Electrical work
un-permitted
RICHARD GILBERT
STAFF WRITER
C
ontractors operating
in the underground
economy are under-
taking more than one-third
of all residential electrical
installations in B.C.
Late last month, the BC
Safety Authority (BCSA)
released its fourth annual
State of Safety Report 2007.
According to the report, an
increasing amount of work
in B.C. is being done without
a permit.
“A m aj o r c o n c e r n d e t a i l e d
in the 2006 State of Safety
Report was electrical work
performed without a permit,
and un-permitted work
continued to be an issue in
2007,” said the report.
“Overall construction
activity was very high
throughout the province in
2007, leading to a shortage
Stephen Hinde, provincial
electrical safety manager
with the BCSA, uses the
term grey market to describe
a market where a contractor
sometimes operates illegally,
and at other times legally.
He said there has been
an increase in greymarket
activity, due to a booming
construction industry and
a shortage of qualified elec-
trical contractors.
is situation has created
a problem for homeowners,
who find it extremely difficult
to find contractors to do
work.
General contractors also
need to be aware of this
problem, when hiring subcontractors
to do a small
part of a job.
Effectiveness of unions in Canada criticized
RICHARD GILBERT
STAFF WRITER
A
survey released by Canadian
LabourWatch Association
found unions are irrelevant
and their leaders out of touch, but
one union leader believes this view
of the results is biased and distorted.
LabourWatch hired Nanos
Research to conduct a telephone
survey of 1,000 employed Canadians
Labour
between July 27th and Aug. 6th.
One of the most important findings
of the Nanos survey is that 77
per cent of non-unionized working
Canadians are not interested in being
unionized.
e survey also found that more
than 25 per cent of currently unionized
respondents said they would
prefer not to be unionized, if given
the choice.
Newsroom Reno
RICHARD GILBERT
The BC redevelopment (front) involves the construction of a 3 storey, 4,000 sq ft
newsroom that allows the public to view the newsroom and studios from the street and
from inside the new entrance. The construction manager is Scott Construction Group,
the project manager is MKT Developments Group Inc. and the developer is Concord
Pacific. Construction is scheduled to be finished by fall 2009. The $82 million dollar
T.V Towers project (back) involves the construction of two residential high-rise buildings.
The owner and construction manager is Concord Pacific Group Inc. and the
architect is IBI/HB Architects. The project is scheduled for completion this year.
“ese results speak for themselves”
said John Mortimer, president
of LabourWatch.
“Union leader positions on a
range of issues are contributing to
this continuing slide in both interest
and actual union representation.”
A spokesperson for union workers
in Alberta has a very different
interpretation of the survey commissioned
by LabourWatch.
“It (LabourWatch) is a who’s who
of anti-labour organizations that
exists to undermine unions and
get them off work sites,” said Gil
McGowan, president of the Alberta
Federation of Labour.
“When you look at this poll, you
must consider the source. is is a
laughable group that must not be
taken seriously.”
