A philanthropist <strong>and</strong> chairman<br />

of Metropolitan United Methodist<br />

Church of <strong>Detroit</strong>, Stanley was <strong>the</strong><br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r of Bruce Kresge, a DAC<br />

member in <strong>the</strong> 1950s. Board<br />

chairman of <strong>the</strong> Kresge<br />

Foundation, Bruce Kresge was an<br />

Albion graduate <strong>and</strong> a trustee like<br />

his fa<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

A prestigious honors program at<br />

<strong>the</strong> college is named for ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

illustrious DAC member of old.<br />

Among Albion’s half dozen<br />

institutes, centers <strong>and</strong> programs, <strong>the</strong><br />

Prentiss M. Brown Honors Program,<br />

named for <strong>the</strong> late U.S. Senator<br />

instrumental in <strong>the</strong> building of <strong>the</strong><br />

Mackinac Bridge, was dedicated in 2004<br />

in a ceremony attended by his son. A<br />

native of St. Ignace, Brown was chairman<br />

of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Detroit</strong> Edison Company <strong>and</strong> a<br />

Club member from 1945-54.<br />

Brown Honors program students have<br />

won awards including a National Science<br />

Foundation research grant <strong>and</strong> a number<br />

of Fulbright fellowships.<br />

“We’ve got academic programs intact<br />

<strong>and</strong> growing,” said Greenhalgh, a 1974<br />

Albion graduate. “We’ve introduced a<br />

career readiness model to prepare students<br />

for <strong>the</strong> working world. We have full<br />

professors dedicated to teaching <strong>and</strong><br />

input from clergy that helps us fulfill <strong>the</strong><br />

spiritual heritage of <strong>the</strong> college.<br />

“Our students become successful in<br />

many o<strong>the</strong>rs have excelled in business <strong>and</strong><br />

so on.”<br />

Greenhalgh’s family has several<br />

connections to <strong>the</strong> school near historic<br />

Marshall. Both of his parents are alumni<br />

<strong>and</strong> a relative on his fa<strong>the</strong>r’s side, Samuel<br />

Dickie, a Methodist minister, was “one of<br />

<strong>the</strong> most influential presidents <strong>the</strong> college<br />

ever had,” serving from 1901-21.<br />

“Some students thrive in a smaller<br />

environment; that’s what appealed to<br />

me,” said Greenhalgh, a partner in <strong>the</strong><br />

downtown <strong>Detroit</strong> law firm Bodman<br />

LLC. “You knew all of <strong>the</strong> professors. I<br />

wasn’t a Big 10 quality athlete but I could<br />

play baseball <strong>the</strong>re.”<br />

Today Greenhalgh serves on <strong>the</strong><br />

Albion Board with ano<strong>the</strong>r alumnus <strong>and</strong><br />

DAC member, Dan Musser, president of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gr<strong>and</strong> Hotel on Mackinac Isl<strong>and</strong>.<br />
