A thriver is a healthy happy person
with a brilliant and productive
future. Thrivers aren’t born this way,
thrivers BECOME this way. A thriver
is someone who has faced adversity,
like we all have, yet, makes a solid
decision to walk away from being a
victim. A thriver realizes that the best
revenge is living a great life. Thus, a
thriver is primed to fiercely chase their
dreams. In fact, a thriver isn’t afraid
to dream, and if he/she is…they ask
for help, knowing that it takes support
from others to help groom oneself
into being a Thriver. Additionally, a
thriver knows that although Life might
not yet look how they want in the
moment…there is still time to make
those dreams manifest. Thrivers come
in all shapes, sizes, ages, genders and
personalities. A thriver proudly wears
a badge of courage and a confidence
that they are worthy of success. A
thriver continues to flourish and grow,
acknowledging that Life is a journey
and not a destination. Thrivers accept
their shortcomings without self
judgment or punishment. A thriver
gives back to the community as they
know, everybody needs a hand from
time to time, just as they did. A thriver
knows they belong to an elite group,
yet, there are no membership fees
and everyone is invited to join the
Thriver Network. Finally, a thriver is
perpetually grateful for having made
the choice to Thrive, and not just
survive.
THRIVE
This column is dedicated to honoring
those who have already stepped into
the Thriver Network. By interviewing
with local Elizabeth people Scarcella who are ready to share
their Survivor-to-Thriver story, it is our
intention and hope to encourage YOU
to join us in the pursuit of creating a
great life. Now, who’s ready to Thrive?

it is. As he say’s, “The rest of my
Recently Max was on LIVE Kelly and
“I love to work-out to this song!”
“It’s so upbeat!”
‘Good Morning’ starts off with this
song for their primeire commercial for
Paving Her Way!
Charissa Farley is an remarkable executive, parent,
entrepreneur, mentor, and nutrition enthusiast.
Her independent spirit and sense of determination
radiates through all she does. As president of Farley
Interlocking Pavingstones, she has lead the design
and installation of custom paving solutions for developers,
builders, HOA’s, contractors, landscapers,
pool companies and homeowners. Her attention to
detail is appreciated by all. She is a brilliant team
leader and puts her heart and soul into the team
and the projects. Charissa’s journeys have forged
her into a woman of resolve. Charissa has lost the
element of fear, an attainment that is driving her to
pave the way into a stronger future! Unafraid of the
process and willing to practice, Charissa shares her
enlightening thoughts with us.
Juli: Charissa, where do you reside during your busy work
week?
Charissa: It’s not at all normal. In theory, I live in Newport
but it never works out that way. Right after I moved, we got
a contract in the central coast and I was several months up
there most of the time. We have a lot of work on the coast so
I use Newport as a base and roll in and out of Los Angeles
and San Diego. My heart and a substantial part of our
operation though, is still here in the desert, so I end up here
a lot, and the cabin at Lake Hemet is a great way to hunker
down with fewer interruptions and do the work that requires
uninterrupted concentration.
Juli: Tell us about your family life.
Charissa: It’s not at all normal (lol). I had hoped these
kids would grow up and be doctors or lawyers or something
with more stability than construction…...but I so love working
with this family, and the rest of the team has been around so
long, they feel like family. My ex-husband and I have worked
together every day and have spent every holiday together
even though we have been divorced for many years. My
daughter, Tieshia is close to the business, just down the street
as an equity manager at Indian Wells Coffee. And my mom
and step-mom are close to the office as well. My daughter,
Jennifer, runs our estimating department. My daughter (from
another mother), Farrah, runs sales. And my youngest, Patrick,
is learning everything else. Kimberly, our residential estimator,
grew up just down road…..a six mile dirt road in Pinyon. And
our Vice President, Hector, and my dearest friend Maria, our
controller, have been with the team so long I feel like they are
a wing of the Farley tribe. With Capi and Michelle in the office,
our foremen who have been with us for years, our field support
guys, and our newly promoted crews, I feel like the company is
evolving into a well-oiled machine. Well, most of the time! We
are spread out throughout Southern California but in a strange
way the work keeps us close.
Juli: You have been extremely busy lately, how do you
balance your time between family and the multiple business
projects going on all at the same time?
Charissa: Balance? We planned to expand the company
from the desert to throughout Southern California and to be
one of the larger commercial contractors emphasizing technical
expertise. Then all of sudden last year, every strategy we
invested in responded…. All at once! A job at the billion dollar
property next to the Del Coronado, Coronado Shores, came in.
Irvine Spectrum, a multi-family project in Los Angeles came in.
Plus, a public school in Covina, a shopping center in Highland,
a Marriott in Goleta, a downtown project in Pismo Beach. Then
there was Downtown Palm Springs, Indian Wells Tennis Gardens,
and Bighorn Country Club….all at once! But we got them
done. And we are extremely proud of our work. And grateful.
And we learned a lot, and pushed to the next level.
Balance is always something that is evolving. It’s more like a
rhythm. I strive to keep a flow that continually pushes hard, but
is joyful in the process. The key word is strive. It isn’t always

you push yourself to the day’s limits. Breathe, stretch, and release
simultaneously. It’s yoga practice; not yoga perfect. We
start from where we are. It also helps that many of the places
I work in Southern California are beautiful. I feel like I’m on
vacation if I let the day’s stress go…….I sneak in a bike ride,
a kayak, a hike, a sunset, a beautiful meal, a glass of wine,
or just great music while working at the computer and a fluffy
bed. It turns a grueling travel schedule into a mini-vacation almost
every day. Most of the time, it creates a work/life rhythm
that flows into something which feels like joyful productivity.
Its practice not perfect!
Juli: You have not only built an empire but your body rocks!
What is your workout and food routine?
Charissa: Ha! It’s a struggle. I have trained for certain goals
over the years, but now, I’m a little older and my obsession
is more about getting Farley Pavers from a successful entrepreneurial
entity to a professionally managed firm that will
be able to sustain economic change and provide for the the
next generation. The challenge is to figure out what you don’t
know and do what you aren’t good at. Having said that,
it’s all in vain if you fall apart in the process. I’ve lost some
dear friends along the way. And the thought, “do not waste
this life”, is always in my psyche. But what does that mean?
Have fun? Achieve something? Drink the wine? Fast? Climb
a mountain? Draft the strategic plan? In the words of my exhusband….”You
just want everything”. And yes, I do. What’s
wrong with that? But sometimes you also need to just sleep.
You’re going to regret asking about food. If the strategic plan
is an obsession….. Food is the other one. But it’s more than
what it seems. I love to cook, I love the farmer’s market (Saks,
the Palm Springs Airport, and the farmer’s market are my
favorite places in the desert). I love wild foods. And I love to
forage wild foods…...but all plants. I went “plant based” at
midnight on my birthday almost a year ago, and it is something
I am extremely proud of.
Throughout the last 20 years I have randomly trained for different
goals but now my goal is to elevate the business from a
successful entrepreneurial activity of a professionally managed
firm that can sustain economic instability. Just when you think
you’ve figured out the maze they move the cheese. And I’m
getting older. So with working out it’s not a routine with my
crazy schedule but how do I try to get something physical into
my day as many days as possible. I swim, bike, jog, walk,
train at the gym, kayak. Just anything I can. My ex asked me
about using a trainer and said, “when will you be trained?”. I
guess I am now.
Anyone who knows me read the food part of your question
and groaned out loud. Food is my other obsession, but in a
deeply personal way. As I said earlier, I’ve lost more than a
few people I was very close to; and it has impacted me deeply.
I sat on the board of Desert Cancer Foundation for many years
as well. I had an epiphany in the middle of the night on my
birthday almost a year ago. There is so much data coming at
us that you hear random information and you see documentaries
like “Food, Inc.”, “What the Health”, “Plant Pure Nation”,
but you don’t really hear it, or you don’t really understand what
to do. It such a big thing to change your eating. And there are
so many voices in your head. And even when you realize that
your way of eating doesn’t line up with your values or your
compassion, you still don’t connect the dots. And then another
friend gets sick. And I was worried he might die. And on that
night it hit me, and what hit me has been confirmed ever since.
We work so hard raising money to help people with cancer
and wishing there was a cure. Well there kind of is.
The estimated new cases of cancer in 2018 is 1.7 million.
(https://seer.cancer.gov/statfacts/html/all.html) More than 4
out of 10 cancer cases among adults in the United States and
almost half of all cancer-related deaths are associated with potentially
modifiable risk factors. Farhad Islami, MD, PhD, strategic
director, cancer surveillance research, American Cancer
Society, Atlanta, Georgia, and colleagues saidin an American
Cancer Society study, “An estimated 42% of all cancer cases
and nearly one-half of all cancer deaths in the United States in
2014 were attributable to evaluated risk factors, many of which
could have been mitigated by effective preventive strategies.”
One of those factors is diet. There is a growing group of physicians,
like Michael Greger, Neal Bernard, Michael Klaper,
Joel Fuhrman, just to name a few, who believe that the dairy,
meat and egg industries have not been honest with us about
the dangers eating these things. And eating a plant based diet
can prevent and even reverse some incidents of chronic disease
including cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Www.Nutrition-
Facts.org is a treasure of medical research showing that diet
may, in many cases, perform better than pharmacology. Don’t
get me started on that... or politics….. or the American monetary
system. In short, the epiphany in the middle of the night was the
voice saying, “Don’t act like you dont know.”
At least going vegan is the good way to know who your
friends are. Anyone who will still tolerate you is a real friend
indeed! And I can cook. And I love wild foods and foraging.
For me, cooking is like painting. I feel like I have hundreds of
new colors to paint with. I really haven’t missed much. When
people tell me they could never live without (fill in the blank), I
tell them, then don’t! It’s not going off the planet. I’m actually
only vegan-ish. If you are slinging caviar, I’ll probably eat it.
My favorite pair of shoes is leather. As is my hand bag. And my
car interior. They are already dead. You can always start with
meatless Monday. It’s hard to change a lifetime of brainwashing,
bad data, and customs. You just start where you are. If
you want to. Or not.
Juli: What is it like being single with all this going on?
Charissa: It’s just like the balance thing. You think you really
want something. But you have to lean in while you are pushing
hard, and breath. Otherwise you might not be aware. You
might miss things. You might not hear your own inner voice.
Life is a thinking-man’s game. And you learn as you go. What
I’ve learned is, it’s ok. I think you need to be kind of brave
to be single, so you don’t live in some kind of limbo….You

constantly hear, “Don’t worry. He’s out there.”, and you unconsciously accept that
somehow you aren’t complete or your life isn’t whole until the perfect person in
the perfect scenario completes you.
But it’s not like that. Things are just the way it’s supposed to be right here, Right
now. I won’t diminish one day while I wish for something else I don’t have.
So many people compromise their lives accepting things they shouldn’t- out
of fear of being alone. If things change tomorrow, that’s tomorrow. Today
is perfect just the way it is.
Juli: You say you have reached the point of ‘No fear’. Tell us how you
have reached that point?
Charissa: After losing loved ones, almost losing everything in the last
couple of recessions, and now watching my hard working friends get close
to retirement and get sick, I have grown accustomed to fear. It doesn’t go
away, it’s like the monster under the bed. It just isn’t as scary. Life is scary.
Bad things happen. Don’t act like you don’t know.
In the eternal words of my favorite scholar, Tim Minchin (Youtube, you’ll
thank me, UWA Graduation Speech, 9 Life’s Lessons)
“I said at the beginning of this ramble that life is meaningless. It was not a
flippant assertion. I think it’s absurd: the idea of seeking “meaning” in the
set of circumstances that happens to exist after 13.8 billion years worth of
unguided events. Leave it to humans to think the universe has a purpose
for them. However, I am no nihilist. I am not even a cynic. I am, actually,
rather romantic. And here’s my idea of romance:
You will soon be dead. Life will sometimes seem long and tough and,
god, it’s tiring. And you will sometimes be happy and sometimes sad.
And then you’ll be old. And then you’ll be dead.
There is only one sensible thing to do with this empty existence, and
that is: fill it. Not fillet. Fill. It. And in my opinion (until I change it), life
is best filled by learning as much as you can about as much as you
can, taking pride in whatever you’re doing, having compassion, sharing
ideas, running(!), being enthusiastic.
And then there’s love, and travel, and wine, and sex, and art, and kids, and
giving, and mountain climbing … but you know all that stuff already.
It’s an incredibly exciting thing, this one, meaningless life of yours. Good luck.
Juli: What advice would you give young women if they decide to go into the construction
business?
Charissa: Everything above. :-)
DYNAMIC DUO:
Karen Sharpe-Kramer
& Katharine “Kat” Kramer
Levvy Carriker, Tony Marchase, Juli Ragsdale,
Katharine Kat Kramer and Karen Sharpe
Golden Globe award-winning actress Karen Sharpe-Kramer
and former Miss Golden Globe actress/activist/producer
Katharine “Kat” Kramer are teaming up for the first time in the
movie TURNOVER; writer/producer/director Linda Palmer’s
latest film project that is set to shoot in August.
I recently attended a fundraiser dinner for the film at the
amazing Cafe Piccolo in Long Beach with my Disney animator
and artist friend David Woodman. We were honored to
be asked to attend by long-time friends Karen and Kat, and
wanted to support this special project.
Karen is my “adopted” Mom, and Kat and her sister Jennifer
(a very gifted concert pianist) are my “adopted” sisters. When
my husband Paul and I got married in 2014, Karen stood in
for my Mom and my great friend, designer Robert Nesbitt
stood in for
my Dad. I lost both my parents in the mid-’90’s, so I was very
blessed to have these two amazing individuals walk me down
the aisle. It’s a memory and a day I will treasure forever!
Karen, Kat and Jennifer are truly a part of Hollywood royalty.
Karen is the widow of acclaimed social issue master filmmaker
Stanley Kramer. In a career that spanned over 4 decades
Stanley received nine (!) Academy Award nominations as
a director and producer; winning the prestigious Irving G.
Thalberg Award in 1961 for JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG.
His other landmark films include GUESS WHO’S COMING
TO DINNER, SHIP OF FOOLS, HIGH NOON, THE DEFI-
ANT ONES, ON THE BEACH and IT’S A MAD, MAD, MAD,
MAD WORLD. Steven Spielberg famously said “Stanley
Kramer was an incredibly talented visionary, and one of our
great filmmakers.
Not just for the art and passion he put on screen, but for the
impact he has made on the conscience of the world.”
A long-time lover and frequent visitor to Palm Springs, Karen
recently did a book signing for New Zealand author Jennifer
Frost’s “Producer of Controversy: Stanley Kramer, Hollywood
Liberalism, and the Cold War” at Just Fabulous. Karen and
Kat had the audience in rapture, as they recounted behindthe-scenes
tales of how Stanley was able to go around and
behind the studio system to put his before-their-time
stories on the big screen.
Karen felt so strongly about the positive messages in Linda
Palmer’s TURNOVER screenplay, that she has come out of
retirement after 25 years to play the featured role of Pat - one
third of a trio of “Ladies who Lunch” at the cafe that’s at the
center of the story. She also saw an opportunity to appear
for the first time in a feature film with Kat, who has one of the
leads in the film, playing the devious and cunning Fran. the
multi-ethnic and handi-capable cast also includes entertainment
legends Bill Macy (TV’s MAUDE) and Lainie Kazan (MY
BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, MY FAVORITE YEAR and the understudy
to Barbra Streisand in FUNNY GIRL on Broadway).
TURNOVER’s top-notch producing team includes the Coachella
Valley’s own Martina Webster, Linda’s frequent producing
partner and radio co-host Rae Davis, Brian McCormick
and Kat Kramer - following in her Dad’s footsteps.
SER ANZOATEGUI BRINGS
THE CORAZON DE VIDA TO
“VIDA”
-- THE NEW STARZ NETWORK HIT SERIES
Written by Dorie Beaverhausen
Television fans are probably not familiar with the name Ser
Anzoategui—a name that is rapidly catapulting into stardom.
Starring in the new critically acclaimed STARZ Network series
“Vida,” Anzoategui has gone from years as a struggling Los
Angeles theater actor to a television series regular on one of the
most anticipated new hit shows of the year.
“Vida” tells the story of an economically challenged Hispanic
community in East Los Angeles, intertwining the rich culture
-- food, music, religion, history, art and politics. Each episode
is layered with the flavor, heart and soul of a proud Hispanic
people. Anzoategui’s character is “Eddy,” a lesbian who loses
her wife in the opening episode. This traumatic occurrence
leaves Eddy to face her wife’s daughters, whom she has never
met, and, to complicate matters, the daughters do not know that
their mother was married to a woman. “Eddy is the heart of
the show,” says Anzoategui,” and she wants to keep going and
keep the family going. There is a beautiful thing that happens
when people are chosen family and I believe Eddy represents
this for a lot of LGBTQUIA people.”
When recently asked what it is like working on a ground breaking
series that tackles themes of Latinx life, and social justices
that affect East Los Angeles, Ser describes it the
following way, “It feels like a dream. I compare
it to the first time I went to Dinah Shore. It was
what everyone was always talking about. It was this
Pilgrimage to Palm Springs. I walked into the pool area
and I did a double take and thought is this a movie or
what, seeing all those people who shared similar ideas
and lifestyles in which I could relate. Like on “Vida”, the
amount of respect that each member of the production
and Executives at Starz have showed me is humbling
beyond words.”
Anzoategui is receiving major accolades from television
critics nationwide. The Hollywood Reporter writes, “…
the early standout performance comes from Anzoategui,
who is another reason Starz should plan on airing a full
hour to start. It’s hard to get an early read on Eddy and
a lot of things I read as wooden from Anzoategui in the
first episode become much more clearly a product of the
character’s sadness.” The New York Times writes, “Mx.
Anzoategui (who is gender nonbinary and and prefers
gender-neutral terms) is especially good as the grieving
Eddy…”
Born in Huntington Park, California and raised in Argentina
during the childhood years, Anzoategui, is a non-binary
gender actor -- one of only a handful of non-binary
actors working on television today. When asked what
non-binary means, Anzoategui is eager to educate and
offers a very simplistic explanation, “It means not fitting
into society’s explanation and expectations of gender expression
and self-identification.” Anzoategui does not go by
“he” or “she,” but prefers to be referred to by the pronouns,
“them,” “they” and “their.”
Before landing the role on “Vida,” Anzoategui had a recurring
role on the award winning series “East Los High” and appeared
on “The Fosters,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Shameless.”
An accomplished playwright, this busy actor is known
for years of relentless advocacy for social justice. “When
I was cast in “Vida,” I had been doing extensive grassroots
work concerning neighborhood displacement awareness,
community access to fresh and organic food, transgender
& LGBTQUIA advocacy, immigration reform activism, arts
activism and work with HIV social services,” says Anzoategui.
“I acknowledge and give tribute to some of my success as
an actor because of this charitable work. Being able to truly
listen to someone else’s pain and story, while checking myself
on my privileges and judgments was and is valuable for me as
an actor,” adds Anzoategui.
Whether volunteering their time towards community issues,
helping the world to understand non-binary gender or working
on their craft as an actor, Ser Anzoategui is certainly a
unique and talented new television star to watch. The person
behind this name will rightfully earn their place at the top of
the Hollywood and LGBTQ+ communities.
DESERT DENTAL
ALTERNATIVES
Bruno Lemay, DMD
acid to decalcify the tooth. It is called dental
plaque and it forms very quick after eating.
The better hygiene a person has, the less
they will have decay. It takes both sugar and
plaque to decay a tooth. The more you brush
and floss, the more plaque removed and the
less risk of decay.
Additionally, elderly patients also tend to have
more decay. It is more obvious with elderly
patients who are loosing their dexterity, and
in general they tend to eat more sweets more
often, and not brush as often.
There is also another component that needs
to be explained here. In the mouth there are
several types of bacteria. Some are responsible
for gum disease and some are responsible
for decay. Some people may have the best
hygiene and still have gum disease and some
who have the worst hygiene may not suffer
from gum disease at all. This is because they
do not have the bacteria responsible for gum
disease. Same thing for decay. Some people
will be more susceptible to decay then others
even if they eat just a little sugar and have
decent dental hygiene. That is because they
have that kind of bacteria in their mouth in a
higher rate then another person. But that is
not a reasonable excuse. More brushing
and plaque control with a topical fluoride
application daily, preferably with a special
personal tray made at the dental office will
help.
Very rarely a person will suffer from gum
disease and a high rate of decay. It is
generally one or the other. If someone has
a high rate of decay, in general they will
not suffer from gum disease like bone loss,
periodontal pockets and tooth mobility.
It is a proven fact though, that the better
the dental hygiene you have and the better
your diet is in terms of limiting sugar intake,
the healthier your gums and teeth will be.
So, it is not true that decay affect only
kids. As long as you have one tooth in your
mouth you are subject to get decay if you
leave dental plaque on it and eat sugar!
The best way to prevent that is to have
good dental hygiene at home and brushing
after any sugar intake, and to visit your
dentist 2 to 3 times a year.
Dr. Bruno Lemay
Do you think that dental cavities are
problems only for children?
It is a general belief that cavities are for kids
only. But in fact, cavities affect all ages!
The reason why cavities are more prevalent
in children is mainly the fact that they tend
to eat more sugar and have poor hygiene
habits. However, when looking at the cause
of decay, which is basically plaque with the
presence of sugar, it is easy to understand
that cavities can happen at any age even if
your mouth is full of crowns.
Of course there are some people who have
teeth that are softer then others and are
easier to decay but that affects only 1% of
the population. Basically any diet rich in
sugar will increase your chance of decay.
Soft drinks, candies and anything sweet
will have a potency to create decay in the
presence of dental plaque. Of course in
order to create decay there has to be the
bacteria that will transfer the sugar into
awe of this magnificent animal. Blue is now a slave to
showtime and this gets the scientist in Owen, emotional
and angry. He goes on the rescue to set Blue free and to
enlist Blue to get revenge. But soon the scientists and
the public realize that they can not put the genie back in
the bottle. The genetic power of the dinosaur has now
been released!
Problem is that there are other dinosaurs not quite as
cute as Blue. And not as friendly either. I mean downright
rude.
by Levvy Carriker and Juli Ragsdale
LIVE Magazine
It’s been four years since theme park and luxury resort
Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment.
Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while
the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles.
When the island’s dormant volcano begins roaring to
life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard)
mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs
from this extinction-level event. Owen is driven to find
Blue, his lead raptor who’s still missing in the wild, and
Claire has grown a respect for these creatures she now
makes her mission. Arriving at the unstable island as lava
begins raining down, their expedition uncovers a conspiracy
that could return our entire planet to a perilous
order not seen since prehistoric times. They try to capture
‘Blue’ one of the last surviving species of the 11 dinosaurs
discovered...alive!
The scientists are determined.
The team enlisted Claire, who they knew who could be
the only person to get Owen.
Imagine Craig’s List rants and raves meets Facebook. You
get the picture.
The epic fight begins. And Owen and Claire get all googly
at each other. Enter the romance part. You know those
close-ups saying, “You know I am doing this for you”, or
something like that.
These creatures were here before us and if we are not
careful they will be here after us. The main scientist at
Jurassic World welcomes the warriors to the fight.
This movie is so fun and not nearly as scary as Walmart,
so take your kids and let them trash the aisles. You know
the rest. The dinosaurs are so realistic and the connection
between Blue and Owen is so intuitive, almost
animal like. No words are needed. The animated
expressions that crosses species is brilliant.
Does Owen save the day? It plays out awesomely, and
Chris Pratt does an amazing job at his role.
The action-packed movie is actually lighthearted and
gives a great message that if you have a will you can
accomplish anything. Even against all odds. Even a live
dinosaur. Owen’s good looks help a bit too! You just
want to Photoshop him right out of the film and nestle
him in your hip pocket for ‘a good time later’.
Spielberg always satisfies. We strongly recommend this
film to all ages.
But what on this earth could possibly go wrong? When
Owen gets his chance to face ole Blue, they are intense
with one another. They stand eye to eye as Blue starts
to accept Owen. But then all of a sudden a dart whistles
through and stabs Blue on the neck. It is a tranquilizer
gun!
Soldiers appear out of the bush and are armed. As they
surround Owen and Blue, Owen admonishes the soldiers,
“Back your men up right now!”
The fight ensues and Blue is finally tranquilized. Then
Owen realizes that he has been tricked. Blue will be sold
to the highest bidder and be caged for the rest of his
life in a circus manner. Like all animals before Blue, he
is paraded before laughing humans...entertained, yet in
