adopt alternative solutions, such as
reducing your dosage
of anxiety medication in favour of
relaxation exercises.
Never stop taking your medication
because you’re scared of falling. On
the contrary, it’s essential that you
follow the dosage assigned to you by
your doctor. Abruptly ending or
altering your medication intake can
actually increase the risk of accidents
such as slips and falls. Always consult
your doctor.
Advice for women
with thinning hair
While more commonly observed among
men, hair loss can also affect women. With
age, many women notice their hair thinning
and becoming increasingly scarce. So, how do
you maintain a full head of beautiful hair?
Read on for some tips.
THE RIGHT CUT
Keeping your hair long accentuates the
stringy appearance of thinning hair, while cutting
it too short may reveal bald spots. Hence,
it’s best to keep your hair short (but not too
short!) or medium-length for more volume
and movement. Avoid flat, single-length
styles at all costs. A structured cut (that complements
your facial features, of course!) is
your best bet. Wide bangs are also a clever
option to help camouflage the look of thinning
hair.
THE PERFECT STYLE
If your hair is thinning around your temples,
avoid tying it back. Instead, use stylish
Are you hydrated enough?
Constipation, loss of balance,
dementia, uncontrolled blood
sugar — dehydration is a
serious health problem commonly
observed among the
elderly. Why? With age, the
body’s ability to feel thirst and
retain water diminishes.
Furthermore, age-related
Put your health first and listen to music
Studies have shown that listening to
music has many health benefits, especially
for the elderly. In fact, not only
does it contribute to lower stress levels
and improved sleep, but it also reinforces
the immune system. Keep
reading to find out more.
SLEEP
Seniors who listen to soft music for
45 minutes before bed fall asleep faster,
sleep for longer, stir less during the night
and benefit from all-around more energizing
sleep.
Why? Music affects our
accessories like a scarf tucked behind the ears
or a barrette to create the illusion of sideswept
bangs. Is the top of your head balding?
Carefully tease your hair at the roots and tie it
back into a voluminous ponytail or twist it into
a bun. Do you have curly hair? Let your curls
hang loose for natural looking volume!
THE IDEAL COLOUR
The darker your hair colour, the greater the
contrast with your scalp, making the latter
more visible. Don’t forget that skin can burn
when exposed to the sun and that people
with very light hair have particularly vulnerable
scalps. In short, a dye job between
medium brown and dark blonde is your best
bet for keeping your hair looking full and
healthy.
One last tip: to keep your locks looking their
very best at every age, visit a professional
hairstylist.
issues such as incontinence and
reduced mobility can also
lower the amount of fluids
ingested overall.
To prevent dehydration, make
sure to:
• Drink 1.5 to 2 litres of fluids
each day (water, milk, juice,
etc.). Tip: always keep a glass of
parasympathetic nervous system, which
slows our heart rate and breathing —
much like when you get ready for bed.
Hence, by relaxing the body, music can
actually prepare it for sleep.
STRESS
Researchers at McGill University’s
Psychology Department found that music
can be more effective than prescription
drugs for reducing anxiety in adults
before surgery. The study also demonstrated
that listening to music helps
reduce cortisol levels (a stress hormone)
in the body.
News release
Clearview and Red Deer College
have partnered up to provide additional
training and supports for
Clearview’s Educational Assistants,
building even more capacity to support
students.
Five Educational Assistants successfully
They included Pat Ough, Boban
The course was entitled
“Introduction to Classroom
to pursue their Educational
Assistant (EA) Certificate, this
course will be counted as one credit
towards it.
Clearview’s Educational
Assistants had five full days with a
Red Deer College instructor.
For three out of the five class
dates, the EAs came together with
the instructor at Red Deer College
during Clearview’s scheduled professional
development days.
“We are delighted that our
Educational Assistants had this
learning opportunity with Red
Deer College,” said Grant Gosse,
Director of Inclusive Learning.
“This has provided us the opportunity
to build capacity with our
Educational Assistants enabling
them to continue the excellent support
they provide to our students on
a daily basis. Staff are the first
resource in ensuring Clearview
students succeed.”
Duplicity
Cont’d from Pg 7
While I strongly believe environmental
concerns with the pipeline
have been addressed, I can appreciate
their view of duplicity on the
part of Prime Minister Trudeau.
Third, that sense of betrayal
extends amongst many Indigenous
people who believed Trudeau when
he campaigned on the promise of
positive politics and inclusiveness.
A member of the Tsleil-Waututh
Nation in North Vancouver is
quoted in the Ottawa Citizen as
saying “This is the moment in history
where Justin Trudeau has
revealed that he never cared about
Indigenous rights or
reconciliation.”
While this view is not universal,
many do believe this is yet again
another broken promise.
Lastly, New Brunswickers are
having a hard time understanding
why the Government considers
Trans Mountain to be in the
national interest while they were
responsible for the demise of
Energy East.
The mayor of St. John’ s valid
arguments regarding the importance
of Energy East to both his
province’s and the Canadian
economy did nothing to convince
the Liberal government.
I sincerely wish that these many
clouds would clear in the coming
weeks so we may celebrate the completion
of Trans Mountain.
Unfortunately, I remain very skeptical
about sunny days ahead.
Remember the last time
you had a cold or the flu?
It was pretty
miserable. You
sneezed, coughed
and had no energy.
But there’s an easy
way to avoid all
that: Just join
Kid Scoop’s
SCRUB SQUAD.
HOW TO JOIN: You join automatically
every time you wash your hands!
Rub your hands together under
warm running water. Make sure
to get wet up to your wrists.
Use a generous amount of soap.
Liquid soap, powdered soap or
bar soap are all great.
SCRUB: Get the palms, back
of your hands, wrists, under
your nails and between your
fingers for at least 20 seconds.
Rinse your hands to get rid of
the soap (and dirt and germs).
Air dry your hands or use
a clean towel, either cloth
or paper.
When should I wash my hands?
• after playing DISTOUE
• after using the STROMORE
• before eating or KONCOGI
• after petting SANIMLA
• before and after visiting a sick DRFNEI
• after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing
• after taking out the RATHS
certification.
Following graduation from
Grant MacEwan, Margaret
went to work at the City of
Edmonton downtown library
where she was employed for
many years.
Margaret was an avid reader,
making short work of even the
largest books.
She loved cats, not just as
pets, but as artwork, wall hangings
and constant Facebook
postings.
She loved visits to Jasper, and
especially enjoyed watching car
racing.
Margaret’s health started to
decline in 2013, and after an
extended hospital stay she was
relocated to St. Joseph’s where
she resided till her passing.
Her life was such a gift to us
to make arrangements.
In lieu of flowers or gifts,
we’re asking that contributions
your prayers. Thank you so
much.
If you ate today, you
should thank a farmer
by Rick Strankman MLA,
Drumheller Stettler
On June 8th recognition of the
people we count on for our daily bread
will happen. For more than seven
decades Farmers’ Day has been recognized
and celebrated in rural
communities across the province and
by our agricultural industry.
Farmers’ Day was first established
at the UFA’s annual convention in
1945.
The co-operative passed a resolution
to lobby the Alberta government to
“”declare the second Friday of June as
a provincial holiday.””
Although no longer a provincial holiday,
the United Farmers of Alberta
co-operative has chosen to continue to
celebrate this day by acknowledging
the hard work and contribution of
Alberta’s farmers and Ranchers.
The business of farming and
ranching is not an easy vocation by
any stretch of the imagination.
Commodity prices, non capped electrical
prices, droughts, fires, and other
weather-related issues are far beyond
their control.
What they also haven’t been able to
control is the NDP government’s love
for ideological-based legislation.
Their crippling carbon tax severely
hampers their ability to compete on
provincial and international levels.
Farmers and ranchers are not, as
many people seem to believe, exempt
from the carbon tax. Farmers are
greatly impacted by the tax on everything,
a tax the NDP government did
not campaign on.
Costs continue to soar; expenses
such as transportation costs go up for
the trucks and trains that ship the
grain, crops, and livestock to consumers
around the world.
Those costs will have to be absorbed
by the producers or passed on to the
consumer, leading to rises in food
costs at grocery stores and
restaurants.
The business of agriculture provides
life’s necessities, including food,
clothing, and shelter, and we should all
be grateful for what farmers do.
Farmers’ Day is a significant day to
honour and celebrate those in the agricultural
community, who work
tirelessly throughout the year.
Farming and ranching is not just an
occupation, it’s a way of life for the
people that dedicate themselves to this
noble pursuit.
Canadian and American primary
food production technologies are world
leading. The new innovative developments
in agriculture are using near
space age technology.
Global positioning technology
allows precision placement of seed, fertilizer,
chemicals and even water thru
electronically controlled environmental
monitoring systems.
Technological advancements using
computer based programs allow
modern farm managers remote operation
and even allow crop growth
sensing.
Unfortunately many other countries
aren’t blessed with this leading innovation
but benefit by adopting some of
the more affordable technology that is
available today.
There’s a lot to be thankful for when
it comes to how the agriculture
industry makes our lives better.
If you have access to a nutritious
diet that promotes good health, thank
a farmer.
If you benefit from an economy that
gets a significant contribution from
agriculture, thank a farmer.
If you wear any of the
multitudes of high quality
agricultural based textiles,
thank a farmer.
ECA Review/T.Huxley
Desperate to recast
themselves as pro-oil
Cont’d from Pg 7
The only reality upon
which the NDP and the UCP
can agree is the imperative
that Alberta, indeed
Canada, gets coastal access
for its oil reserves.
Hence, the NDP are now
desperate to recast themselves
as pro-oil and are
determined to ensure the
Trans Mountain project
goes ahead by any means.
Similarly, Trudeau’s
Liberals, totally against
their instincts, are desperate
to “rescue” this
pipeline project.
Imagine my schadenfreude
in seeing political
opponents forced to celebrate
something they
ideologically, and physically,
oppose.
These paradoxical public
displays are the very definition
of “Making a virtue out
of a necessity”
The UCPs reality is that
we have no confidence that
the Liberals and NDP can
see this through. Their
hearts are clearly not in the
project.
We believe that measures
must be taken to keep the
prospect of a coastal pipeline
alive.
These measures include:
Passing of Bill S-245
declaring all Trans
Mountain project activity to
be the sole jurisdiction of the
Federal Government.
Suspend transfer of $4.1bn
and 1.3bn from Federal
Government to B.C. NDP
until they end their campaign
of obstruction.
Withhold the $182m earmarked
for B.C. under the
“Low Carbon Economy
Fund” until the pipeline is
built.
Pull Bill C-69 and C-48
both of which impede the
ability to get Alberta
resources to market.
Will any of this happen? I
am not convinced.
Government has a poor
record in managing its own
operations, and a horrific
one stewarding commercial
and industrial enterprises.
No wonder they are now
spinning hard in an attempt
to “Make a virtue out of a
necessity”.
However, despite my
understandable skepticism,
I truly hope we do get a pipeline
to tidewaters.
I always have and will
continue to cheer for
Alberta and our energy
industry.
