WELCOME
GILLINGHAM & SHAFTESBURY GUIDE
Welcome to our June 2018 Issue.
Wow is the year catching up with us, by our next issue, all our GCSE students
and most A’Level students will have finished their exams and started well
deserved holidays. We wish them all good luck and do your best! Has the
time gone quickly from when they were toddlers and just looking to start
school. If you are thinking of child care and schooling take a look at Topsie Rabbit (pg 27)
or read about the great start to the term at St Mary the Virgin, Early Years Unit (pg 24).
Friendship is so important to us all and particularly at the moment with mental health
issues so much in the news. Is it that hard just to say hello to someone who looks on their
own. Amity on pg 16 offer friendship as a group and for those who would like to join
others go along to the monthly Peer Group run by Amanda (pg 27). Please also remember
that the Great Get Together which is happening all over the Country and inspired by the
lovely Jo Cox has one venue on the Meadow in Gillingham on 24 June (pg29)
Our charity focus this month is on Jane Stokes (pg 20) who is selling her CD of beautiful
harp music for charity. Jane is quite inspirational and proves that you can reach your goals
and ambitions no matter what hurdles are thrown in your way. The cd music is hauntingly
nostalgic and would make a wonderful present and background for some quiet time.
Thanks to Steve Hawkins for capturing one of our recent gorgeous sunsets. Take a look at
his advert (pg 22) for a competition to submit your own photo. A reminder that our cutoff
date for events and advertising is the 10th of June for the July issue and community or
charitable events are free of advertising charges. We are coming to a busy social time and
we are limited to space so get them in early.
Shaftesbury Will Host England’s Third-Biggest Fringe Following Record Registrations
Shaftesbury Fringe organisers say that the three-day event is now England’s third-largest open-access arts
festival, based on performance numbers. When artist registration closed , 139 separate performances had been
booked, an increase from 83 events offered in 2017. Only Brighton and Manchester offer larger fringe festivals
in England with more performances. Shaftesbury Fringe founder Andy Tebbutt-
Russell says “once a fringe festival reaches a certain size, then word gets out and
more acts come forward”.
This year a significant number of comedians have registered, including Australian
stand-up Heidi Regan. Heidi won the BBC’s ‘New Comedy’ award in 2017. New
additions for the 2018 Shaftesbury Fringe include a free childrens’ hub in the Abbey
Gardens on Saturday 30th June. Critically acclaimed children’s theatre company
Paddleboat will headline a programme of shows, activities and events designed
especially for kids aged between 4 and 12 years of age.
Shaftesbury Fringe takes place across 25 venues, ranging from an estate agents
office to a coaching inn, a hidden walled-garden and an Abbey founded in the 9th
century. Each of the venues is within walking distance of all other performances
spaces.
Andy says the timing of the event is critical. “It’s one month before Edinburgh and that allows comedians to
test their new material in Shaftesbury. Stand-ups can’t rehearse alone, at home. They need an audience to
gauge which material is funny. That’s why the timing of Shaftesbury Fringe is perfect,” he says.
The event is being held from Friday 29th June to Sunday 1st July 2018.
Meet The Consultants
Charlene
Charlene Higgins consultant for the 2 group's in Shaftesbury since November 2014. During her time as a
consultant she has helped hundreds of ladies and gentlemen reach their goal weight and healthier BMI.
She started her career after losing over 15 stone. Having been informed, after developing cellulitus that she
must lose weight, in order to live to see her now 5yr old become a 10yr old. She says
joining Slimming World is the best thing she could have done. Losing 8 stone in 1 year
was a huge boost to her confidence. She married in 2014 and had her second child in
2015, all whilst following the slimming world food optimising plan. Charlene struggled
to maintain a healthy pregnancy weight but in the last year has lost 9 stone since her
once 27 stone self.
Her group's in Shaftesbury are going from strength to strength each year, supporting
nearly 400 ladies and gentlemen to reach their dream weight. She has achieved many
awards such as best group with highest weight losses per week and her proudest
awards which are to be awarded silver status for both group's too. Her parting words
are "take a chance, meet new friends and achieve great things with slimming world”
Connie
My name is Connie Sapsford. I joined Slimming World in January 2015 2months after having my oldest son
as my weight had increased a lot. I’ve lost around 6stone up to now and that has also
included my second pregnancy, I followed the plan the whole way through it.
I become a consultant in November 2017 in Tisbury at the Hinton Hall on Thursday at
5:30pm and 7:30pm starting with a small group and growing it. In January 2018 I
decided to fully concentrate my work time on members so made the decision to take
on my second group. I took over the Wednesday 5:30pm and 7:30pm group at the
Vicarage School Rooms, Gillingham.
The members and other consultants have been so amazing and supportive that together
we have been increasing our group losses every single week to help members
reach their dreams.
My name is Charlie Westcar. My first journey with Slimming World as a member starting in July 2015, setting
my target along with my consultant at 2stone 13lbs. With help from my consultant and fellow members I
celebrated that Christmas by reaching my target. Even as a target member I continued
to Attend the Mere Group And was delighted to be voted Woman of the Year in
2016.
My second journey started when I decided to become a consultant and help other
people feel the motivation, confidence and fantastic feeling that I had when achieving
my target. You can find me at the Gillingham am group on a Tuesday at 9.30am in
the Vicarage School Rooms and the Wincanton groups on Wednesday at 10am,
5pm & 7pm at the Memorial Hall.
With the help of the members and fellow consultants, our groups have flourished and
now achieve fantastic weight losses and members reaching their dream weight on a
regular basis. Please come along and try any of our Slimming World groups where you will receive a warm
and friendly welcome. You wonʼt regret it and you will lose weight and meet friends along the way
AMITY
…..where friendship matters
ABOUT AMITY
Amity (which means friendship) was founded in 2008. Formerly the WI, it was decided to form an
autonomous club where our local interests could be better served, especially for fundraising.
This means that ALL the fundraising by Amity now go directly to our chosen charity.
Whilst we cover the areas of The Donheads, Charlton, Ludwell and the Coombes, our membership is
open to all and some of our members come from much further afield.
MEETINGS
Meetings take place on the second Thursday of the month at the
Donhead St Mary village hall, from 2.30 – 4.30pm. Generally there is a talk, followed by a sumptuous
tea and a chance to chat with everyone.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES
To be a diverse group of women who meet each month to foster friendship and companionship
within our village communities. To widen our horizons by introducing a variety of speakers and subjects
to our members. To support local charities and/or local organisations through fundraising
events.
FEES
Annual Membership £18.00
Afternoon Tea (members) £1.00
Afternoon Tea (guests) £2.00
Afternoon tea - includes a selection of sandwiches and cake along with choice of tea or coffee.
NEW MEMBERS
If you are new to the area, you will receive a warm welcome at Amity. Alternatively, you may have
attended one or more of our meetings either as a visitor or a guest in the past and would like to
come back again. Perhaps it’s something you have been meaning to do for a while but never got
round to it. Well, there’s no better time to become a member. If you would like to see if Amity is
for you, we would be delighted if you would contact any one of the people below who will arrange
to bring you and introduce you to everyone, rather than arriving on your own.
SHOULD I BECOME A MEMBER?
If you enjoy meeting people
If you would like to broaden your knowledge and enjoy a good tea
If you would like to go on group excursions and theatre trips
If you would like the satisfaction of helping to raise money for local charities and your community
Then you are just the person we are waiting to welcome
Jane Stokes—Mere Mortal
Local musician, Jane Stokes, has achieved a long-held
ambition of recording her first album of Harp music. Jane,
who lives in Child Okeford, plays fourteen tracks of varied
music from the repertoire for Celtic harp. Much of the music
Jane plays is from the folk tradition, though some of the
recordings are classical and a couple are written by Jane
herself.
Jane was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis some time ago,
so it is unsurprising that all profits from the sale of these recordings will go to the MS Society
to help further research into this debilitating and incurable condition.
Jane’s album, “Mere Mortal”, can be heard on
https://janestokes.bandcamp.com/. The CD, which costs £10, or
more if you wish to donate, can be ordered from the website, or
digitally downloaded.
This wonderfully tart jam goes well with scones
and cream and makes a lovely filling for a
Victoria Sponge cake
Makes: 2 jars (approximately)
Preparation and cooking time: 1 hour
A cooking thermometer is necessary for this recipe.
Also jam jars and a saucer. The saucer should be
placed in the freezer to keep it cold.
Ingredients
900g Slightly under-ripe gooseberries, topped and tailed
900g-1kg Granulated sugar
600ml water
Method
First wash your jam jars in hot soapy water, then rinse
well. Put them into a preheated oven at 160°C/gas 3
until you are ready to use them.
Put the fruit and water only into a large, heavy-based
saucepan. Bring to the boil, then simmer gently until the
skins are soft. If you add the sugar the skins will not
soften.
Add the sugar and stir over a low heat until it has
dissolved completely. Don't boil the jam before the
sugar has dissolved or it may crystallise during storage.
Once the sugar has dissolved bring the jam to a rapid
but steady boil and boil until it reaches a temperature of
between 105°C and 110°C.
After about 15 minutes your jam should have become
more viscous and clear and you will need to see
whether setting point has been reached. This is called
the ‘wrinkle test’. Remove the saucer from the freezer.
Take the pan off the heat, spoon a little jam onto the
plate and leave until completely cold. Then push it
across the plate with your forefinger. It should wrinkle
up if it’s ready. If it only wrinkles slightly, pop the saucer
back in the freezer and bring the jam back to the boil
and boil for a few more minutes.
Skim any scum from the top of the jam and pour it into
the prepared jars. Cover
the surface of the jam with
waxed discs, wax-side
down, and either quickly
cover each jar with a
dampened round of
cellophane and rubber
band or leave to go cold
before covering with
cellophane or a screw-top
lid. Sealing the jars well
prevents the build-up of
condensation under the
lid, which could lead to
mould.
Early Learning
The children in our Outstanding Early Years Unit have
had an exciting start to the summer term. Both our
Reception Class and Shooting Stars Nursery have had
visits from 8 day old lambs kindly brought in by in by a
local farmer. The children were able to ask lots of
questions, feed and stroke the lambs. We have also
had eggs which we have incubated in school and have
hatched 4 beautiful chicks which will stay with us until
they return back to the same farm as the lambs. Finally
we have tadpoles whose legs have just started to
appear! The children have thoroughly enjoyed the
process and carefully observe them throughout the day
using clipboards and ipads to record their findings. We
are now registering children for our Nursery setting for
September 2018 (2 – 4 year olds). Please call 01747
MermaidsUK takes part in brand new ITV series, Give It A Year Episode 5
MermaidsUK took part in Give It A Year, a brand new ITV series. The company is run by Mother and
Daughter duo, Lisa Bousted and Charlotte Scoins who are both Aquatic Teachers and Tutors. After 18
months of market research, planning and development, Lisa and Charlotte introduced the MermaidsUK
Instructor Course to the aquatic industry, allowing the Level 2 Swimming teacher to train up as a
MermaidsUK Instructor. This resulted in new business’s being set up around the UK and more recently
worldwide. Swimschool @Riversmeet, saw the many physical and social benefits of Mermaiding and have
MermaidsUK Instructors offering Mermaid Parties, Mermaid Experiences & Mermaid Swim Courses offers
Mermaid Sessions for children and Mermaid Experiences and Mermaid Parties on request.
In this brand new series, Baroness Karren Brady meets the brave people who decide to go it alone and
start a new business. While many take off, every year in the UK 30,000 start-up businesses fail. This
unique take on business follows the first year for intrepid entrepreneurs - will our fledgling business
owners be dining on caviar and champagne in 12 months’ time? Or will they be eating humble
pie? Through her travels across the UK, Karren meets people who believe they’ve got the next big
thing. Some ideas are weird and whacky, others are literally out of this world, but all these fledgling
business people hope their venture will change their lives and their fortunes. She’ll want to know as much
about their hopes and dreams as she does about the sales figures. This business show is as much about
the people and personalities as it is the profit and loss sheet.
She’ll meet all these people at the start of their first year. Then in an instant,
it’ll be 12 months later and she’ll discover what can happen when you Give
it a Year. For further details on your local MermaidsUK sessions, you can
Shelter from the Storm by Rik Lonsdale
I hate this kind of rain, it reminds me of that day when I had just turned sixteen.
It was a Tuesday. A Tuesday in June. You told me you weren’t doing anything much
that day and I could call and see you if I wished. You knew I wished very much to come
and call on you, you knew I had been hoping to see you alone for months. So I showered
and washed my hair and dressed as well as I could and set off for your house. I had to
catch two buses and then walk the half mile length of the lane you lived in.
Eventually I arrived, smoothed down my hair and rang your door bell.
‘Trisha? She’s not here, love, gone into town with some friends, she’ll be out all day.
I don’t expect to see her before five.’ Your mother had a kind voice and looked at me as if
she knew I had been fooled. I didn’t accept the drink she offered. I found myself being upset,
lost, angry all at once.
I held it together to give what I hoped was a sincere sounding apology and turned to
walk the four miles home. The heavens opened when I was about fifty yards from your
garden gate and I was soaked to the skin by the time I got to the end of the lane.
I was about a mile from town when I met you coming the other way. The rain hiding
my tears, I could almost ignore you but you caught my eye.
‘What are you doing here, Jamie?’ you said, as if you didn’t know.
But I didn’t answer you. I didn’t speak to you that day. I walked on past. My sixteenyear-old
pride was not so destroyed by you that I would give you any sort of explanation
while you were in the company of Tom. Both of you sheltering under his raincoat. Probably
the only person in the world who would carry a raincoat in June.
The next day you came to see me at school. You wanted to talk. You were conciliatory.
Wanted to make up. I said no. I stood my ground. I held my head high. I wouldn’t be
friends.
‘Go and chat up boring Tom, he’s your type, just leave me alone.’ I said. I hated myself
as I spoke. I hated Tom, I wanted you, I loved
you.
But you went to Tom. You married him instead
of me, had his children.
Yes, I know it was a long time ago, fifty-two
years ago next week. Yes, I know it was stupid.
Yes, I know we were kids. But here we both are,
sheltering from the same rain under this tree.
Where’s Tom’s raincoat now? Buried with him
you say. I’m sorry about that. But I’m not as stupid
as I was then, so will you dance in the rain
with me? Yes, at our age!
