The old adage “good things come<br />

in small packages” might seem<br />

an odd way to describe an<br />

institution of higher learning, but it’s an<br />

accurate assessment of Albion College.<br />

With just 1,600 students, Albion is<br />

smaller than many suburban high<br />

schools. Yet this private liberal arts school<br />

founded 175 years ago 90 miles west of<br />

<strong>Detroit</strong> by early Methodist settlers is<br />

consistently ranked a top college by U.S.<br />

News <strong>and</strong> World Report, <strong>the</strong> Princeton<br />

Review <strong>and</strong> Forbes. It also has maintained<br />

long ties with <strong>the</strong> DAC.<br />

Fulbright scholars, prominent<br />

surgeons, politicians, professors,<br />

authors, <strong>the</strong> former Michigan<br />

Superintendent of Public<br />

Instruction <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> recently<br />

retired chairman of Newsweek,<br />

who was <strong>the</strong> commencement<br />

speaker last spring.<br />

“It’s a challenging time for<br />

higher education with funding cutbacks<br />

but we’re growing <strong>the</strong> college <strong>and</strong> dealing<br />

with <strong>the</strong> financial aspects of <strong>the</strong><br />

recession,” said Stephen Greenhalgh, a<br />

Club member since 1983 <strong>and</strong> an Albion<br />

trustee with deep ties to <strong>the</strong> school.<br />
