This refresher course is aimed at<br />

experienced conference<br />

interpreters. This year Dr Nolan will<br />

be focusing on interpretation for<br />

international court tribunals as well<br />

as the principles, norms <strong>and</strong><br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>practice</strong> governing the<br />

<strong>interpreting</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession in advanced<br />

VERÓNICA PÉREZ GUARNIERI was<br />

born in Argentina but is also a<br />

Spanish citizen with an EU passport.<br />

She graduated with a Master <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

in Translation <strong>and</strong> Interpretation<br />

from Universidad del Salvador in<br />

1989, which is equivalent to the<br />

Licenciatura en Interpretación de<br />

Conferencias <strong>and</strong> Traductorado<br />

Público. She has worked for almost<br />

twenty years as a free-lance<br />

interpreter <strong>and</strong> translator for many<br />

government agencies, embassies<br />

<strong>and</strong> multinationals.<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> her assignments included<br />

<strong>interpreting</strong> for President Clinton<br />

<strong>and</strong> his wife <strong>and</strong> British Prime<br />

Minister Tony Blair, among many<br />

others. Currently she is Regional<br />

Treasurer <strong>of</strong> AIIC, AIIC VEGA <strong>and</strong><br />

Member <strong>of</strong> the Interpretation<br />

Committee <strong>of</strong> the Certified<br />

Translators Association <strong>of</strong> Buenos<br />

Aires <strong>and</strong> Corresponding member<br />

<strong>of</strong> AIIC Brazil.<br />

HANS-WERNER MÜHLE holds a<br />

Diplom Dolmetscher (equivalent to<br />

an M.A. in Interpreting) from the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Heidelberg, <strong>and</strong> he is a<br />

qualified Opera Singer (Heidelberg<br />

High <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Music) <strong>and</strong> voice<br />

coach.<br />

He has done <strong>interpreting</strong> work for<br />

the European Parliament, UNESCO,<br />

the African Union Summit, the<br />

Speaker <strong>of</strong> the German Parliament,<br />

the Summer Olympics in Athens <strong>and</strong><br />

several other high pr<strong>of</strong>ile<br />

organisations <strong>and</strong> events. He has<br />

more than 3000 days’ experience as<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional conference interpreter.<br />

He lectures at the Heidelberg<br />

<strong>School</strong> for Translators <strong>and</strong><br />

Interpreters in Germany <strong>and</strong> has<br />

been a visiting lecturer at a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> universities, including Winterthur,<br />

Switzerl<strong>and</strong>, as well as the University<br />

<strong>of</strong> La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain.<br />

This course is aimed at pr<strong>of</strong>essional interpreters. The aim is to improve<br />

participants’ grasp <strong>of</strong> the principles <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>practice</strong> which govern<br />

the <strong>interpreting</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession in intermediate conference <strong>interpreting</strong> contexts.<br />

Participants enhance their conference preparation techniques <strong>and</strong><br />

terminology management, as well as improving their ability to assess the<br />

<strong>interpreting</strong> process <strong>and</strong> apply <strong>interpreting</strong> coping tactics. Participants carry<br />

out conference <strong>interpreting</strong> <strong>practice</strong> in the simultaneous mode (including<br />

simultaneous <strong>interpreting</strong> with text). Participants who receive a Certificate <strong>of</strong><br />

Competence may receive credit for one module in the Honours/ MA in<br />

wishing to lay the correct<br />

foundation for their work, we focus<br />

on the principles <strong>and</strong> <strong>practice</strong><br />

governing the <strong>interpreting</strong><br />

advanced liaison <strong>and</strong> consecutive<br />

<strong>interpreting</strong> contexts. Monolingual<br />
