JAMES NOLAN has served as
Deputy Director of the
Interpretation, Meetings and
Publishing Division of the United
Nations, Head of Linguistic and

International Tribunal for the Law of

Interpreter, and Linguist/Legal Writer
with The Garden City Group. A
graduate of the School of
Translation and Interpretation of the
University of Geneva and of New
York Law School, Mr. Nolan is
accredited by the interpretation
services of the United Nations, the
European Union, the U.S. State
Department and the Canadian
Government. Mr. Nolan has 30 years
of experience as a translator,
interpreter, language services
manager and trainer. He has given
lectures, courses and seminars on
interpretation at several universities.

This refresher course is aimed at
experienced conference
interpreters. This year Dr Nolan will
be focusing on interpretation for
international court tribunals as well
as the principles, norms and
professional practice governing the
interpreting profession in advanced
conference interpreting contexts.
Participants who receive a
Certificate of Competence may
receive credit for one module in the
Honours/MA in Interpreting. This
course is offered at NQF level 8.

VERÓNICA PÉREZ GUARNIERI was
born in Argentina but is also a
Spanish citizen with an EU passport.
She graduated with a Master of Arts
in Translation and Interpretation
from Universidad del Salvador in
1989, which is equivalent to the
Licenciatura en Interpretación de
Conferencias and Traductorado
Público. She has worked for almost
twenty years as a free-lance
interpreter and translator for many
government agencies, embassies
and multinationals.
Some of her assignments included
interpreting for President Clinton
and his wife and British Prime
Minister Tony Blair, among many
others. Currently she is Regional
Treasurer of AIIC, AIIC VEGA and
Member of the Interpretation
Committee of the Certified
Translators Association of Buenos
Aires and Corresponding member
of AIIC Brazil.

HANS-WERNER MÜHLE holds a
Diplom Dolmetscher (equivalent to
an M.A. in Interpreting) from the
University of Heidelberg, and he is a
qualified Opera Singer (Heidelberg
High School of Music) and voice
coach.
He has done interpreting work for
the European Parliament, UNESCO,
the African Union Summit, the
Speaker of the German Parliament,
the Summer Olympics in Athens and
several other high profile
organisations and events. He has
more than 3000 days’ experience as
professional conference interpreter.
He lectures at the Heidelberg
School for Translators and
Interpreters in Germany and has
been a visiting lecturer at a number
of universities, including Winterthur,
Switzerland, as well as the University
of La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain.
This course is aimed at professional interpreters. The aim is to improve
participants’ grasp of the principles and professional practice which govern
the interpreting profession in intermediate conference interpreting contexts.
Participants enhance their conference preparation techniques and
terminology management, as well as improving their ability to assess the
interpreting process and apply interpreting coping tactics. Participants carry
out conference interpreting practice in the simultaneous mode (including
simultaneous interpreting with text). Participants who receive a Certificate of
Competence may receive credit for one module in the Honours/ MA in
Interpreting. This course is offered at NQF level 8.

MICHÈLE BO BRAMSEN has a BA
(Hons) (Philosophy, Politics and
Economics) degree from Oxford
University and a doctorate from the
Sorbonne in Paris. She has worked
as a conference interpreter for
NATO, Europol, the European
Parliament, the OECD, national
industries and private business. She
has lectured in conference
interpretation at the Copenhagen
Business School, Denmark as well as
at the Institut Supérieur de
l’Interprétation et de Traduction
(ISIT), Paris and for the Cambridge
Course in Conference
Interpretation.

In this course, Principles and
Practice of interpreting, aimed at
potential conference interpreters
and experienced practitioners
wishing to lay the correct
foundation for their work, we focus
on the principles and practice
governing the interpreting
profession in a number of
advanced liaison and consecutive
interpreting contexts. Monolingual
and bilingual pre-interpreting skills
are refined and participants
perform liaison interpreting in the
consecutive mode (short and long),
simultaneous interpreting, and sight
interpreting. Participants are also
taught to negotiate mismatched
power relations, as well as to
conduct an interpreting business
ethically and professionally.
